View Full Version : Driven a Legacy Lately?

I had to leave my car overnight witht the dealer because my fan switch needed replaced. They gave me a loner, a 2001 Legacy LS. Its a pretty nice car, but one heck of a change coming from the WRX. Its an AT with no pick up at all. It has some cool features, rides and handles very well. It really handles much nicer than you would expect from a wagon, almost sporty. I just wanted to say that to anyone unhappy with the WRXs visors could probably do a direct switch with the Legacy as the Legacy has cloth visors that look about the same size and shape (excluding the little flip down rearview sunvisor thingy). I am at least going to look into the price of these. Anyway, I will be picking up the WRX this afternoon. I miss her already.....sigh....

yeah ...the legacy aches for the h6 engine, or the turbo 4...

Subaru is really missing out on something that could really impact the accord v6/camry v6's market...

This past sunday, i went to pepboys to buy some stuff to clean my WRX, and there was this guy in a 3 series beemer who asked me about the power and stuff..he seemed to like the car, and thought that 227hp was awesome..he told me he test drove cars for his company, so he chose the cars that went into their fleets, and he was in love with the legacy...but was really dissapointed with the engine...

I really think that with the H6, or a turbo 4, they can really make a dent in the midsize market...

My 1993 Turbo feel pretty damn fast, even though it rated at 160hp, vs. 165hp for the new Legacies. I have a feeling that my horsepower was underrated, cuz this things hauls, even with the AT. They should have carried over the 22B and just refined it along the way rather than going to the 2.5 liter.

Drive a GT 5-speed, and you'll be feeling the love, baby! I have a GT wagon ('98) that I just love. They were begging me to take it off the lot, since "nobody wants a 5-speed," and I was happy to do so. It takes one hell of a car to get a hole shot on me, though with the Stromung, fewer give it a shot now. It's funny. Sometimes, I can quell their urges with just a blip of the throttle and an admonitory glance to the right.

Legacy GTs rock!

Legacy sucks. Built in US means quality is crap. My '98 Legacy OB has had three recalls in first three years:

(1) Master brake cylinder replaced
(2) Transmission linkage replaced
(3) Front axle grease leak

And add to that of numerous warranty repairs including two A/C repairs in two years.

"Built in US means quality is crap"

I've seen comments similar to this before. However, every study I've seen seems to indicate that the quality is the same regardless of where the cars are built. Failures are usually the results of bad parts or poor engineering.

samirr what u feel is not the hp (160hp) it's the torque that the turbo has (181lb-ft) compared to the 166lb-ft for the 2.5l legacy l.

I doubt the poor engineering after all my Impeza OBS is almost flawless. Bad parts, sure (these parts are also made in US). And bad QA. The Isuzu-Subaru plant in Inidana isn't top of the line in quality.

Boy, my '98 GT has been great. The only unscheduled repair was to fix the hesitation. I've driven the piss out of this car for almost every one of its now 42K miles, including 4K launches, light off roading, snow play and triple-digit speeds.

It still has the original clutch and all that jazz, and runs like a top. What's funny is that people who drive it, say that it feels better than most Legacies they feel. Must be a Wednesday car. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

If you want to say "my Legacy sucks," that's cool. I always like to see iClubbers stay clear of sweeping generalizations like saying "Legacies suck," because of car-specific issues. I admit to being Pollyanna, though.

On the other hand, I was given an Outback as a service loaner for a day, and didn't dig it.

You're mixing the fun factor with quality. Did you ever got recalls I listed above(applies to most 97 and 98 Legacies)?

The Legacy GT with the 5 speed is a great car. It can cruise at 160 km/h (100 mph) all day without breaking a sweat. It is a wonderful stiff car, with the 5spd you don't really miss the extra hp. I have driven on a recent 800 km in one day road trip. It was sweet! If you put some nice 17" with sticky rubber it is even a bit more fun!

I remember rumors of a mid-200hp turbo Legacy coming to the States several years ago, but unfortunately it never made the trip. After that "not for US sale" letdown I'm just glad we finally got our WRX. Maybe Subaru has finally gotten the message and will send us some Blitzens or something.

Turbo torque = serious fun factor, at least my butt-dyno tells me I have more power. I think I'm still faster than a 2.5 GT, those run 0-60 in like 9 seconds right? If we get a B$ in the states i'll make that my second car, right next to my WRX in the garage.

Hi All,

Don't be to hard on Legacy GT owners, the Legacy GT is really a nice car with good all around manners. I's almost like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Great to take clients around in and also a whoooooooole lots of fun during the weekend autocross.

Ask Gambit how well this car performs. He's had was in the passenger seat on more than 1 occasion during AutoX's.

ADR Ikon 17" + BFG G-Force KD
Brullen 2.5" Cat back exhaust
UR Pulley
Whiteline 20 - 24 mm adjustable rear sway bar
Soon, Cobb Cams.

Yes I agree, this car does need another 30 horses to make it ideal. (working on it)

But stock, the 5 spd isn't that much of a slouch in the real world...

Hey Joe,
looks like that big bird is sitting on your spoiler. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
I attest to the truth everyone. Joe's been skinning us Impreza folks along with the other so called sporty cars with that legacy GT of his at our local autoX events. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif
So the GT can handle. Now if I can only get some good rubber to mount some kinda pathetic challenge attempt. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, Legacys are horrible. My dad's 91 turbo has only made it to 375 thousand miles, and he's had to replace the clutch once or twice and...well that's about it, but the car really sucks...

Aren't you mounting some Kumho 700 Victory Racers on your car...

Corvette club first events are listed already @

Sorry, and I might start a war with this, but the generalization "All cars made in America car crap" is a pretty bold statement. Let's see here...ALL Accord's are made here (are they crap?), 3 series BMW's, and the Toyota Camry. Cars like the Impala aren't even made in America. AMERICAN (Ford, Chevy) company cars do tend to follow this trend, but come on, are you saying two of the most reliable cars in America are crap? I think it's just better techniques used by those two Japanese companies.

The MY00+ Reliability in the Legacy's have been Phenomenal. Our MY00 Legacy GT Limited Sedan has had ZILCH in terms of problems... (Well, the weather striping in the door got knocked loose cause of my dad trying to squeeze in the car at some point http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif)

As for the power, I can honestly say that the 0-60 sucks, but after that, its a VERY good performer! 55-80 this car is quick, and you hit 90 before you can breath! And you cant even tell you are going 90! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif (Yes, the WRX is much faster and the same "wow im going that fast" feeling, I test drove it too http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif)

My cars been in the shop the past week, so heres the legacy in all its glory ive been driving lately: http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

WRX's may be faster, but they dont get mistook for BMW's like our car does http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

MY 1999 Legacy SUS is a great car. 30,000 miles and no problems. Power is fine for every day driving. Love the car but I also love my new WRX.
The SUS's did have the brake recall but it saved me from paying for the brake fluid flush because they needed to flush the system to do the fix.

Legacy is a great car.

Just to make a note- I never said that the Legacy wasnt a great car. I thought it was really nice. But it was and auto, it was the wagon model (heavier) and I think it was the S or SL model, whatever one gives you the base motor. I love the stylin of the car, especially the sedan. I was just pointing out that driving to the dealership in a WRX and leaving in a Legacy S(L), auto was one heck of a difference. Both my girlfriend and I drove the car around a little and we were both impressed by the brakes and overall handling of this car. The engine was a little to be desired. It also had some really cool nooks and crannies to store stuff. And it had better sun visors, dammithttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif.......

Don't get me wrong. All Subarus last forever. It sure beats all other US car companies except Toyota and Honda. I'm only comparing US made Legacy to Japan made Impreza in relative term and from my own experience of owning one of each.

If you check Edmunds.com used car info, you'll see the reliabilty rating for '98 Imprezas are 9.0 while '98 Legacies are only 7.8. '97 model year is even worse (9.1 vs 7.2).

Joe,
I still have yet to decide. Most likely Proxes RA1s as they are good beginners R compounds. I am now wondering if it's worth it to keep changing tires when i am only going to participate for fun and not for the regionals. <sigh> and the fact that I am going back to MYS for the summer means that a lot of time will not be spent at the autoX! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif Don't know. Maybe I shall skip this year and not use my car. Instead, take the miata out. hehehehehe..... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif
