'97 Legacy Outback / door speaker upgrade:

I'm looking at the Haynes manual but I'm still not sure if the front door panel comes off in one piece or two. The panel seems to be made in two pieces but does the lower part (where the speaker lives) come off by itself or does the whole panel come off to get at the speaker?

I am replacing the OE radio/cassette unit with a newer Subaru OE radio/cassette/CD unit & want to add better speakers as part of the project.

I expect lots of you have done this; any experience / advice welcome. Also replacement speaker choice comments. Thx.

Door comes off all in one piece.
Most 6.5's will fit in the cutouts, but many will be too deep, and you may need to fabricate spacers to keep them form hitting the windows inside the doors.
