View Full Version : final drive ratio on 93 AWD
so i was under the impression that the 93L awd was a 3.90 just like every other 5mt (except the RS)
so i aquired a 3.90 lsd ..
buuuut now that i have it installed it is making clunking noises
i double checked and the fsm says that i have a 4.11 :( so far i have only driven ~15 miles since the swap
any thoughts
stimpy 07-21-2003, 02:25 PM Well I could look at my FSMs for '93, but if it says 4.11 in yours then it probably says the same in mine.
You put 15 miles on the new diff or 15 miles on everything?
Awe, now that sucks. the FWD '93 has the 3.90 final drive while the AWD has 4.111. What's even weirder is that my '96 has a 3.90 ;) My tranny will be up for grabs in about 3 weeks :p
Whoah! In 1995 the FWD went to a 3.70?? final drive. This was also the first year that the AWD got the 3.90 final drive.

Legacy777 07-21-2003, 04:02 PM On the legacies, all the FWD's were 3.70.
When I look at doing my swap I'll be looking at 3.90 ratio. I think it's probably the best all around ratio for cruising and acceleration. JMO
15 miles on the diff .. i took it back out nd botched a rear wheel berring in the process :(

3.7 final drive? That seems pretty low.

most third generation camaro z28's came from the factory
with 2.73's, even 2.23's 3.73 is considered high and pro street
performance.
4.10's are heard of, but considered insanely high.
3.7? low? naah :P
stimpy 07-23-2003, 02:35 AM I pulled 3.70 directly from the FSM. It's not like I just made it up.

scobaru 07-23-2003, 05:29 AM this is kinda of a on and off topic maybe should be posted on converison forms but here I go
does anyone know what the final drive ratio on my 94 awd trans is ? 4.11? is there a place or a site or maybe we should make one of what tranny's have what final drive ratio so we can all mix and match diff's and tranny's. I'm planning to get a sti motor and trans but I wanna keep my diff because less money spent means less i'm in debt.

One warning for ya Jon, the FSM's are notorious for being incorrect. I've got sets for 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994. There's so many discrepencies in there, and even between the different years that I would definitely double check everything.
3.70 gears were normally used with the FWD models. I'm not saying that they weren't ever used in the AWD models, but it seems like one of those odd things in the manual that I'd double check.
stimpy 07-23-2003, 11:58 AM 3.7 wasnt used on the AWD version, it was just the FWD for that year.

Legacy777 07-23-2003, 02:56 PM ok my bad, I misread what you said.

Would you happen to know the gear ratios for a 1995 FWD Impreza?

It's most likely 3.7 like all the other subaru FWD trannies
Do you have an auto or MT?
ciper 07-23-2003, 11:01 PM I have a 3.7 rear LSD in my garage right now, its bolted to my 89 xt6!
Easy check. Lift the wheels and stick the car in neutral. Mark one front wheel and block the other wheel from turning. Have someone watch it. Mark the driveshaft. Turn the driveshaft until the person outside has counted 20 turns.
If you turned the driveshaft 37 times its 3.7, if you turn it 39 times it 3.9, and if you turned it 41 times its 4.11!
Maybe a dumb question,,, what does the tag on the original differential say?
Legacy777 07-23-2003, 11:46 PM the front's don't really have tags......or so I haven't seen?
Not sure if ciper's method will work since you don't really have a drive shaft on a FWD tranny, you just have the axles.
John*G 07-24-2003, 02:50 PM I thought the 93 AWD, 5MT was 3.9 and the 4EAT was 4.111. I havn't actually checked yet.
ciper 07-24-2003, 03:03 PM Legacy777: "ratio on 93 AWD" :p
So he does have a driveshaft, and the original should have had a tag.

I was replying to this one "Would you happen to know the gear ratios for a 1995 FWD Impreza?"

Not the final drive, I meant gear ratios for 1st through 5th gear. Or are all the gears the same for different years and AWD/FWD ,with only the final drive being different? I have some gear ratios for an older L but I'm not sure if they apply to my car.
I have an MT by the way.
stimpy 07-24-2003, 10:38 PM Unfortunately, I just opened the document online, I didn't save it. As such, I don't have the '95 gear ratios. I have MY96 and MY93 though.

Most if not all the documentation I've seen on the first gen legacy gearing has been the same for the MT's, and just the final drive ratio has changed. I'd have to double check to make 100% sure, but that will have to wait until after I move and get the manuals unpacked.
