View Full Version : Things I would like to know about Gimmie Gears. Charlene...
ebeck 07-20-2003, 03:37 PM The new Legacy 5mt seems like a real strong contender. If the price is right, could eliminate the need for aftermarket gears. Or if the 6MT becomes reasonable. That would work too. So, for those of us who want/need gears now, $3600 is alot to spend/gamble. There is no shortage of failures with Challak, BMP and others to be sure. I do not know why they failed. Do not care. I assume the problem, if it was the gearsets, has been corrected. All fine products I am sure. I however am enamoured with the Gimmies. If I plunk money down for MRT, I will be satisfied with thier strengh and durability. No questions asked. I would like to say the same about Gimmies but do not have enough information. Here is a few facts that I need to be comfortrable with seperating with $3600. God that is alot. They better be freaking kryptonite. I understand. Proper, strong helical gears are expensive and difficult to make. Exchange rate too. I know. That is why we have what we have.
1. How long have you been making/selling gears?
2. Is there any warranty period?
3. How many have you sold?
4. How many have been returned or have been broken?
5. Do you have an expected failure rate?
6. Made in AU. Is it Gimmie specific material and machining that is used or the same as MRT or other gearsets made in AU? Is it a known formula or somethng new?
7. Is there anything besides the helical nature that makes it a better choice than say KAAZ, MRT and company?
8. Tough question, How much stronger do you anticipate yours to be over OEM.
9. Is it albinsgear who makes them?
10. Why are yours so good?
I should point out that I am not disputing any of Gimmies properties or quality. I am not looking for a guarantee against failure. I just am not comfortable plunking cash down to find out that "Oh, it is the same as stock just larger" or something. I know that it is not the case, It is just an example. I really want to have faith that my $3600 will not turn into $7200 2 years later. When exchange retes are good, many may gamble on $1500. But $3600? I at least, need to be REAL comfortrable.
I am at the point that if I can not be satisfied that there is a solution to be had, selling the 3 month old car at a loss and selling my aftermarket parts at a loss is a cheaper option than replacing the GB and having it fail again. This really sucks. Last Subaru product I buy. Well OK. I'd buy an STi if they stopped pinging.;)
Understand, that if I spoke with Gimmie directly, I would just turn aroung and post "They said..." It would be nice to hear from the source directly. Cleaner, less confusion, no mis-interpretation of what was stated. We have all seen that.
shaq8u 07-21-2003, 05:33 AM no offence mate, but it would be pretty stupid for any company to give you a guarantee against failure...when your working with high performance vehichles, things are bound to fail, providing your gearset is installed right, and you follow the manufacturers instructions, you should have no problems.
ebeck 07-21-2003, 11:58 AM Yeah, thanks. ARGH! As I said "I am not looking for a guarantee against failure." I thought that was clear. Let me try this.
*****I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A GUARANTEE. ALL GEARS CAN BE BROKEN. HIGH PERFORMANCE PARTS, HIGH STRESS. ALL GEARS CAN BE BROKEN. I KNOW*****
It would be more stupid for me to plunk down $3600 with out asking a few questions. I am sure they are the best gears you can buy. Asking questions is prudent. Not asking is pretty stupid. I have got a great motor for you. The best. $8000. No questions just send cash. Thanks for the input though. I fear you just missed the point. Charlene will be responsing shortly.
Edit: Are you calling MRT stupid? (http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/barking_box.htm) ;)
Newbie Subie 07-21-2003, 08:38 PM The MRT gear set is made by the same people that make the Gimmiegears set.
My next set of gears will be there sport/street setup.

geared4rally 07-21-2003, 11:59 PM 1. How long have you been making/selling gears?
We introduced our particular gear sets to the U.S. Market approximately 1 1/2 years ago. However, our gear cutter has been manufacturing gear sets for more than 30 years. They manufacture gears for Possum Bourne Motorsports, MRT and the STI 6Spd as well as for Porsches.
2. Is ther any warranty period?
We only warranty our gear sets against manufacturer's defects.
3. How many have you sold?
We have sold approximately 30 gear sets in the U.S. market.
4. How many have been returned or have been broken?
We have had no returns or broken gear sets to date.
5. Do you have an expected failure rate?
We do not anticipate any failure due to manufacturing or quality. However, we anticipate that some gear sets may be damaged due to driver error.
6. Made in Au. Is it Gimmie specific material and machining that is used or the same as MRT or other gear sets made in AU? Is it a known formula or something new?
Though our manufacturer also cuts gears for other distributors, we have not had the luxury or opportunity of purchasing or performing a side by side analysis of the material and machining of other gear sets available on the market. We are aware of the quality that we require of our gear cutter but are unaware of what other distributors may deem acceptable to their profit margin. One could assume that 30 years experience would provide that the manufacturing process for Gimmie Gears is a known formula and not something new.
7. Is there anything besides the helical nature that makes it a better choice than say KAAZ, MRT and company?
Again:
"Though our manufacturer also cuts gears for other distributors, we have not had the luxury or opportunity of purchasing or performing a side by side analysis of the material and machining of other gear sets available on the market. "
It would be foolish of us after the above response to question # 6 to "declare" that we have a better gear set than any other retailer.
"We are aware of the quality that we require of our gear cutter but are unaware of what other distributors may deem acceptable to their profit margin."
8. Tough question, how much stronger do you anticipate yours to be over OEM?
To be honest, I imagine it takes a lot of engineering and testing to reply with a percentage type of response here. I am not privvy to that information. I will, however, inquire of our manufacter whether there has been any such testing performed and respond one way or another.
I would like to emphasize that experience counts for a whole lot when it comes to quality and I feel confident that our manufacturer would not have survived for 30+ years if he produced an inferior product.
9. Why are yours so good?
Please see our website at gimmiegears.com Hover over the links on the "Gears" page and you can find my response to this question.
I hope that I have answered your questions to your satisfaction. If anyone should have any further questions or inquiries please do not hesitate to post them, PM , e-mail or phone me.

Charlene Roueche

I'm no business person, but I'm surprised that any company would not analyze it's competition. I would hope that before releasing its product, any company would check similar products on the market to see how they stacked up with respect to quality, performance, price and overall value. I think this is especially true for a product that is intended to improve upon and replace something your customers already have.
I would also like to see some data comparing the strength of your gearset to OEM. It is nice to see what you have on your website as far as alloy, and hardness, but it would be better to have something to compare it to.
I'm not trying to say you make an inferior product, I'm just saying that I people prefer hard facts when making decisions.
I do understand though that with only selling 30 gearsets at this time, doing side-by-side comparisons of your competition would significantly eat into your profit margin, so perhaps this is something that will be done in the (near) future.
I always appreciate it when manufacturers take the time to answer questions posted on this board.
ebeck 07-22-2003, 01:04 AM Thanks Charlene. Fair enough. By the way, it is albinsgear?;)

MRT are a great gearset, but sometimes i wonder if anyone with alot of serious horsepower, has ever tried to break them, i mean does anyone with serious horsepower even run this set ?
Just off the top of my head, i remember rigolis ran 10.02 sec, a long while back, with a dogbox (TRP i think ), and not too long back DBRONX ran 10.01 sec on another dogbox, and ESX ran something like that, on a TRP dogbox again, what was the dogset DBRONX was running ? MRT ? as for synchro sets ive seen the PAR set and 1st gear is huge, i know alot of members on here have this set.
I would like to know MRT rates their gearset as unbreakable, but whats the most powerful WRX that has this gearset in it, if i was going to plonk down the cash for MRT, id just put abit on top and buy a hollinger.
Recce01 07-22-2003, 09:25 PM Gimmie Gears are the best thing to ever happen to my WRX, Just buy them and enjoy the drive.....all this technical mumbo jumbo cracks me up........in the time it took you to type all those questions, you could have mowed enough lawns to buy the gearset twice. OK, I'm sorry, I just get tired of individuals tearing apart good people and good companies.....only to try to bypass them in the end.......If you are that into it...perhaps you should start your own company. I know the people at Gimmie Gears very well and have to say they were a pleasure to work with. THEY DID A TREMENDOUS AMOUINT OF RESEARCH ON WHERE TO GET THEIR GEARS.......Thanks to them my rally car is running better than ever!!! If you do end up buying them, you will not be dissapointed, If you dont.....well....good luck anyways!!!
Zornorph 07-28-2003, 12:41 AM well how about some feedback from those who have them?
