Unfortunately I cannot find a way to get my car up to Flatirons for clutch shudder so I have to take it to John Elway West since that is so much closer.:( Should I worry about my intake since it is my only mod or should I just leave it on? My ONLY other mods are to audio.

I haven't heard anything about how mod friendly they are over there. The last couple of times I have been there for service I have been quite impressed with everything

We were taking my wife's Forrester there for most of its maintenance, and they seem to be really fair. We had an issue with the tires balding due to alignment after like 6 months, and they were able to get them replaced from Subaru. Sorry I know this does not help you with how they view mods, but it has been my experience.

BS

I took my car there once for a warranty related issue. They didn't fix the problem, and to add insult to injury they tried to tell me that my TurboXS downpipe "..just voided your entire warranty.." (this was before my car was heavily modified).

YMMV. Personally I steer clear except for parts purchases.

Someone posted positive experience with the shudder repair at Burt in Littleton. They might be closer to you. I think I recall positive stuff about mods also. Try searching on Burt and clutch.

I actually had them replace my clutch when there was only 300 miles on the car because something wasn't right. I didn't have the intake on then either though. I think I will just leave the intake on and if they give me a hard time then I will just have to find a way to get my car up to Flatirons:D

I have been happy with their service so far so we will see if that continues or not:disco:

I just noticed that you have an RS. I guess the clutch shudder is problematic across all '02 Imprezas?

Bret said in one of his threads that it did apply to all 02's and both people I talked to at Elway said that there was an updated clutch assembly for my car.

Only time will tell

Just to update this....they treated me real well...when I dropped my car off the service guy noticed the intake and said that he would not look at the air filter (assuming I had a nicer one in there) as part of their general lookover when you take the car in.

Could not have been better about it. Also they found the shudder and gave me the updated clutch and flywheel assembly and it feels great now compared to what it did before.

Also curious how much the new flywheel weighs compared to the old one and how much this has taken away form the performance.

Brett also replaced the rear end. Service advisor said this is typical for the clutch shudder fix. Not sure what the rear end has to do with it and what the difference is, but the shudder seemed to be worse from the rear than the front.

I didn't replace your rear end-not sure who told you that.

Oh, sorry. The service rep misspoke and I can't interpret service sheets tech jargon. I feel better now that the rear end didn't have anything to do with it.

Cool! Had me worried for a sec. Let me know if there's anything else i can help with.

As far as I know the flywheel is the same weight if not lighter since in the service bulletin it says:

"If the OE flywheel has more then 30,000 miles on it, and is in good condition. it can be reused. After 30,000 miles of driving, the surface finish is equivalent to the replacement flywheel."

I have the bulitin if you want a copy. I needed it to prove to the tec that there WAS a bulletin. When I pulled this baby out he started backpedling like crazy, "Oh, well, we've only done this service for Legacies." Blah blah blah.
I had my clutch replaced for clutch shudder a Delenbagh Subaru in Fort Collins. They're pretty good (most of the time) John Elway East (I think), the on on Arapahoe E. of I-25, well they suck! I bought the car from them but will no longer go back for service as it was one hassle or another with them every time and I always felt as though they were very condicending. Flat Irons is ofcourse the place to have work done. You can get there on on your clutch if it is only shudder. Hope that helps.:D

Thats a good point about the flywheel. I guess I didn't read it all that closely. I wonder if is does actually mean it is lighter or if the wording is a little weird.

Yeah I would have rather taken it to Flatirons since they have been so good so many other subie owners but I couldn't find a way to get back after I dropped the car off and then go pick it up again. Oh well at least it all worked out.

Yeah, I probably could have waited another 2 years when I was closer to 30k and the flywheel more worn since the shudder wasn't that bad, but I happened to have the time off now to take a few hours 2 days driving up and back during the week. I took the 24 hour GM test drive to get home and back. It's just too bad GM doesn't have a fun RWD drive car available anywhere near as fast as the WRX.

Also just happened to think that the cause of the shudder as noted on the repair list sheet was "warped flywheel" Maybe someone could clarify what they mean with the 30000 miles and not replacing the flywheel deal.

My understanding of it was that the surface of the flywheel was of a materiel that had different coeffcients of friction at different temps. When the clutch is cold the surface grips too much and the spring attached to the presure plate is to weak to fully clamp it, so it catches and slips repeatedly. Apparently that surface is worn off after 30,000 miles and a replacement of all parts concered including a better surfaced flywheel is the fix for under 30,000 miles. Now I don't know this for fact as nobody really knows what the problem was, but that is the explanation told to me by Subaru tecs and it "seems" palusable enough. I guess:confused:

sounds possible enough to me if it is true.

We need to get subetek to comment on this:D
