In the DC area I've only seen one used one under $15 grand.

They are few and far between, and to make it worse they don't depreciate much at all.

Buy new - Fitzgerald has Ls starting at $18k. I've seen used ones selling for more than that!

I have seen quite a few 98's with decent mileage going for $15k ish locally. I am hoping to pick another one up next year for around $10k for a new project car.

I definitely want to pickup a forester next year as my second car so soon fiancé (sorry if I got the accent wrong) has a car, though she really doesn't want it so it will turn into my daily as soon as she gets a car she wants when she graduates. This frees up the RS become a rally car for fun... Though the Forester will get all the goodies also...

Though I am targeting a '00 Forester as that is the body style and engine combo I like the best... I will be looking for an L also... I have been doing initial pricing but they are high here in Portland... the cheapest I the '98s are 14k...

so I am not sure what I am going to do... I am hoping prices will drop to about that when I am ready to buy...

But I will keep reading this forum as I am already planning all my future projects for both the RS and then the Forester.

I've been considering one as a winter vehicle so I've been investigating the pricing a bit. So far I've found a 98 L with 108k on it for just under $11k.

Anyone else seen Foresters going for so low?

About the only used ones are on dealer lots -selling for book!

There are pros and cons to the S and the L models.

The S has painted cladding, so if you rally it, be ready for scratches. The L's cladding is far more resistant than the thin paint.

But the S has better rims, tires, and the rear disc brakes.

If you rally the RS instead, it shouldn't matter that much.

I recently saw several '98-99 Ls and Ss on the lot at the dealership where I bought mine. The salesman told me they were coming off lease.

Thin paint - no kidding! The front of my S is starting to look like it's been sandblasted. Actually the slate painted lower cladding is holding up better than the black upper body. The combination of some municipalities' sanding their roads rather than salting and the general volume of traffic in the NE Corridor has made it so. Maryland seems to be a particular offender - I've had a stone chip to my windshield and the bulk of my paint chips happen while driving there. Juice, can you confirm?

I'm getting some of that clear film that 3M makes, touching up the chips, and putting the film on the front edge of the hood. Maybe I'll do the headlights and fog lamps while I'm at it. Should make for a nice weekend project around the honeydo's.

I hear you on the paint chipping. The front of my S is covered with tiny little chips from rocks. It does seem like the leading edge of the hood and the grille area gets it the worst. I've also had to replace my windshield once already.
