What year(s) did the forester have the phase I block vs the phase II block? Has the compression ratio changed at all over the years of production?
Thanks,
Aaron

The Forester switched from Phase I to Phase II the same time the RS did -- in MY99.
Based on what I've read, some of the late MY98 owners may have had Phase II shortblocks used in their engines.
No clue on the compression ratios, however.

Phase I DOHC was 1998 only. 1999 and on have Phase II SOHC engines.
I think compression is 9.7 or 10 to 1, right around there. It did not change. Neither did bore or stroke.
Besides the camshaft, the other significant change I remember was the redline, which was 6500 on the DOHC, and lowered to 6250 for the Phase II SOHC.
In reality, they have more in common than not.

So did the MY99 2.5 in the Forester have the MAF sensor like the RS? Did the Forester switch to the MAP in 2000 like the RS?
Thanks all,
Aaron

Aaron: I think the intake may have changed for 1999 and again for 2000.
I am pretty sure that the Forester was the same as the Impreza - both are made in Japan so changes happened at about the same time.
The Outback, on the other hand, didn't get the Phase II until 2000.

Yup, the Forester and RS got the same engine/intake changes at the same time:
98 Phase I (DOHC) w/thin wire MAF
99 Phase II (SOHC) w/thin film MAF
00+ Phase II (SOHC) w/MAP

Thanks all! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
I am considering getting another Forester to make a project car and get rid of the Impreza, but I wanted to know what years to look at.
Did the '99s have the same bad MAF problems as the RS?
My RS turbo kit should bolt right up to the Forester... :evil grin: I think a 13 second Forester would be much more interesting to drive than a 13 second RS http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

I would imagine the 99 Foresters would have the same MAF problems since it's all the same parts anyway. The reason you probably don't hear about Forester MAF problems is because the majority of owners don't do mods.
Cool! A turboed Forester. Perhaps you can be the first in the US to have one.
