Does anyone have any thoughts on a cargo carrier. This years anual trip to the Outer Banks, NC wiil include the new addition to the family. So it will be my wife, new born son and the two dogs. I'll need a little more space for all of thos diapers. The Forester roof cargo carrier looks a little on the small side. ???

I think Juice's homepage shows the roof carrier he uses. If I am not mistaken, it is a soft-sided Samsonite one. I remember seeing one like it at Target that was pretty cool, in that it was two heavy-duty large duffel bags that fit on the roof, and then a cover strapped it down. Must make it real convenient to load / unload...

Yakima makes a system that goes in place of your factory crossbars or you can still use it if you want to carry a luggage rack or box. The Yakima Crosstop is made specially for Foresters and works rather well. I'd recommend stopping into your local bike shop or REI store and specing out a system.

The Samsonite is probably good if you only need to use a cargo carrier every now and then. A Yakima carrier would be more aerodynamic as well as secure due to it's hard plastic shell construction.

If you have any questions regarding a Yakima system you can give me a buzz at work, I work in a bike shop that carries Yakima and I have a system on my '01 Forester...Doublecross towers with 48" bars, bike mounts, ski attachments, cargo basket as well as the luggage box. This might be a little late, but Thule also make roof top cargo carriers that fit foresters. I have a thule hardshell carrier on my 98L, install as is, no additional parts needed. gives me an extra 14(?)cubic feet of space when I go camping. I absolutly love it. Thule also make all the other stuff like bike carrier, cargo bin, fairings, etc.

I have photos at PhotoPoint now, but none with the Samsonite Carrier on it.

It's a soft carrier made of nylon, with a zipper going 3/4 the way around, a felt bottom that does not scratch the paint, and 8 straps to hold it down.

I was water proof the first time I used it, but in a real heavy down pour, where it was left soaking in water, some things inside did get wet.

For that reason you may prefer a hard carrier. I hear Sears has these new black ones that are huge and not that expensive.
