I was wondering if anyone has installed the side underguard bars on their Forester? Are they hard for a DIY'er to install? What tools are needed? Are they a worthwhile addition for easing access to the roof/rack (like when I secure my tandem kayak)? How about winter slush and muck protection on the side of the Forester?

I don't know how they install, but I do know every time you get out of that Forester you'll get your pants dirty. I had running boards on a 4runner. I learned to hate them. Find a Forester with side bars on & check them out before installing your own.

I agree with the dirty pants comment. Not for me.

I usually just stand on the tires or the rear bumper. In fact, the roof is low enough that often I don't even need to.

You can also open the doors if you need a little boost.

My buddy has the undergaurd bars on his 00 Forester S and they get in the way every single time you try and step out of the vehicle. It gets annyoing when it's been raining outside or the vehicle's dirty.

I think the bars are overkill for the Forester. I'm 5'8" and I can reach my bikes, skiis and 'boards on my 98 Forester without too many problems. In a pinch, I just step up on the rear tire or open the rear door and step up into the cabin.

Also, I personally think the side undergaurd bars completely undo the ground effects of the Forester. You loose that 'tapering' towards the middle of the vehicle with the bars.

If you do want to install them, I believe they are held in place by only two bolts each. I think you need to do some drilling, however.

The bars will do nothing for looks. As far as protection, it will make it worse if you are going to be doing a moderate ammount of off roading. This is because the bars will lower the clearence and you'll end up hitting crap with the bars. I would spend that money on a front grill guard that Manik has or a rear differential protector.
