Hi,
I took delivery of my new 2002 Forester L yesterday, and I've noticed a few things that irk me and was wondering if it was something wrong with just my car.
1) When I start the ignition, the engine shutters for a fraction of a second.
2) When I have it in P, I can feel the whole car shuttering sleightly (not as bad as when I'm starting the car), but in D the car is fine.
3) When I accelerate on the freeway, I hear a faint high pitch sound. It increases by however much I push the gas.
Are these things normal? I haven't asked my dealership yet. I would like to get whatever info I can before I confront them.
thanks

Lupohki,
I have some of the same symptoms in my '01 but, no problems with driveability.
1) When I start the ignition, the engine shutters for a fraction of a second.
thats your wonderful car coming alive!
2) When I have it in P, I can feel the whole car shuttering sleightly (not as bad as when I'm starting the car), but in D the car is fine.
I think that it wants to be driven not parked.
3) When I accelerate on the freeway, I hear a faint high pitch sound. It increases by however much I push the gas.
just typical engine noise...wait until you get an intake if you do..then you'll hear NOISE, but what a wonderful powerful sound it is. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
Sorry if I seem like I'm just joking around, but I am..I have about 5K on my car and it drives superbly, no problems yet and yes I have experienced all these symptoms, but I don't think that they are symptoms of illness for your new vehicle. Congrats on a great choice for a car and welcome to the club. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

The first two sound normal for the Forester. There's a bit more roughness to the engine when first starting up and there is a bit of charateristic light "shake" that comes and goes at idle.
The last noise may be something else. A friend of mine was getting some feedback in his right tweeter. A quick visit to the dealer fixed it right up.

Ferretboy,
I'd slap you if you were my dealer and told me that http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif .. I made the same post on the Edmund's forester forum and 1 guy responded, but he says the engine isn't suppose to shutter, just "growl" and that it might be the ECU, Fuel injector, and/or CO2 sensor. DAMN, I just bought this car. Hope what he's saying isn't true. I'm going to test out another subaru on the lot and see if it happens on another car to be sure.
thanks for the info guys.

do keep us posted, perhaps my car is messed up and I don't even know it. Check your gas milage, I've been getting 22 on the average with heavy footed driving on streets and some highway.
~ferretboy loving the growl. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

My forester idled rough for a couple of days and at idle the revs kept bouncing between like 4-7 hundred the check engine light came on. Dealer said it was a faulty O2 sensor replaced under warrenty, now its runnning much smoother. If yours is idling rough and the revs change its probally the same problem. One quick question when did the MYO2 foresters come out?
