View Full Version : USDM WRX gas tank into 96 Impreza?
rallynutdon 07-23-2003, 03:43 PM Has anyone ever tried to get a USDM WRX gas tank and all it's hoses to work on a 96 car without using the WRX canister and other junk mounted back there under ther trunk? I'm trying but an having problems with the evaporation hose from the filler neck and the vent valve hose, what to do with them. This is on a rally car so smog or emission are not important. Thanks.

rallynutdon 11-18-2003, 03:35 PM I got it to work, but without the canister (really no place for it for rallying unless I had used long hoses and put it in the trunk). If anyone is interest in the specifics of the way I connected all the hoses for their own project, I can diagram it. It was a lot of trial and error.
stimpy 11-18-2003, 03:45 PM I am very interesting considering I am trying to stuff a newer gastank into my car to get emissions legal. My fuel system currently has the evaporation canistre sitting in the engine bay and that won't work with my EJ205 going in there.
Thanks,
-Jon
There are a few guys here that have built rally cars out of 95/97/etc. Imprezas with WRX/STI swaps and all the ones I know of use the WRX tank on those cars.
NicEJ25 11-18-2003, 08:57 PM i've been offerend a 02 WRX tank to put on my93 impreza converted into a MY01 RS. this is basicly to get a larger tank, with sensors to stop getting useless CEL. How long does it take, what need to be removed, and how much should I pay for it ?
thanks, Nic

rallynutdon 12-02-2004, 12:51 PM I'll have to look at it to give you a diagram of what worked for me. I should be able to do it this weekend.

then why didn't you leave the stock 96 tank in?
rallynutdon 12-02-2004, 04:34 PM Tank didn't really matter (put the WRX tank in cause the 96 tank was dented severely from rallying). The WRX feul pump and hoses is what caused the issue. On the WRX the canister is in the rear, on the 96 it's in the front (engine bay). I didn't want the canister in the rear to get torn off in a rally.
In my old 94 L with 02 WRX swap I was running the WRX tank without the canister(was in a hurry pulling stuff from the parts car and cut some of the hoses for the canister, never got around to getting new ones). I just used one of the fittings from the evap system that allowed me to run the hose from the tank for the evap system back into the large hose coming off the filler tube. Car ran great.
It's kind of a PITA. Nothing to technically difficult, just getting under the car and lugging the gas tanks around. A second set of hands could speed that up.

if gas isn't going in, theres a check valve by the tank, usually in the filler neck. that is most likely your problem. I work for toyota and we saw alot of problems with newer celicas with the check valves breaking and causing similar symptoms.

quick question. we can get gas in the car if we take the return line off (from the engine bay).
does that still sound like the same thing?
If that is the case, how hard is it to change the check valve?
