View Full Version : okay, motor mounts, how hard?
MGAMAN 07-24-2003, 10:37 PM swapped out the plugs, my car was running on 2 cylinders  but it is running on all four now, but the motor is rocking in the engine bay fairly hard at idle, so im definately gonna do the motor mounts even though the tranny mount has come in yet. my question is: how hard is it? Most people seem to say its pretty hard, im kinda worried about doing it myself.
Code-7 07-24-2003, 10:50 PM I wouldn't do it by myself. It's not so hard, as it a big PITA and potentially very dangerous if you don't have the right setup. Once you're under the car, you can see how it all works and how easy it should be, but the tight confines makes it a pain. It's a little intimidating to jack up the motor as well, we had a few wooden blocks duct taped together, put on top of the jack to give us the height necessary to push the block up; didn't trust it one bit but it worked. Just be sure to use jackstands and a big, tall jack and you should be ok. :)
At least another pair of hands is necessary, when lowering the motor back down, it helps to have another friend be able to push the motor with you in the directions you need it to go, so the studs line back up with their holes.
I wanted to talk to you more at continental, had to make sure I was getting the right gasket from the parts guy and he looked a little annoyed. He always looks mad. Hehe.
Just fyi, the tranny mount is absolute cake.
JordyB 07-24-2003, 11:51 PM Tranny easy. Motor, PITA. It can be done but just takes work, like code-7 says. With the lift at the shop, I would help you no problem. No Lift, no help from JordyB ;p
9o7wRx7o9 07-25-2003, 04:12 AM Jordy, he couldnt just lift it like we did with my car when installing the uppipe?

Lifting them out is easy, getting them loose and back tight again is another story, the lower crossmember is in the way. )O:
Code-7 07-25-2003, 06:10 AM Yeah, we ended up duct taping two long wrenches together. 'Breaking' it loose was the hardest part, because there was no leverage. After that, taking them off a couple of mm's at a time seem to take forever, not to mention you have to reverse the process when you reinstall. And there's two of them to do. :o
9o7wRx7o9 07-25-2003, 07:11 AM Hmmm, pick a project day and rent a hoist, cant you work on the mounts from the top if the engine is out of the way? :)
MGAMAN 07-25-2003, 04:32 PM Hey Jordy if you can help we have access to the lift, its what ive been using all week anyways. If youre free saturday do you mind helping?
JordyB 07-25-2003, 05:43 PM I will be working all day and then at the track all night, sorry. Think I might run the Wagon in time trials...;p
Call me tho, I might not even go...and would love to help. ;)
