View Full Version : Dyno charts from 2.5L turbos
Well, as promised, here are the dyno charts. Clicking on the picture will yield a high res original scan of the image.
The original scans are blue, and the reduced ones are red. I changed the color of the lines so I could reduce the size and not have the lines dissapear on me.
NOTE: All scans are property of the car owner, so ask permission before copying them.

Hi Nick,
The turbo in my car is a T3/T4 hybrid, just like the Minnam kits. But after driving both cars and looking at the dyno plots, we've come to the conclusion that my turbo must have a slightly smaller compressor wheel, making for less lag. My turbo spools up faster than the Minnam kits, that's for sure. It also holds that boost all the way to redline @ 7psi, so it is likely perfectly sized for 7-8psi. My car feels very balanced at its current boost level and can probably handle another 1-2psi increase before the turbo starts losing efficiency. But it's plenty fast enough for me now, so I'm leaving it where it is and enjoying the car.
The Minnam turbos, on the other hand, do appear to be a bit bigger in terms of compressor wheel sizing. Shiv, MattC, and I feel that those turbos really wake up at 9psi. A couple of unintentional (ahem, Matt!) test runs at 9psi seem to confirm that. Matt's car pulls hard at 9psi. Almost as hard as Joe's 10psi built motor monstrosity, I'd say. Not like my car doesn't pull hard either - a stock WRX has 217 ft/lb peak torque compared to my 244 ft/lbs that come on earlier in the rev range than the WRX. This just goes to show that saying you have a T3/T4 really means squat unless you take apart the turbo and measure the sizes of the turbine wheels and A/R ratios.

ColinL 04-03-2001, 08:52 AM Edwin, I do believe Shiv confirmed what we had already suspected... you have a Super 60 compressor wheel and everyone else has a T04E.
I'd like to see the spool times for ball-bearing GT series.
Yup, I probably do have a Super 60 wheel in there. I like it this way too so I'm not complaining. All those people claiming that T3/T4s will be too laggy simply have not actually tried it themselves. Even the Minnam turbos are not laggy, at least by looking at the dyno plots.
Colin, I'll be more than happy to try out a GT-25 turbo if you can find me one. Heck, I'll even go through the RWD conversion again if you give it to me. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif It's too bad that those nice turbochargers are so darn expensive. I personally would like to use a GT-30, I think.

when do you see boost efoo? i see boost around 2.8k rpms. is the minnam kit laggier than this? or do u see boost even quicker than 2.8 efoo?
Kevin Thomas 04-03-2001, 02:12 PM I really appreciate the dyno plot numbers. This gives everyone else here something to go by. I noticed the last dyno run was in mph and not rpms. Why was that? Also, what do stock WRX's have hp wise to the wheels?
It's also interesting to see where the power peek is, even with 7psi of boost. It's right at 5650-5800rpms. Really interesting. No need to raise the rev limiter or shift beyond 6000rpms at all.

Could you make a section at the I-club for dynocharts? This would be a very informative tools for us in the future if we can compare dyno charts. This could be the start of something huge. Of course Efoo, this would have to be with your blessings. Just a suggestion!
I think that's a great idea... only one small problem... not that many people actually have dyno plots of their cars... especially considering it's AWD.
Maybe a proof forum though... like for scanned in timeslips/dynoplots/videographed/photographed results.
IE. A picture of the car at the end of the quartermile with the timing light in shot. Same, but video'd.
I am all for a forum with nothing but hard core facts about how the car's perform, my only beef is people tend to exagerate to much without such proof, and it gets sort of annoying sometimes.

Joe's chart is in mph because the automatic shifted and kind of messed up the dyno. The rpm chart looked really funny so we ended up using mph instead. He's also got a beefed up motor and is running 10 psi, hence the huge amounts of power. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
No one has put a WRX on the dyno yet and posted the plots, so there's no real hard proof. But the published crank hp/torque specs are 227/217 respectively. That's all I have to offer, unless someone volunteers to let me convert their WRX to 2WD and pays for dyno time. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

ps: Yup, the power peaks are right at 5600-5800rpm. It follows the stock cams pretty well. You definitely do not need to hit the rev limiter to drive these cars fast.

I don't think the numbers will go down all that much with the AWD hooked up, at least in my case.. I was in RWD and still spun the rear driveshaft and rear diff, so I had more than 80% of the mobile hardware still active in the car. Only thing I was missing was the front diff and front axles. But then again, there's no hard numbers to back up that assertion, so take it with a grain of salt.
Sorry, there's no "no TEC" and "with TEC" numbers either. I have no desire to hook up piggyback controllers to my car in addition to a TEC-II just to obtain those numbers either. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif I don't think MattC got a dyno run in while he had piggybacks either.
I'm using a transmission from a JDM Legacy twin-turbo (GTB), and STi clutch/pressure plate. MattC is on a stock trans (his second) and ACT clutch I believe. My transmission is strong, but not unbreakable. I have no desire to find out how much it can take either, so don't ask me. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

Kevin, that's most likely a small case of overboost, as the boost builds pretty fast. I usually overboost to 8psi for a split second before the wastegate catches up. It's very brief though. The dip you see is magnified by the inertia of the engine and drivetrain.

Blindeye_03 04-03-2001, 09:58 PM I want to turbo my ride SOOOOO BAD...but I am afraid that my heavy driving will ruin the turbo and my motor...I drive alot in heavy traffic (to work) atleast 10miles a day (medium traffic)...
Would someone recommend turboing or staying N/A...

Yup, I know some of those other members with GT turbos. It'd be nice to hear about their experiences too. I for one don't plan to be around much longer either.
NickSTi, the kit was heavily modified by Rallispec in the course of their installation. The turbo has been re-located, the downpipe was completely redone from scratch, the intercooler has braces on it holding it securely to the engine block, the oil drain line was thrown away and a new stainless line with AN fittings substituted, all turbo->intercooler piping redone, and the wastegate mounting location was rotated 90 degrees and plumbed back into the exhaust. there's probably a few other things that I've forgotten about.
I start seeing boost pretty early, like 2600 rpms. the downpipe has a lot to do with it. MattC's experiences between a 2.5" and 3" downpipe confirm that.

How did Joe convert his autotranny from AWD to FWD? Did he simply remove the fuse that is in the engine bay, on the passenger side along the firewall? If so, I should've dyno'd this car a long time ago.

MattC 04-04-2001, 03:37 PM Thanks for posting the dyno charts Edwin. I just got back from Virginia International Raceway. I was attending an Audi drivers school. My car performed flawlessly for two days of really hard driveing on VIR's crazy 3.27 mile road course.
