View Full Version : gauge reading drop

I have 3 guages, manual boost, electronic EGT, and electronic oil pressure. When I try to close the window while the window is already closed, the reading on the EGT drops. The oil pressure reading drops too but not as much. Seems like it doesn't effect the boost gauge that much. Maybe because I'm off boost most of the time when I try this. Also, the more window I try to close, the more the reading drops.

Let say it read about 700C on the EGT, it drops to about 675C when with one window leveler pull. And drops up downs to somewhere like 600C when I pull all 4 window leveler. It drops more or less from time to time.

I have a votage meter build-in to my turbo timer. I was reading the votage before and after I pull the leveler but the votage doesn't drop that much and stay above 14V.

Does anyone know what's going on?
I'm thinking to do the grounding mod and see if it helps.

thanks

Since the boost gauge is mechanical, I'd be surprised if the boost reading also fluctuates. It's good that it doesn't, because it could be a big problem otherwise; one that's noticeable from the way the car runs. That would be quite far-fetched, imho.

Does your turbo timer tap power from a different point than the EGT & oil pressure? You might try tapping the EGT & oil pressure's power & ground from the same source as the turbo timer and see it the readings still vary.

What power supply are you tapping from. I suggest running a relay directly from the battery to the guages ,so that the readings do not drop. I had the same problem and my relays fixed it.

TaiChih hit it right on the nose. On a side note my headlights dim when I try to close an already closed window. My fix, not to roll up the window when it's shut. :p

When you hold down the window switch after it's closed, the load on the motor goes way up and so does the amount of current it draws. That's why you see a drop in system voltage when you do this, especially at idle when the alternator output is lower.
This isn't something you should be doing anyway because it puts strain on the window motor and regulator and may cause them to fail if you do it often. The bolts holding the regulator in place may also loosen.

I know I shouldn't hold down the window switch after it's closed. The main reason I'm writing this is trying to find out as much as I can and see if this explain the other problem that I'm having. The votage drops more when I see the other probelm (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=410583).
Also, I'm thinking whether the grounding mod is going to help or not.

Its interesting to me that your V stay's OVER 14v. i usually only reach 14v when my car is cold, and first starts up. I will then drop to 13.5 where i will stay right about there. low is 13.3, high being 13.7 when my car is warm. Grounding mod did improve the feel of my car, but i didn't really see any change in my voltage.

I'm going to see how much it changes next time i roll down/up my windows.

BOFslime: do you know the bolt size on the grounding points? I'm going to make my own grounding kit but I'm not sure what size of ring terminal to use.

thanks
