View Full Version : Reversed my Tail Light Bulbs...
Oo DaRk StAr oO 08-23-2003, 05:15 PM I think its a pretty cool mod. Havent seen anyone else here try it but I am sure its been done before. I dont have pics yet but heres what I did.
Switched the brake and the regular light so now the lights have a skyline/g35 effect.
jarelee 08-23-2003, 09:57 PM ya...i think i saw a picture of a guy who did that BUT i don't remember which thread i saw it under. It looked alright to me.
ATX25RS 08-23-2003, 09:59 PM the first WRX guy i ever met had this done.....it was in may of 2001....i thought it looked pretty cool, i always wondered why no one ever did this?..
Raslian 08-24-2003, 12:22 AM Pics? I don't quite understand what you did...
mike270 08-24-2003, 01:10 AM yeah....pics would be nice....i don't follow you:confused:

BOFslime 08-24-2003, 03:17 AM When the breaks go on.. does the outermost light go off.. and the two adjacent lights are brighter?
neat mod btw
Oo DaRk StAr oO 08-24-2003, 03:19 AM the center one lights up.
NewShockerGuy 08-27-2003, 05:26 AM Pretty neat!
How is this done?
Thanks :-)
-Nigel
Turbo9000 08-27-2003, 02:14 PM It sounds easy. Is it just a matter of switching a few wires?
Oo DaRk StAr oO 08-27-2003, 04:58 PM even easier. Just switch the bulb positions :D
NewShockerGuy 08-28-2003, 03:54 AM How do you get the the lights? When I open my truck there is the carpeting that is covering them.......
hmmm?
Thanks,
-Nigel
Raslian 08-28-2003, 04:22 AM Remove the tab on the carpet, remove the two plastic screws on the plastic piece near the trunk latch, pull back carpet, and they're right there.
NewShockerGuy 08-29-2003, 12:22 AM Welp tried it looked neat but when you change the one bulb over the wires are not long enough so the bulb does not twist and click in the socket... any remedy for that?
Thanks,
-Nigel
Raslian 08-29-2003, 10:44 PM Undo the twist ties around the wires.
Tobey 08-30-2003, 12:17 AM cool, subtle, different... can't see any problems with the law...
i'm going to do this tomorrow! i love free mods :D
Tobey 08-30-2003, 04:11 PM i just did this mod, took all of 10 minutes.
i had to trim the plastic prongs of the outer bulb housing but that was easy enough.

If you do trim them it would fit no problem...
They will fit if orientated just right & wiggled a touch...
Did it to three cars in 10 min.
L00K's secksay... not such a blob of red at night.:D
wrxnfect 09-02-2003, 04:25 AM ????? Help please! I just did this mod and for some reason the middle lights don't light up now. didn't unplug anything, just switched the bulb positions. Makes no sense...any ideas? BTW Looks great on 2004 with the round inner light
Genner 09-12-2003, 08:30 AM is the center brake light suppose to light up with this mod?
I just did it to my 04 STi. Very cool. It took me about 15 minutes becasue I had to wiggle the crap out of it to make it fit. But after a few minutes, they do fit in perfectly without trimming.
Very cool, thanks for the idea.
White 2.5rs 09-14-2003, 04:11 PM before i go diggin around could this work on an impreza 99rs?

no, our taillights only have one brake light bulb each...so no switching is possible.
if you have GC STi tails, you can try to put your reverse bulb in your turn signal spot and TS in teh Rev. spot...that way you have a large reverse light and small Turn signal...
i think im gonna go try this real fast, lol.
Murray
Edit:
just swapped the 2 bulb sockets, looks kinda weird, i think i like it, only did the driver side, tired to take some pics, but didnt work..damn camera...then swapped it back to normal.. i think i may swap em tomorrow tho.. the turn signal bulb doesnt fit perfectly, kinda wobbles a bit, but i think i can figure something out to keep it in there nice and toight.

djerickd 09-15-2003, 02:31 AM Just did mine :)
Diversion 09-15-2003, 11:44 AM If i'm not mistaken don't JDM WRXs and STis light up in this manner? I've seen a video of a WRX/STi running around and the brakes lit up differently.. can someone confirm this? Thanks..
Jay
Murray 09-15-2003, 04:42 PM i have seen cars have them a few different ways..
when wiring in my friends trailor wiring harness, i noticed his center bulb was never hooked up to anything..EVER. it has like a 1 inch wire that just is cut at the end, and there is nothing that it ever attached to..its like this on both sides of his car.
its an 02 WRX sedan btw.
this mod is weird on GC8 STi taillights...kinda confusing since the turn signal is now towards hte inside edge of the taillight.

Mine is the same way ... but its just one of the wires going to the bulb... a green wire to be exact. Have never figured out quite why its like that, but it is...

NewShockerGuy 09-17-2003, 02:51 AM I've noticed when I try to reverse the bulbs for some reason the fitting seems to be different when trying to switch them as far as places go... They don't seem to want to go into the hole and then turn and click... they don't even want to go into the hole until you put them back in the orignal places...
I dig the look, but then when I stare at it at my car I am like...hmmm don't know if I like it..hehehe

Yeah, I used a little tiny file and just filed away the very edge on the tail light... now they fit in both of the holes....
Genner 09-17-2003, 06:32 PM are you switching the bulb itself or the connectors to the bulbs?
Just a simple swap?
Neaners 09-17-2003, 06:56 PM unscrew the bulb AND the connector from the housing ... and just swap them. each bulb is triggered by a different event (i.e apllying the brake, etc). by switching the bulb (and connector) you are just having that bulb light in a different place.

I just tried switching the connectors, but the one doesn't seem to want to go into the hole...
I feel alittle uneasy as to what to file.. I don't want to file too much then have the whole casing come out the back if I hit a bump or anything..etc

Well myself, I had the tail light removed from the car. With it out I was able to set it on a garage run and i could actually look down into it and see where it didnt line up... you just need to file maybe three strokes on the outer edges on the light itself.
wgb113 10-06-2003, 09:00 PM wrxnfect,
Did you have to cut the tape used to hold all of the bulb wires together in order to swap positions? What order did you do yours in? Using the driver's side as an example, going left to right I was thinking of the following order:
Left: Taillight
Center: Brakelight
Right (Round): Brake/Taillight
BTW, did anyone notice that on the rally car they do not use the center bulb at all? Their setup, compared to the example above is:
Left: Brake
Center: None
Right: Brake/Tail
Is there anything agains the law about not having more than one tailight??
wrxnfect 10-08-2003, 05:01 AM This is my setup:
Left: Brake/Taillight
Center: Brakelight
Right (Round): Taillight
I didn't remove any tape - the wires are stretched to their limit and the tape at their junction covers the solder point
wgb113 10-08-2003, 08:48 AM wrxnfect,
That's the setup I ended up going with last night. The original plan of having the brake/tail in the round spot wouldn't work because of the way they had everything wired and taped.
I was unable to get the passenger side white connector back into it's slot. I couldn't get the wires to pass under it so it just kind of tucked in there.
Bill
Neaners 10-08-2003, 02:17 PM pics everyone??
wgb113 10-08-2003, 05:22 PM I can post pics if someone will host them.

zaarin 11-16-2005, 02:51 PM Do you guys know if this will work on a wagon? Our brakelights are a little different... Also all the images are dead.
ride5000 11-17-2005, 09:59 AM it will not work on a wagon.
even 2 years later! ;)
ShortThrow 12-12-2005, 11:03 PM I need to bump this with a warning;
I just tried to do the left light on my 04 sti to the following
outerleft-brakelight
center-none
inner(circle)-tail/brake
When I was doing it i quickly figured out that my wires would not stretch far enough. So I cut the proper take in trying to lengthen them. It would have worked except there is a wire that connects the BLINKER light and the ORIGINAL tail light, the wire is the power wire. They appeared to be 2 seperate wires just taped together, but i soon found out that they are bound together down at the actual metal wiring by some bind, so i had to cut and splice ect. ANOTHER PROBLEM! In order for the blinker now to funtion properly is must still be connected to the ORIGINAL tail light power wire (otherwise it will flash at less than half strength and some how cause the right turn blinker to flash at less than half strength) SO WARNING DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IN A SHORT PERIOD IF TIME BECAUSE WIRINGS HAVE BEEN INCONSISTANT AMOUNG NEWER MODELS!
GregsblueRex 03-29-2006, 11:25 AM I need pics. I also would like pics of the process.
