WOW..
of all the cars i've driven, (rx-7 twin turbo, supra twin turbo, 93 cobra running 9 second 1/4's ) NEVER have I been so impressed with a cars turbo.

Who has had previous experience with this car?
What did you guys think.. any input is welcome

Mitsubishi Eclipse is a pretty fast car. But the rear visibility is very very bad. Plus the 4WD system on the Eclipse GSX is nothing compare to Subaru's AWD. Plus the Eclipse has very very bad weight distributed on each wheel. The front driver side is heavier than the passanger side, which mean when you take right turn hard, the noise is going to dive harder than taking left turn. It has the power to give some kick, but not enough to get you WOW. Plus the car is very heavy, somewhere around 2800~3000lb. Personally, I like the look, but never like the handling. But with some work this car can be pretty fast. There is a Eagle Talon TSI (Eclipse sister car) in Vancouver that does 11 sec 1/4mi very impressive for a car like that. Cheers!

What year did she get? I had a 90 Eagle Talon AWD. It was a blast, but not the total car that the Subaru is. The Drive train has its faults, the tranny is rather small so there is usually a problem with the synchros and the DSM club has quite a few posts on how to help this. Also there was a safty recall on the tranny out-put shaft that leaks the fluid out of the transfercase. If this has not been fixed make sure it has because it can cause all 4 wheels to lock-up. I think there were acouple of wrongfull death lawsuits about this (reason for the recall). But other than that, it is a real nice car with lots of aftermarket possibilities.

I bumped my boost and easily got around 230 horse for free buy removing a restrictor in the boost control. Oh, another thought, the factory boost gauge does not monitor boost, so if you do anything to the car to increase boost get a real boost gauge. If you don't you'll be asking for trouble.

I hope she enjoys it, and lets you drive it once or twice. If you have anyquestions e-mail me.

McClaren-IIRC the Eclipse GSX is closer to 3200lb. I actually considered a '99 GSX before I got my RS but it was ~$8k more, smaller inside, and would've been ridiculous to insure where I live. Never the less, the turbo kick would be nice.

Sev? Have a look see at http://www.dsm.org

There's sooo much info for you, you're gonna get every question answered before you ask it. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif It's the site for DSM's and started in the early 90's when the car 1st came out and the birth of the web. The guy who runs it, Todd Day, also has a service that will modify the ECU for a varitey of tuning options.

Then dsm.org also has a GREAT search feature so you don't have to feel like a newbie. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/wink.gif

McLaren...ask yourself why the tranny is the weak link? When you're running 50%-100% more hp out of a stock tranny with common mods guarenteed you'll be blowing things up in no matter WHAT car. It's only a matter of time you start hearing about 2.5 tranny blowups. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif So they've had a recall or two...that got started by the club until someone at NHTSA listened. Soo what. LOL

In the New England region and the "east coast" is DSM terriroty. With about $1000 in mods, self done, you'll be running that car in the 13's.

Yes it's heavy, but it can be easily overcome by brute force.

Sluggish handling? Nahh...just get some GC coilovers with kyb's. You know the drill. Same thing works well with that car.

Sev, also check out http://www.buschurracing.com for a host of mods that can be done and the stages you want to do them in.

Enjoy! I know I did. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif

Plus the car is very heavy, somewhere around 2800~3000lb

Try 3300 lbs. For some reason that car feels a lot faster than the numbers show. When you take off, it feels like you're in a rocket. But 0-60 is in the upper 6's. What's even more unusual is the 2000 Eclipse GT's power. With a 200hp V6, it's 0-60 is in 7.5s??? But yea, those Eclipses are pretty fast. That AWD system is practically useless on any surface other than dry pavement. It feels just like a FWD car. Understeer is even worse than the Impreza.

The boost does come on pretty strong though. The car really lags < 3000, but 3500 and up, it pulls like a real sports car. Over 60mph, it's apparent that it'll blow most other cars away, probably even an Integra Type R. That stupid speed limiter is set for the 130's someplace (137 I believe), but if it didn't have it, the car would be able to do close to 150.

I had some previos experience with a GSX.. hehe. like you can see, it was not all good experience.. hehe

I had this car 2 years ago.. I never think that I will ever buy a Mitsubi****, but I did.. The car was great for the feeling, was fast, nice looking, but damm, the transmission, the drivetrain was very weak.. After beating the hell out of the car, I was having some slack in the drivetrain and transmission.. That was the big problem of that car.. The other thing was the cheap leather, after a while, the leather was having a lot of cracks in it.. But damm, I love the style of that car.. I almost bought another one just for that, but I had to convince me that I dont want another one..
That was my first AWD car, and that is why I got a Subaru now.. I did not want to buy another FWD car, and no more Mitsubi****, so, I did not have a lot of choice.. Audi or Subaru.. Audi was too expensive in insurance.. So I went to Subaru..
hehe.

Ok guys, enjoy the picture.. just for your information, I did not get injure in this accident, not a scratch, and that was at more then 115mph in a wall.. hehe. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif

Just curious, what about the AWD system on the Eclipse makes it inferior to the Subaru system?

Also, why is it only useful on dry pavement? I have a Lancer Evo I which I would imagine has an almost identical AWD system to the Eclipse and it certainly makes the most of AWD on all surfaces.

I think the car feels impressive because it has a small turbo which builds boost quickly, so that when you floor it you prety much get an instant shove.

As far as I know the only difference in the AWD in the DSMs is the transverse layout of the engine/transaxle assembly and the hardware that allows the rear propshaft to work.(turns the power 90 degrees) But the center diff mechanism is the same (conventional open diff with a viscous slip limiter)

Hey guys
heh
She's gonna come pick me up now and and im gonna drive it to san francisco

The CAR IS freaking awesome. . but as u guys said I agree

1.) AWD on that car sux but it's STILL AWD!
2.) weight distribution is horrible
3.) GOing 100+ is HORRIBLE (wiggly)
4.) There was a factory recall at 4/10/00 for the upper ball joint or something like that
5.) Looks nice.. but The BACK IS TOO FREAKIN HIGH!! haha
6.) She got a VERY good deal on it 39,000 miles @ $11680.00 is an awesome deal hehe (the guy at the dealer liked her http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/wink.gif
Guys I beat a mustang GT 99 yesterday, a gmc truck, a ford truck
hehe
and like 2 other imports yesterday I love this car http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/biggrin.gif

I wouldn't buy any old Mitsubishi. I'd also be hesitant to buy a new one considering their past. Simply put, Mitsubishi's are not reliable. The old 3000gt was crap, and so were the eclipses. The main reason the new eclipse has a 6 cylinder NA engine is because of their reliability problems with the turbo 4 of the old one.

No one is taking me up? I guess the Mitsubishi AWD just sucks because Subaru didn't make it. At least they have a rear LSD which cannot be said for most people's RSs
http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gifSeriously though, what makes the Subaru AWD system better than the Mitsubishi system? Looking for technical answers here. I guess the fact that Mitsubishi's engine is transvers makes the system slightly more complicated (more parts) and maybe more susceptile to reliability problems.

Wreckleford- I think I read somewhere that the AWD system in the Eclipse is 85% front biased in the torque department, but don't quote me on that.

Not true. It is a 50:50 split.

my mom has a 1999 Mitsu GSX...it is a very fun car to drive and i like it a lot...i hate how heavy it is tho, doesn't seem nearly as flickable either..but man those straightaways are a blast...and people stare sooo hard when they hear the turbo/blowoff valve on stoplight romps..

Having driven a hand-me-down 92 Eagle Talon TSi AWD I find myself, like Wreckleford, wondering exactly what it is about the DSM AWD system that makes it so inferior?

If anything, I'd say that the system is just as good as Subaru's.

The car itself, OTOH, sucked ass. Too heavy, under-braked (read: warped rotors from here to eternity), and all sorts of transmission problems (though I gotta admit we DID abuse our car). http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/wink.gif

We have a 95 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. It is fast. Just G-Tech'd it last weekend at just under 200hp.. These cars haul. If you ever want ideas on CHEAP mods for it e-mail us and we will tell ya a few.. We have't spent a lot of money on mods for it yet.. But some of the small ones make a big difference.

I'm not knocking the cars, I loved mine. The AWD system is generally the same as the subaru except the Engine is transverse. It uses a viscous center diff like the Subies and many had a Limited slip rear as well. Mitsubishi realized the problem with this tranny though while using it in the Lancer. The lancer Evolutions 1-3 used the same drivetrain as the DSMs. When they brought out the Lancer Evolution 4 they turned the engine 180 and put in a much bigger trany and transfercase to solve most of their breakage issues they had with the older system. They are great cars with a wonderful following. If you maintain the tranny and take it easy on the high rpm launches it should give you no problems. Do a little web research, what you will find on the car should make you quite happy.

I just like my Subie better. I think the AWD system on the subie is better because it was always designed to be AWD. The weight setup and low center of gravity of the boxer motor makes life a whole lot easier.

Good GOD.. I thought I was having problems with my car. The Mitsusushi GSX that my girl got is having turbo problems,(which need to be replaced, like 1400$) door lock problems, and a lot of other problems . Funny how the used car wasn't put through the normal "inspection" that they need to go through.

I have to interject here...I'm sorry to hear about people that are having problems with their Eclipse, as I have owned my 95 GSX since new and have maintained and babied the car while still installing a heathly dose of mods...I have had little to no problems with relability and absolutely love the car.

hey shadrack,
she's getting this weird "whinning noise" during startup in mornings and during long time parking then starting up.

I checked the backround of her car and no accidents or anything. pretty damn weird. ill update u to let u know what happens

You've probably just never been a car with an undersized turbo. Feels whizzy and zingy but falls flat above 5000rpm.

Sev,
Mine had the whining problem at start up in its latter years. It is the turbo before it starts to spin. As the Bushings get old it takes a lot of presure to get the impeller spinning. If you said she is already having turbo problems this is just another simptom.

Sorry your haveing problems. Check around you should be able to pick up a refirbed unit pretty cheap.

The old mitsus were not crap. I had a 90 gsx that had very few problems. Also, my dad has a 91 3000GT vr4. No problems. I think some of the cars got a bad rap due to the amount of abuse they took. If you drive ANYTHING hard for an extended period of time, it will break. If I were not driving a RS, I would be driving a GSX or a VR4.

A friend of mine has a 99 GSX that he's dumping tons of cash into for mods. Good thing is that it has a ~210hp turbo engine that has been built up to 400+ for the street. He has replaced the brakes and suspension completely, and it rides quite nicely and races fairly well at the SCCA races here in Sac. Interior was trash. Everything squeaks so he took most of it out.

-Funny thing is that after about 4000 in engine, suspension, and other mods, he can run 13.8 in the 1/4, but I kick his a** with my stock RS in the SCCA races.

That's that exact problem she had!!! What's the cure? new turbo? the dealer claimed a 1300-1400 price i think
