View Full Version : GC8 Cages?
Paisan 08-26-2003, 06:05 PM Hey guys, I'm looking for a cage for my GC8 body car, but no one makes one that is SCCA/NASA legal for road racing, only FIA ones that have too thin of a wall. Is there anyone out there who is also interested in getting GC8 cages made? Kirk which is one of the most famous road racing cage builders is willing to make cages for our cars but needs someone local to them to leave them the car for a few days. Contact me on here or via PM/IM/E-mail. I'll get some more details on their location etc.

Ver.III 08-26-2003, 07:27 PM Normally wouldn't FIA homologated cages set president over SSCA rules? I know for touring car there is a spec FIA cage for tarmac cars. Try Custom Cages in the UK.
Paisan 08-26-2003, 07:30 PM I'm not sure? I've been getting different feedback from different people. Most of the SCCA and NASA guys I've spoken to all say that the wall thickness has to be XYZ which is thicker than the Sparco and OMP "FIA" cages that are being sold. I'd hate to buy one, and then get screwed when I go to get the car inspected!
Anyone know of an SCCA/NASA approved cage for the GC8s?

No. FIA cage rules are drastically less-stringent than SCCA rules. FIA cage rules are a joke.

You'll have to get a custom cage. I too called Kirk and got the same answer. If you have lots of time/money, you could let Kirk experiment on your car. I highly suggest you go to a reputable cage builder and get it done there.
Ultimately, if you should ever need the cage, you'll be happy you had it custom built / welded in.

Geek Guy 08-27-2003, 12:49 AM Check out Brent Hatch, of Hatch Engineering in Vermont. He builds all of the cages for Tim O'Neil's cars, and a bunch of other rally cars, including one of our teams.
Top notch work.

I second Brent. His work is amazing and very reasonable. Here's his work on my MY96 Impreza:

Paisan 08-27-2003, 10:59 AM Thanks guys! I knew I could count on my fellow Nasiocers to hook me up with some relatively local places to get a cage in my '96.

Paisan 08-30-2003, 03:17 AM Found a local guy up in the adirondacks near my summer house to build me a cage :) Relatively in-expensive for custom work ~$700-900 for DOM.

zzyzx 08-30-2003, 11:10 AM Honestly, that's too cheap for a full custom cage... You should make sure he's very familiar with building SCCA legal cages.

Geek Guy 08-30-2003, 12:56 PM I agree that is WAAAY to cheap for a cage. The materials alone cost maybe $1000 or $1500. The SCCA has strict regulations regarding the type, and thickness of the cage materials, as well as how many gussets, location, etc.
A cage is NOT something to skimp on. Your life is at stake, ya know?
Paisan 08-30-2003, 01:30 PM Labor is very cheap up here. This guy builds race cars for a living, he isn't gonna skimp on it, trust me.

Geek Guy 08-30-2003, 05:34 PM Well, if you got some to quote you a job at $700, your friend is underselling his business. He could easily charge $4k.
Before you commit to any cage, get a copy of the rules for your specific application, and show them to the cage builder. $700 sounds like about right for putting in a roll-bar only, honestly.
I'd love to see the pictures of the cage he builds for $700, and an invoice showing the exact bill of materials. What's the phrase? If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is?
*We* don't have to trust you - *you* have to trust him with your life.
Paisan 08-31-2003, 12:07 AM Yup, we'll see how much the total is when he gets the specs. You never know, he might look at em, and say that it'll cost more than that. There will be pics, etc once it's done. :) I'm also going to have him work up plans for Hoops for the GC8s as well, since he'll be in there making my whole cage. It might work out.
He did tell me that it'll cost more cause I am requesting DOM, if it wasn't DOM, he'd be charging in the $400-500 range. Who knows maybe I found a good thing for all of us.
