View Full Version : The Honda Del Sol, the cool car that almost was
OK I will admit it the Del Sol had alot of potential. It was lights, rev'd high could take a Prelude 2.2L engine or a turbo or supercharger. Now all that Honda screwed up on was that it was FWD. Honestly don't you think the car would have been a blast if it had been a RWD? It would have been alot like the Miata. Only not a convertable. Sit the engine in there front to back versus sideways, make it RWD and available with a 1.8L VTEC or 2.2L VTEC as optional engines. Hell maybe even a Type-R motor. If only Honda would have forseen the success of the Lotus Elise or looked at the Miata a little more. Oh well I guess its all a little too late now. Sorry if its a post about a Honda but it was on my mid today.
Yeah, I've got a friend that just picked one up, they've got a cult following almost as strong as our imprezas even.
I always thought the Del Sol was a neat idea.. a little roadster, almost a convertable so it's better for bad weather.. and with the roof panel in it's stiffer.
I agree, would have rocked if it wasn't so much a civic and more a s2000..
but it's dead now...
scootr 02-20-2001, 04:41 AM My friend has a Del Sol that has a acura GSR motor with pretty much all of the engine work done(cams, intake etc). His best time is a 14.3 and I think he could do better. I think that his car is awesome and he can make it even better. It is a honda though.

trojan9x 02-20-2001, 05:16 AM personally, i like the CRX myself better than the del sol. small, quick, and nimble. can't beat that with a stick
peepshow 02-20-2001, 05:55 AM Cool little cars, but I thought they were kind of heavy. ~2800lbs. IIRC. Anyone know for sure off the top of their heads?
- Trent
the heaviest model was the delsol VTEC with the DOHC B16a 160hp engine (Same as the 99-00 si) and it was around 2,500+ lbs
the del sol S and del sol Si (iirc those were the other models) were lighter than that..
mrbell 02-20-2001, 07:48 AM I have always heard that the chassis on those was really rubbery feeling...
but one thing that would have made the Del Sol really cool would have been to make it mid/rear engine. Actual competition for the mr2 perhaps? I did see one tho where the guy had punched louvers in the rear decklid... and they weren't even all that well done... I had to laugh at that... it had a terrible paint job too... A little off topic, but while I'm on the subject of people doing really silly things to their cars, there's a Mustang(approx '87, I don't keep up w/ those) w/ chrome 18's or 19's and the fake disk brake inserts that don't even come close to looking real... it's probably not even the 5.0L... haha
Kostamojen 02-21-2001, 12:08 AM Girls car.
Its true, its true!
Not if it would have been a RWD and a 2.2L VTEC or Type-R motor. I don't see anybody calling the Lotus Elise a girls car.
Kostamojen 02-21-2001, 12:58 AM Its got nothing to do with the car itself, its who buys them!
Del Sol, New Beetle's, Celica's... All bought by a majority of young women. I still like them! But I couldnt buy one http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif
Snoopy 02-21-2001, 05:50 AM My girl friend has one.
Like all Civics, it's a mess to change the oil. Removing the alternator is a pain coz it's behind the engine and so you gotta remove the axle to pull it out since there is not enough space to remove it from above.
Other than that, my gf loves it. Her two sisters would rather have her keep the Civic DX coz the Sol can only take two people. Heh....time for them to get a license.
Texas25RS 02-21-2001, 05:55 AM I really wanted a new Celica GT-S BUT when I sat in one to test drive it... I had to FORCE my leg under the steering wheel...
There is a reason why mostly girls buy them, I would say anybody taller than 6'0" can't fit in one comfortably.
As for the Del Sol and the CRX... I still would love to have either one to be able to "play" with and really make into a r i c e rocket..
tonyc-mpls 02-22-2001, 11:00 AM Has anyone thought about putting the rear power window into a Brat?? strange, but the motor might just fit??

subaruwrx 02-22-2001, 11:31 AM I wish it was like the del sol LM in Gran Turismo. If that was a real Civic CRX-Del Sol, I would buy one. That is a great idea. MR, and a light b16a powered car, and that would be a blast. But Alas, Honda didnt see the need to follow the idea brought forth in Gran Turismo. That game is way ahead of its time.

hotsam 02-22-2001, 01:14 PM I used to have a del Sol. It was a fun little car, except for the squeeks and rattles. Jello on springs has more stiffness than that car.
Hades69 02-22-2001, 01:30 PM I have a crx and love that thing till death i know it's dead and i still love it but i would love to have a del sol more though just on the afct that you can do soo much more performance wise the engine bay is a bit bigger (if you can believe that)and it also came with a V-Tech i don't think that the crx ever had one of those engines unless it was a transplant either way they are both great cars to just throw around you can fit anywhere great for fast driving in heavy dallas traffic and dallas parking
Patrick L 02-22-2001, 04:21 PM I got one word for you.... DarkSol!!!
It's a 240hp, 12.9 sec 1/4 miles DelSol with a modified Type-R motor. www.darksol.com (http://www.darksol.com)
Goto showcase and look for David Stewart's 1994 Honda delSol.
He also autocrosses it and was at the SoloII National last year.
if im not mistaken , the CRX in japan came with the DOHC VTEC b16a (160hp) engine that came in the delsol VTEC and civic Si 99-00
MrHorspwer 02-22-2001, 05:14 PM A small RWD Honda+ high revving VTEC 4 cylinder+ 2 seats= S2000... see, Honda did get it right
Apparently they didn't. We're talking about a light smaller car that's fun to drive. Also the price of the S2000 kept alot of buyers away. That would be why you don't see alot of Miata owners jumping ship to buy a S2000.
