Ok this is not my first Scooby and I have had my STi since July 1st. This is the first time my car has sat for the weekend.
I started it up this morning and the engine had a loud tapping sound and it continued until the engine warmed up. Now it has the normal little tapping sounds that are typical for the boxer engine.
My reason for writing this is to ask....Should I be concerned?

this happened to me after the car was parked on a steep hill for a few days, as long as it goes away it's nothing to worry about.

that makes me feel a little better....
it's just a bit alarming to hear in a new car.... Ummm why am I hearing that?
Yeah it did go away so I don't feel so worried..

The STI has hydrolic lifters? Wild. From the 80's to mid 90's subaru had them then went to solid units. Why the switch back?
actually not sure about that .. in fact the more i think about it ..it probblay dosen't ..

They didn't switch back, there are no hydraulic lifters in the STI.

You think your car has a tapping sound, listen to an EVO's engine. Now that sounds like something to worry about (but it isn't).

A little ticking from the valvetrain isn't anyhting to be worried about. I wonder what you will think when it gets cold and the piston slap starts

My impreza has done that for the last 10 years. I think all subaru's do it, i wouldn't be too worried about it. Just keep a check on it.

the tapping is because the oil isnt on every part of the valvetrain yet. dont rev it during this time, that would be a bad thing. the oil will eventually be distributed over everything and the tapping will end (unless youreout of oil) ;)

my point wasn't that the engine taps, as I stated I've owned Subarus for some time now. They all tap.
This was a considerably louder tapping separate from the usual boxer engine tap sound.
I have not heard it since that one time.
