View Full Version : STi: fuel cut or hesitation in hard 90 degree left-hand turns

I've had my 2004 STi for a month now and it's got 2500KMs on it.
The other day I was sitting at the lights waiting to make a left-hand turn. I nailed it while turned left quite hard and the car hesitated for about an eighth of a sec, then kicked back in. It was like a bunny hop of sorts.

If I rev it enough, say above 3000 you don't really notice the problem, and it's worse with the A/C on.

I'm running 94 octane, and it happens bwt 1/3 and a full tank.

My service manager does not know what's causing the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Its defective.

Ok, not really, but I am sure with enough G force, the stock fuel pump cannot overcome the oppossing forces. My friend had a Porsche C4s and during cornering hard the oil pressure would drop significantly because the oil pump could not overcome the G-force.

There I go again, comparing the STI to the porsche.

Imprezas seem to have a long history (going back to the GC8) of misadjusted or fault fuel tank pickups.

I have this happening to me too.

Low revs (~2500), low speed (20mph), 90 degree left turns, then you stamp accelerator coming out of the turn... engine does not cut off, just no power to all wheels for a quarter of a second (seems forever). Real real weird. I hear no diff binding noises, dccd set to auto.

Don't think it has to do with gas...don't think. We should experiment and see if this happens with dccd set in manual mode with diff set to full open... could this be a querk of the auto diff mapping?

Have not reproduced this during a right turn...

Opinions?

Are you sure it was to the left?

I was at a track day this weekend and when cornering hard to the right with less than 1/3 of a tank induced a momentary sputter or in my case the thing shut completly off as I was entering the next corner! I almost used the STI as a high speed lawn mower. :furious:

Mrt does sell a surge tank if you are in my position I think it would be a worthy mod. Check there site it is 1/3 the way down on the subi page.

more to the point subaru has a history of not telling lies with the fuel guage. Most modern cars have a literal 1/4 tank left when it hits empty on the dash. This is to prevent fuel slosh problems, and to keep the fuel pump from overheating.

with less than 1/3 of a tank of course a hard right screws you up... that's common in the subaru world... fuel goes to the opposite side of the tank from the pump... badaboom... no gas = no go...;) just make sure to keep more fuel in it...:D

Car just did it again on a left turn at an "intersection" with low rpm (2500)... right at the "apex", no splutter, its like the car goes into neutral!!!... no power to any of the wheels for about 2/3 of a second. Tank in this case was 2/3 full...

 It is? There is no way a car with that much gas should slosh enough to cause it to not pump fuel. I autox with 1/4 to 1/3 tank of gas. Get it checked out...it can't be normal.

That's notorious on the RS... tons of us had that problem... we always have to make sure to show up with 1/2 a tank +...

My '02 WRX does the SAME thing. The fuel pump has never been touched.

fuel starvation sounds like the car is about to shut off. ITs sputtering and dying and can barely sustain idle.

Some people's description just sounds like turbo lag.

I had a momen t of fuel starvation on the track last Wednesday... Happened on extremely hard cornering at about 1/8 tank.

Seems semi-reasonable.

My pickup may not be perfectly adjusted... I started running out of gas on slow city streets once with 1.5 gallons in the tank.

Careful driving on Empty.

Hmmm, in a way it does feel like turbo lag...like its sucking up everything (to the extreme). No such cut-offs at higher rpms...
