Nah, XT6 all the way!
First with full time awd and lockable center differential
First with a 6 cylinder
First with the 5x100 lug pattern all subarus now use
First with the front strut design all subarus now use
First with electric power stearing
First with speed sensative height adjust suspension
Highest HP available to that date
Highest torque to that date
I could go on.....

READ MY FIRST POST!

Yes, I sat in it, even got to pop the hood...

As for the XT. I took pics of it because that was my first Subaru.
I had a Pearl White '89 XT6, with AIR rizide!

I loved that car.

I guess what I was asking wasn't answered in your first post. You may have been in a subaru shootout in England

Ok, hi, I was at the East Coast Subaru Shootout this past weekend in Beaver Springs Pa.
SOA had their 22b there.
It was nice.
We drag raced in the rain. That was interesting.

ImprezaRSinCT: Need any other parts? Im stripping mine down to become a dirt only vehicle, plenty of left over stuff.

Ciper, I'm only in need of the tranny, everything else works fine on my car (Air suspension, AC, power steering, etc). But if you're looking to offload parts, try posting on http://xt.zybx.com/phpbb/index.php , you might get some offers.

Yes, XTs are cool - almost got a XT6 once. But I don't think those are the good points of the XT - they're too flaky. And what's that weird stuff you need to buy from Subaru for the power steering????

Cybrid

Power stearing doesnt really fail. Air suspension has the same problems no matter what vehicle its installed on. When the items work they are awesome. I converted my XT6 to standard suspension so no problems for me.

1. XT6s were the second with that trans, RXs were first and they had selectable HI/LO gears with LSD rear- got both in the XT
2. ER27 6cyl = 145hp. EA82T modded with VF10 in the above XT = est. 180+hp in its "pre-tuned" current phase
3. 5 lug conversion, roughly $80 in junk yard parts and a saturday afternoon
4. read above
5. electronic power steering...dont get me started ($25 a can for power steering fluid and a recall in 1988 for a potential crash hazard)
6. 1985 was the first year for this in any of the GL10 turbo models (XT, wagon, sedan)
7. read number 2
8. read number 2 again

DJ9iron,

thanx so much for showing support and snapping pics of my ride...i didnt know the car would go over so well at an impreza event - but im happy to see some new-gen guys got a kick out of it, very very cool

1. I did research and the RX DID NOT have the awd transmission to start. It wasnt available until late model year 87 (sold in mid 87, produced early 87). The XT6 had the transmission late 87 as MY88. So you are right the RX beat it out buy a small amount. Problem is the XT6 had it as the standard while the 87 RX got a mix of 4wd and awd transmissions.

2. Im talking about stock power here, the RX had 115hp@5200
134tq@2800 while the xt6 had 145hp@5200 and 156tq@4000 . Quite a bit difference, especially since the xt6 only weighed 2800 pounds.

3. STOCK, Im saying the xt6 was the starting ground for the current wheels we all use.

4. Again, doesnt matter what can be added on to the car. The donor parts are coming from the XT6 so its totally valid.

5. Im talking about when everything is working properly. The electric stearing is far better than the rack in the RX. Especially since you dont draw power from the engine constantly. Plus I have full power while idling, or even while the engine IS TURNED OFF.

6. I dont understand, I said "First with speed sensative height adjust suspension" and you said "1985 was the first year for this in any of the GL10 turbo models (XT, wagon, sedan)"

7, 8 read my number two. The 1.8 turbo produced less hp and near equal torque as the first generation NA ej22, a far more bulletproof motor I might add.

Dennis, no problem!

My XT6 was my first car! RIP:(

I have a friend that was with me at the shootout that has an XT6 as well.
When we saw your car, our mouths dropped! "XT Turbo, Woah:eek: " hahaha

Have fun with it!

Ummm not true on the speed sensative height suspension... well KINDA... 85+ GL-10's with air suspension WOULD automatically lower at 55 MPH is you had them in the raised position.

And the 5X100 lug pattern can be adapted to EA82 (85-94 DL/GL/RX and Loyale models) This includes the front struts because you need to grab pretty much all of the suspension for the retrofit.

XT6's are awesome cars though :D

ciper-

i had an XT6 with the 4EA 4WD trans (click my pic links and you can see pics in there) and it was the best car ive ever owned...but it took me working at a subaru shop to keep it on the road sometimes (you get quite knowledgeable about the cybrid system and pneumatic suspension when your constantly fixing it).

about the air suspension...the first cars with this system were in the 1985 model year, they came standard on any GL10 model with turbo and 4WD...back then they even had a height control button, but both systems were contolled by what the car thought the ride height should be - which was pretty funny sometimes. canadian XT6 models however, got the height control button.

the AWD HI/LO trans that was in the RX debuted in 1986 in the Full Time 4WD Turbo 3 Door, which, the next year was painted white, fitted with a body kit and labled RX, the 3 Door also had the same VIN designation as the RX models. the previous (85-early 87) RX models had a 5spd D/R with LSD.

Flowmastered87GL: When I say speed sensative I mean the height was continiously adjusting dependant on speed, lowering to the lowest setting at high speeds. A High Low button system is seperate.

You dont seem to understand the importance of the 5x100. I dont care if you could convert the car to a 10 lug hub. The point is that the XT6 is important because it was where subaru tested many of the designs/systems used today. Just look at the idle control curcuitry for example.

Whoa! Did that thing have a hood scoop or at least a hood vent?? I like the old school subie, kinda makes me realize my car's history. Its funny because back when they were on the showroom floor, I thought the XT looked like a futuristic prelude.

I forget what the Drag Coef. was for the XT, but I remember it was one of the most aerodynamic cars of those years!

Anybody ever heard of a twin turbo XT? This guy at work said his GF had an '87 XT10, that had a twin turbo 2.0L engine. I kinda just went along with what he was telling me and said, "Twin turbo XT eh? I'll have to look into that."

I think he's mistaken or confused. Any ideas?

Coefficient of Drag is 0.29 on the XT6 and XT. And it was THE most aerodynamic car out at the time, even more so than the exotics. ;)

Alright thanks, I'll be sure to tell him that. His parents might be shipping it to him from Montana, maybe I can get a look at it.
