So a header and a high flow cat equals $1000 of the full system cost?

I know you've probably posted it before, but do you have comparisons of the iON/Brullen headers to Borla (4th Gen) and MRT? (Overall gains one could expect to see)

My application would be a 98 Legacy GT 2.5 Sedan.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for putting another GB together!

Peace,
Oquipah

Oquipah - yes that's right, also included is a CEL eliminator just in case you need it. For your case you won't. Emperical test data has now been added as well.

Are prices any different for Canadian buyers? Could you please post prices in Canadian currency..I'm also in with you on a catback for a '00 RS.

I remember a while back that you said you were trying to get dyno numbers. I'm guessing that this never happened? If there is enough interest for the 2.5rs header back system I may be interested.

iON Performance Inc
09-26-2003, 01:15 PM
defjux - Canadian prices added above to include 7% GST. Note that all buyers in Canada will only have to pay GST and not their local PST.

Pogi22 - VOLTIS5 was suppose to get the dyno #'s, however he hasn't been able to test yet for some reason. In anycase, those results recorded are actual results felt on the road. There is a very measureable gain from the header-back system.

so Jack did you ever develop the turbo header for the EJ25? and if you did does it mate up to the factory location for people with aftermarket kits?

thanks

Hey iON. First of all, thanks for the pics, it helped make my decision easier... Second, do these come with gaskets and/or SS hardware? Oh and one more thing; what happens if no one else wants one? or if just one or 2 more people join (to make 3 or 4) instead of 5.. can we still get a deal? Thanks!

edit: one more thing. any way i can get sound clips of the different exhaust mufflers? quiet vs. meduim vs. loud? sorry if im asking for too much :D

I was just about to ask the exact same questions. I'm definitely interested in hearing the difference between quiet and medium. Loud would definitely not be keeping with my car's grocery getter image. Thanks.

Jay

EDIT: Am I also right that your headers don't end in the OEM location? I'd like headers but maintain my factory cat (to pass the rigorous inspection process here, not to mention it is a federal violation to replace your car's catalytic converter until it has over 50k miles on it). I might wait for headers/high flow cat until after 50k miles if that is the case.

I've got the dual tip 3 inch cat-less turbo-back quiet version with a resonator in place of the racepipe on my wrx sedan. IMO, it's not quiet, it's more medium (due to the catless setup). It isn't "droney" cruising on the highway with the windows closed, but it is easily noticible. Opening the windows definitely makes it more noticible but still is acceptable.

As for the cruising tone of the exhaust, think typical wrx sound but highly muffled deep tone, not ricey at all even with no cats. I definitely hear the turbine spooling even with the windows closed - love it  . When I go WOT, it becomes a bit less muffled and quite a bit louder but sounds great and not ricey like the RFL.

btw the Noise level is GF approved. :D

PHATsuby - Ben, the header was designed, however depending on tranny type if may or may not fit (auto tranny didn't as of yet). Going to see if it can be redesigned to fit both. Otherwise, results were quite promising ~10whp and ~15lb-ft gain with the header & no tuning on an AWD dyno.

SjYankee006 - Yes the appropriate gaskets are included for the cat-back. SS hardware is standard as well.

If there's only 2 or 2 people, then we can still probably work something out, perhaps 1/2 shipping or something.

Sound clips of the N/A stuff will be posted shortly, as well as for the WRX. Both of these are quiet acoustics, so that'll give you a "benchmark"

balyndraks - No the header system doesn't end @ the stock cat locations. This however may or maynot be an issue... you do know you can replace a damaged cat converter even if you don't have 50k miles ;) .. perhaps a little "off-road" excursion ;) The cat has been sniff tested to pass both Canadian & US Federal emissions standards, so just as long as you're not in Cali w/ a visual inspection you should be fine.

Rick Hunter - Thanks for the insight and commentary :)

I'm about a week away from the 90K scheduled maintenance, which will determine which set-up I'll be able to swing if any.
Although right now I'm leaning towards just the n/a cat back.

I also need to get some other things 'fixed' before splurging.

Is there a deadline for signing up?

Peace,

you guys wouldnt happen to be working with Techworks on the headers would you? because they just got dyno results back and are basically the same as what you stated and they tried to fit one on the auto as well(at my request;) ) maybe it is all coincidental

just wondering:) also what did you guys end up using for piping size on the test headers?

thanks

Anyone getting this in a turbo-back will not be disappointed the medium loud is one of the best sounding exhausts out there... I have the 4" single exhaust.

ps: Jack, I found the extra set of exhaust hangers that I thought I had sent back to you in my garage... I'll get them in the mail this week... sorry about the delay.

Hey iON, got a question and a suggestion here-

Is there gonna be lost a bit or gain of low-end torque with the 2.25" piping(how noticeable?)

Would you mind post this group buy on RS25.com? I think there are some more RS people there might be interested.

Thanks!

iON Performance Inc
10-10-2003, 12:45 AM
kasio - 2.25" = no loss in low-end torque. 2.5" there is some slight losses @ the low end. W/ the cat-back on your car, your engine will rev much more easily.

Unfortunately we can't directly post this GB on RS25.com as we're not a registered vendor there. Perhaps you may want to contact the admin for RS25.com and ask if you can link them here.

iON Performance Inc

au112 - yes the header system can be purchased separately, however you'll have to have your mid-pipe modified with the provided adaptor to work with the cat-back you have.

All the emperical results is on the 1st post of this thread. If you'd like, send us an email and we'll send you some pics as well.

Can you offer some guidance on how low the quiet, medium, and loud are relative to stock exhaust? Is quiet the same as stock, 10dB louder?, etc.

iON Performance Inc
10-14-2003, 12:12 AM
gsowrx - there's no "set" db's as the "loudness" also depends on what mods you have. Also, loudness is all relative depending on how sensitive your ears are to each frequency.

The video clip in the first post of this page is of the quiet acoustics cat-back from the outside.

From inside the cabin, the quiet is similar to stock, except much deeper. You won't hear it at cruising speeds, only when you step on it. Medium is more pronouced inside the cabin, slightly deeper then quiet. Loud is LOUD.

im interested in headers and a high flow cat for my 02 RS; it should bolt up to my stromung catback fine right? price? and is ceramic coating the header necessary?

whats the warranty on these parts as well; especially the cat section?

thanks!

iON Performance Inc
10-14-2003, 02:32 AM
Jejunum - the Stromung mid-pipe is too small to just "bolt-on" the header system. It requires your mid-pipe to be modified with the supplied adaptor to fit with your Stromung.

Ceramic coating is optional for the headers, it's an extra $200US for ceramic coating. You can wrap the headers if you'd like as well. We'd recommend having them ceramic coated just for extra corrosion protection as well as to hold more heat in. The price for the header system alone is $1000US shipped for the GB price.

The parts feature a limited lifetime warranty against manufacture's defects. The hi-flow cat itself will last at least as long as your stock cats used in the same conditions.

PHATsuby

Hey Jack, did you ever actually see the differences between the manual and auto RS's or other subarus? I mean TWE says their current header wont fit the autos and i dont doubt Keith but i would be curious to know what exactly is the difference, it cant be too much can it?, i will have to look the next time i get a chance .

so what you think? hahah

Ben

iON Performance Inc
10-14-2003, 11:44 AM
PHATsuby - the x-members are slightly different. The automatic tranny also has a tranny fluid pan on the bottom which results in an obstruction. You have to remember that the motor torques, and as such causes movement as well. Hence the transmission will play a part in fitment.

Hey guys, I checked the website but it appears to remain under construction. Do you have any pictures of the actual exhaust? I am not talking about the backside of cars but, perhaps, the pipes all laying out and/or some under body shots?

Thanks,

BTW: Clips sound great. Someone with one of these installed should do a quicktime of driving around with full video.

HerculesPeanut - yup we've got pics of the exhaust pieces laying on the ground (or not installed yet). But there were too many pics, which is the reason why we only posted the rear shots of how they'd look after the install (you're not generally going to look underneath the car anyways).

It wasn't really so I could just gaze at it. I wanted to get a sense of the design and construction.

Hercules, here's a pic for you. This isn't my car, but just a pic I found while doing an earlier search. It's not the full thing but maybe it'll help...

Hey iON, I know you said the cat-backs shipped; was mine included in those? Just curious because I didn't recieve a tracking #... thanks.

HerculesPeanut - we'll post some pics of the pieces for the WRX in a little bit... gotta get the camera all charged up ;)

SjYankee006 - That's a picture of the GC body style RS system ;) Not the same as the WRX.

Tracking #'s just got faxed in from FedEx today. :)

Hercules: Oops! I didn't realize you were looking for the WRX, but had I looked at your profile I would have known that. Oh well, glad that pic helps a bit anyways. :)

iON: Jack, you are the man. I promise I'll stop bothering you now. ;)

Anyone get thiers yet? Reviews, first impressions??

I got mine!... (http://www.ozinconn.com/steve/exhausts/140-4073_IMG.JPG) I'm installing it tomorrow afternoon, so I can't say anything about how it sounds. My first impression though, is that this thing is built SOLID. It looks and feels very well built, I can't wait to get this thing on!! One thing I'm not 100% sure about though, I only recieved one gasket. I assume this is for the mid-pipe to axle-back section... Should I get one for the cat to mid-pipe too? Or can I just reuse the one that's already there? I was looking at my stock exhaust tonight and everything under there looks fairly rusted. I soaked down all the bolts with Liquid Wrench and I'll do it again tomorrow morning before I start; hopefully they will come off without any trouble... I'll do a follow-up tomorrow sometime, wish me luck! :D

HerculesPeanut - There's alot of WRX owners out there who have our system :) There's a mini-review on the 1st page of the thread from a WRX owner.

SjYankee006 - Tip - lube up those hangers! ;) Also, get some hi-temp silicone like Permatex. Apply these to the flanges, as it'll help seat things in so that there are no leaks. Seals better then flat gaskets. Yes you reuse the cat->mid-pipe gasket.

Well! I finally got my cat-back installed and I love it! It's a little louder than I thought it would be for the quiet version, but its a great sound. It's not ricey at all, just a nice deep burble when I let off the throttle. At WOT my Cobb CAI drowns it out, though, so I guess it is pretty quiet; and during normal driving it's not really noticable until I do let off the gas. The only thing I don't like is the smell of the paint curing (it's only been on for a couple days), but I'm sure that will go away within a week or so. Here's a before and after pic (yes I know the tails are different, but I got those the day before my exhaust so I don't have any pics with the stockers, but you get the idea).

SjYankee006 - don't be smelling those fumes! The smell is from the oil used in mandrel bending, it's buring off. Generally takes about 1 good week of driving to burn it all off.

Hello every1! I've just got mine installed today. I was a little bit surprised that you guys didn't ship it in a box. Anyway, the exhaust is right there where I expect it of a premium exhaust system from the sound, the look, built quality, performance and yeah gotta luv the boxer sound! Can't wait for tomorrow for more excercise after the ECU reset, and hopefully taking some pictures. :alien:

Thanks for the deal iON/Brullen!
P.S-I think I lost the registration card if there is one. And is it neccessary to mail it in and get registered? If yes, could you mail another one to me or can I get it registerred online?

kasio - I'll see what we can do on getting you another warranty registration card. We generally keep track of all the original owners and if there are any issues the original owners can contact us directly.

Syck_Driven_STi- one of our dealers in Quebec installed our street spec turbo-back system (w/ the 3" hi-flow cat & quiet acoustics) onto a previously stock STi and raced it head to head with a bone stock STi. In 1st gear, the car equipped with the turbo-back was ahead by the length of the hood, by 3rd gear there was already 3 car lengths difference in position. In 4th, the car equipped with the exhaust was long gone. The two drivers that were testing this are both ex-rally drivers.
