View Full Version : What's easier and safer?
BAC5.2 09-26-2003, 07:25 AM I have a 95 Legacy sedan.
I might be able to get my hands on a 94 Legacy Turbo.
My question is this....
The donor car has 86k on the clock. My car has 130k on the ticker.
NOW, the real question:
Would it be easier to swap the turbo onto my motor, or would it be easier to swap the whole engine into my car?
I don't know what kind of abuse the 94 went through, nor do I know any of it's history.
I will be swapping the 5-speed over to my car.
Would I run into any problems with the turbo swap?
Would I run into ECU problems? I assume I would run into a problem with the manual tranny swap, perhaps a re-flash would take care of that AND the turbo swap?
What kind of boost is safe to be running as to not really compramise the durability of my engine?
Maybe I'll swap the turbo to my car, then keep the second engine "Just In Case" Keep the car for as long as possible, you know the drill.
legacy92ej22t 09-26-2003, 10:02 AM The whole engine! The ej22t is closed deck and built for boost. the ej22 is not. I highly recommened you swap the engine. I repeat, the ej22 is not built for boost. Many consider the ej22t to be the best motor ever put out by subaru. With upgradeds
( internalls, turbo, intercooler, injectors, fuel rails, proper fuel management ect..) the ej22t is capable of 500+ hp. IMHO forced induction on the ej22 is asking for problems.
BAC5.2 09-26-2003, 12:55 PM Thanks for the tip. I thought both engines were the same.
What kind of stock power is the EJ22t putting out?
What am I looking at to do a complete engine swap?
Money AND parts required.
I would imagine that my donor car will be a 94 Turbo Legacy. I want do to the swap simply because I like my bodystyle and interior much better.
Any info you can give me AT ALL would be great :)
Thanks man!
EJ22T 09-26-2003, 04:50 PM stock power for the ej22t is rediculously low, 160 hp, but... The motor is so detuned from the factory that with upgrades its a far better motor than the ej20t. Upgrades such as an intercooler raised boost, bigger turbo, better exhaust etc will easily get you to the 300 crank hp mark. the stock internals are forged, except for the pistons which are not cast nor forged, but are made by some special process (forget what its called) which places then in between cast and forged in terms of stregth. Crank bearings are shot-peened. and special oil injectors cool the bottom of the pistons . It is a fantastic platform to build up. With a standalone engine management system 500 hp is attainable. the motor is great but the only letdown are the gearbox's. Subaru 5mt gearboxes are knows as glassbox's, they are frigile and need to be pampered and with any excessive power they'll blow, If you want to make massive power I'd find an sti 6spd tranny and drop that in.
Mark,
ciper 09-26-2003, 04:59 PM Sell the 95 and keep the 94 with its turbo.
Either way, the 2.2 turbo engine is arguably one of the most desirable. They are way under powered from the factory so even high mileage cars are usually rock solid. The engine was seriously over engineered.
BAC5.2 09-26-2003, 05:58 PM If I can get a hold of a really good running condition 94, I will drive it for a bit and see if I want to do the swap or not. I REALLY like my bodystyle and interior, but keeping the 94 would just be SO much easier.
What are the body panel availability like? Would it be possible to bolt the body from a 95 onto the 94 platform? That would be really cool.
I need to buy the 94 turbo from someone who doesn't know what they have.
Exactly how rare are the 94 Turbo's in the 5-speed trim?
ciper 09-26-2003, 07:01 PM http://bbs.legacycentral.org Should answer most of your questions.
The only body parts that are specific to the turbo are the hood scoop and the rear wing. Other than that any 92-94 would provide any external parts and an 90-91 would have the other parts as well.
EJ22T 09-26-2003, 09:14 PM The only body parts that are specific to the turbo are the hood scoop and the rear wing
And the front bumper, we all know the turbo got a nicer front bumper
Mark,

for the swap to be done the right way you are going to spend about 6 grand.
i have about 4 into mine and its not running like my 92 did before it was totaled
subiekid 09-26-2003, 09:33 PM and you can put this sticker on it

BAC5.2 09-26-2003, 09:35 PM how do you figure 6k?
Hopefully I can get someone who has done this before to help me do the labor myself.
That way, the donor car would be the only MAJOR investment.
subiekid 09-26-2003, 09:36 PM mmmmm tastes like chicken

BAC5.2 09-26-2003, 09:38 PM Subiekid - Got any interior pictures?
If I really like the interior, I just might keep the 94 and build that up. I just really like my body a lot better. It depends on the shape of the donor car...
subiekid 09-26-2003, 09:40 PM and more:eek:

now that would require me to go outside and open up the parts car. its not nice, i have taken it all apart, had to take the seats out, half the dash....
ciper could post some pics for you.
i liked the 95 to 99 body style better as well, but now i like the older one more.
subiekid 09-26-2003, 09:48 PM found some

ooo I like that interior too.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to sell my 95 if I come across a 94 turbo 5-speed for around 4k or so...
I do like that interior, and it does ad to the sleeper effect of it all. What is the weight difference?
subiekid 09-26-2003, 10:22 PM no, you should tell me about it so i can go buy it. i have wanted another one for so long.:(
BAC5.2 09-27-2003, 07:55 PM I'll buy it, and then sell the carcass to you...
I'm taking the engine/transmission and the AWD system (if it will all carry over).
Mgardenier 09-28-2003, 10:37 AM That is my 1994 legacy ss that i just bought. what a change from our other car, a 1998 obs. my legacy just passed 82000miles, our obs 87000, Ill be posting more pics later. good luck with your purchase.

biggreen96 10-07-2003, 12:54 AM subiekid- i want to sell my GT now. seriously. I NEED a nice legacy turbo, return my ride to stock, sell it and wait around for 94 to go on sale. I dont see myself drivin very much for the next few years anyway. and im way sick of this fricken auto. All though it was nice to still be able to beat the boise crew with it:lol:
subiekid 10-07-2003, 01:59 AM dude, you were a week late.
there was a 91, pearl paint job, really rough, with 5 speed and 240k miles. it was at a mojo dealer in C town. i almost went and got it but when i went back to look again it was gone.
boise isthe place to find them. we have morehten anyone else. but hey, if i see one its up for me, then you. ahhahahah

that thing got much rust on it? you wana sell it?
biggreen96 10-07-2003, 03:05 AM theres a bunch of turbos up here too, seeing them all makes me soooo envious. my car, i bought it for 7500 I havent researched what they go for now though its got tons of mile for a 96 150k. 5500 sound to cheap for a GT?
If i do end up selling, all thats on the car now is whitelines and agx's, id keep the agx'x for the turbo. depending on the rates id keep the whitelines too, cause whatever car i get its gona be low and its gona be stiff. I love the gokart ride.
that defi pod is the sexiest thing i have ever seen, that was on my gauge wishlist. id leave the climate where it is and move the radio into the center console. or the roof liner.
Im in the brand new dorms up here, and im in the engineering hall, these dorms are plush, the old dorms are seriously projects  yeah if you come up here get into these new dorms, you have your own private room in a suite of 4-5 other peeps, we have a living room and kitchenette, theres a full scale kitchen on the ground floor, laundry room, lounge pool tables. plush.
subiekid 10-07-2003, 08:09 PM you should just go up to the people and ask them if they will sell it. that is what i do.
biggreen96 10-07-2003, 09:46 PM yeah i know just leave a post it! on thier window "hi, sell your car to me"
subiekid 10-07-2003, 11:49 PM exactly
biggreen96 10-08-2003, 02:31 AM ohhh its sooo tempting, I need some stock struts though, I tossed mine. You have any for sale?
have you ever been up here? if not come up check out the campus and get belig with me and my friends.
subiekid 10-08-2003, 03:42 AM i will have stock struts in a month or so. i have some gr2 struts in the shed along with my eibach springs. jared said he would help me install them.
biggreen96 10-08-2003, 04:14 AM well i dont wanna take your only replacements, what if you hit a rock doing 75 and destroy both passenger side struts, two rota tarmacs, and a side skirt. oh wait that was me :furious:
Mgardenier 10-08-2003, 08:25 AM Subie, there is no rust on my legacy, and only 4 small dings. paint is 100%, as is the interior. it has a brand new wrx clutch and tranny rebuild (by a dealer less than 3000 miles ago) and just had every seal and gasket in the engine replaced, as well asthe oil pump, timing belt, belt tensioner, etc. (also be a dealer). only down side of the car is the exhaust, the heat shields are loosening up and the back box is rusted (it is the original one so its ok) the abs light is on, but i hate abs anyway. it car is perfect as far as im concerned. It a true unicorn. the plans for the car are to install the agx's i own, I already installed my 99 rs rims, strut bars, and did a shortened shifter mod, and a k&n filter. Next big items are afm, oil pressure, and boost gauge (all being placed in a 3 hole pillar mount)mbc and saab intercooler and a new throttle cable (cause mine is stickie). I am washing her and waxing her this weekend (i hope) so ill post more pics. and last but not least, since she just rolled over 83000 miles, im not gonna be selling her for about another 100,000 miles or so. SORRY
happy motoring.

omg, when did you do that? i remember you had your 2 rear wheels forsale back in the day. i dont need whem, once i get my new ones on then i will just toss them.
did you ever find replacement side skirts? i still want a set. but cant find any:mad:
this is my 1001 post.
biggreen96 10-08-2003, 11:51 PM I did that about a year ago one night driving from here to there. I fixed up my side skirt the damage wasnt visable but it was hanging off the car when nail that rock. this is my 765 post:p

hey, would you mind a 91? i think that car dealer has that 91 again. its rough, but with some tlc ya could have a monster. i will take pics if its there tomorrow.
biggreen96 10-09-2003, 12:50 AM hmmm yeah snap a few, 5 speed right? i can do tlc:)
the struts would swap right?
subiekid 10-09-2003, 01:22 AM not sure about the struts, but you reminded me. i stil have the 92 turbo parts car. we can try to use those struts on your 96 so you can keep yours. do you jut need the front ones? i will takethem off tomorrow.
biggreen96 10-09-2003, 01:41 AM nope all four, i want to have a matched set, plus I cant remember if i even have the drivers side struts anymore. stashed deep in some storage garage.
subiekid 10-09-2003, 01:57 AM i will work on getting them off. ahahha storge. i know how that is. my dad gets pissed because i have parts all over the place. 2 extra sets of rims, strut bars, exhaust parts, lights. hahahah i got it all.

Why did you do that? Most consider the Legacy SS 5mt tranny better then the WRX 5mt tranny and the Legacy SS clutch is definitely better.
I could see it if you went with the STI 6mt tranny, clutch and flywheel. But the WRX items seem like a step backwards. Your car sounds very nice and don't take me wrong, i'm not dissing. I truly just am wondering what led you to the WRX parts?
:)
Mgardenier 10-10-2003, 06:14 AM The work was done by the previuos owner, not by me. the tranny was rebuilt with all legacy ss parts, but the clutch that was installed was for a wrx. so the tranny is all legacyy ss. i think the wrx clutch was used because a legacy ss clutch was not avaliable. I bought the car that way, it feels awesome so in the end i dont care :)
legacy92ej22t 10-10-2003, 10:29 PM Cool. I've heard others mention dealerships having trouble getting the SS clutch too. Primitive carries them. http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/catalog1.htm They aren't cheap but they're good clutches. Thought i'd post it for others.
:)
