For anyone who's been waiting around to get one of the new RS, TS, or OBS models, wait no longer. I called my local Subaru dealer last night and ordered a 2002 OBS. They said they'd be getting 3 automatics in March, but I wanted a specific option, so I won't get mine 'til April.

Here's what I ordered:
2002 Midnight Black Outback Sport
Automatic
Remote Keyless Entry

I sat in the two cars at the Detroit Auto Show, so I was certain I would fit (6'7"), plus I'd test driven a 2001 RS before.

I really didn't want a spoiler. Did I miss any other essential options? The only thing I feel is missing is the rear LSD, but I guess I'll live without.

Happily awaiting my new OBS,
Luke

how much is the factory tow hitch as an option? 'Cause depending on that, you'd be better off waiting a couple of months for the aftermarket to catch up on that. Usually doesn't take too long. A 2000 receiver hitch costs about $275-$300 installed and ready to tow (including light hook up and everything) for a '93-'01 Impreza from U-haul. If all you want is the receiver for your bike rack, just the receiver assembly mounted is about $225 for the '93-'01. I'm not exactly sure 'cause I didn't full price for mine 'cause I work for U-haul and did the install and everything myself. Usually a better deal than the factory/dealer option. Only problem I have is I don't have hangers on my cheapo Turbo muffler, so it bangs the hitch on bumpy roads. Plan on wleding some hangers on soon, though.

Hitch invoice, installed is $192--and you ought to be able to get all options at invoice. (MSRP is $295.) Not bad--and I'd rather have factory equipment bolted into the ready-made boltholes. Plus the Subaru one probably is hidden better than U-Haul.

Pix!!! I want to see different pictures of the car in various colours. The sample green on platinum looks yucky to me.

First, the color chart (OBS interior is upper right I think), then two version of Midnight Black.

The only other color I've seen on an OBS is green. I've seen silver on a WRX in person, and I'm sure it'd look nice on an OBS as well.

MSRP for the OBS is $18,695 for the manual, $19,495 for the auto. Just for reference, I'm paying $500 over invoice.

Hope this helps,
Luke

Cool. I am considering the same car/color--I am getting used to the idea of a bluish cast in the black. The options I would also consider:

* Tow hitch (for easily-removed rear bike rack)

* Center armrest extension/storage

* Cargo net

* Compass/autodimming mirror

* Upgraded stereo (similar speakers/tweeters/subwoofer to the 2001 optional package, I imagine--and I'd want cassette in addition to the stock CD)

Of course we don't know for sure yet what comes stock--so take these with a grain of salt. This is based on options info that has been floating around the Web. Cruise and foglights, for example, are standard on the OBS I assume.

Other OBS options appear to include rear diff protector, rubber floor mats, and painted mudflaps (?!?)

Nice pics...
The back door doesn't seem as long front to back, like they shortened it a little?

Yes, almost every car has smaller rear doors than front. Its usually due to the Wheel well.

the rear is for small ppl like cute lil girls . You know sometimes you get to pack in more than 1 girl. So the rear is good. It is a good deterant to big ppl. Yup. Thus the small rear doors. It's so light too. Smaller than my closer doors! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

the only option i could think of that you missed was the 5 speed manual http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif

Gambit: I thought those doors didn't look as long as the ones on my car. Means less bashing them in a small carport or confined space! Wow! More than 1 girl in the back? Assuming you already have one in the front? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
