It has a pump rating of 92 and usually is 10-15 cents cheaper than the name-brands. Anyone use it or reason not to?

Drewster,
While I haven't bought Costco I buy Sam's Club gas and haven't had any problems. They are the same type of store.

I heard it comes in 500 gallon drums and you must buy a six pack.

I have been using costco gas on my 2001 audi s4, no problems with it. The gas attendant said they do not put any special valve cleaners into the gas, but their pump filters get changed more than anyone elses, the signs on the pump say this also. You get very clean gas but no additives. I fill up at costco 4 times a month and Chevron or Texaco 2 times a month, just to clean the intake valves a little.

I use CostCo whenever I can. While you're there, just head inside the warehouse and pickup that 4-pack of Chevron Techron for cheap.

My car runs noticeably worse on costco gas (1-2mpg less, less "get-up-and-go"), but my wife's car (a NA 6cyl) works just fine with it.

I rock the costco gas whenever I can get it. The best is starting the fillup, running in for some free samples and then run back out and drive off .

I'm not crazy about Costco gas because the local one uses only one pump for their different grades. I'm kinda paranoid about the people ahead of me using 87 and having my gas slightly diluted.

There's a 76 close by that's as cheap or cheaper than Costco so I just fill up there. It's supposed to be MTBE-free although I don't see those banners and signs anymore.

i wouldnt use it. when my dads car was getting tuned by vish, it was pinging like crazy on costco gas so they had to detune it. a few gas tanks later of 76, and they could safetly bring it back up.

im usually not the kind of person who thinks cheap stuff is bad, but in the case of costco gas, im going to say try to avoid it

I say dont use it. It is generic gas. Would you fill up at an Arco or a Beacon, or a Safeway? I sure as hell wouldn't. The gas is not as high quality and will leave more deposits in you fuel system.

Actually, places like Costco, Kmart and Walmart all buy their gas from manufactures like BP-Amoco, Shell, Citgo and so on. It doesn't matter who. The retailers, Costco, etc... just buy it based on who sells it for the cheaper price. So one week you might be pumping at Costco and get Amoco or the next week get Shell gas. It doesn't matter. It's the same wherever you go.

What the last two posts said.

They all fill up at the docks, except possibly Shell?

I agree with the last two post. My dad was a truck driver and delivered gass all of his life, until last year. THey all buy the same gas. My dad worked at a palce where they buy fuel holesale from Shell. then they would sell that same gas to individual stations around town, Some to name a few. Big john, USA, Amerco, Beacon....
You get the point he said they are all the same gas.
The ones that really get exclusive are the top brands like Chevron..etc.
Just because of their proprietary blends.
Other than that, the big companys sell to smaller Wholesalers and distributors...etc.

The wholesalers get is from the same terminal where the gas is shipped to and all the individual gas retailers come to the dock and fill up from there.

I thought it might be interesting for you to know
which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and
which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell......................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco........ 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil.............. 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco..........................62,231,000 barrels

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who
hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel,
these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now
$90 - $100 a barrel

Here are some large companies that do not import
Middle Eastern oil:

Sunoco................0 barrels
Conoco................0 barrels
Sinclair...............0 barrels
B P/Phillips...........0 barrels
Hess.....................0 barrels
ARC0..................0 barrels

If you go to Sunoco.com (http://sunoco.com/), you will get a list of the
station locations near you.All of this information is available from the
Department of Energy and e ach is required to state
where they get their oil and how much they are
importing.

I used to always use ARCO gas because I had read somewhere that they only used Alaska oil,
but I have been running mostly Cosco gas lately. :(
Anyone know which refinery the SoCal Cosco gas is from?

Hate to tell you. I just looked up some info.

BP gets oil from Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Sunoco from Azerbaijan
Conoco from Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Hess has Venezuelan imports, no Middle Eastern listed.
Sinclair is all Canadian imports.
ARCO is not listed.

Link is here. Do the research. No matter where you buy, you're pretty much assured you are buying something that was imported from the Middle East.

In the Baltimore metro area, Costco, BJs, and Walmart gas comes from the BP terminal in Curtis Bay, MD. Furthermore, the Shell, Exxon, Texaco, etc. stations near me also get their gas from the same BP terminal.

If you are ever in the area, watch the trucks getting filled. Gas from the same hose is filling trucks with Texaco, Exxon, etc.

Same goes for home heating oil and diesel. Same terminal, just different trucks.

So in my area, you are paying for the name, but everyone is getting BP.

Yeah, but there's a big bakery in Eugene, but they make all types of breads/muffins/etc with different brand names. The bread is made per each company's specs. So...maybe gas is the same. One refinery puts more additive in some "brands" of gas than others..and different types of additives, at that. Chevron has "Techron" put in their gas, Shell has their additive, etc.

I haven't noticed problems with my Costco gas, but it might be a tad less "spritely" than with the pricier gases. Also may have something to do with our recent ethanol additions.

It really depends on the area you live in. For instance, in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area, most gas stations purchase gasoline from the Sunoco Eagle's point refinery. Sunoco has its own blend of gasoline and does put some detergents in its blend. Sunoco is a Top Tier retailer. In the Bay Area, I'm sure its a similar situation. Just pull up to costco and ask them who they purchase their gas from. Also, there is such a thing as Top Tier gasoline. I used to work for a French petrochemical conglomerate and did testing on deposit control for certain gasoline formulations. Some retailers' gas is simply better than others because they have higher quality additives. Here is a list of top tier:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Texaco
MFA Oil Co.
Conoco
Phillips 66
76
Entec Stations
Shell
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Kwik Trip / Kwik Star
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Co.
Turkey Hill Minit Markets
Mileage Stations
Chevron Canada
Shell Canada
Petro-Canada
Sunoco Canada

Try it for a half a tank or so and see if your car likes it. All cars are different.

I can say that i use costco gas alot without noticing any difference between other brands, that said i know that auto manufacturers have come up with a new standard for cleaners that is higher than the fed standards. Major brands such as chevron shell and 76 meet the standards.

The only time i notice an issue with gas hurting my cars performance is when i drive when i drive into the peoples republic of California. When i have to use their 91 octane "premium" i have problems with a hitch on accel until i clear the computers memory.
