View Full Version : how to wash a baseball cap
teaguespeed 10-19-2003, 09:56 PM So my goddam cat pissed on my favorite hat. How do you guys wash your hats? I have heard that the dishwasher works well, but how to go about this? Should i use dishwashing soap? And secondly, how would you kill a stupid ass cat. jk.
Soon2bSubbieowner 10-19-2003, 10:11 PM I used this thing i bought at lids, its a white frame that you put the hat in, and i put it in the dishwasher with normal everything (even some dishes) i did it once and it was perfect, tried it another time and it ruined my hat. dont know why. oh well. just go for it! if you dont have that plastic frame thing, then put your hat over a bowl to keep it out.
Avedis 10-19-2003, 10:20 PM I think dishwashing detergent might be too strong to use twice on a hat... I'm not sure I'd use it once. I might just use dishwashing soap on the hat and put it in the dishwasher with that (inside the washing thingy from lids).

SDscooby 10-19-2003, 10:43 PM I get pretty attached to baseball caps, so gotta wash em, can't just throw em when they get dirty. I usually just fill the sink with hot water and some tide and oxyclean. I let it soak for awhile, then I just scrub it with my hands. I don't know how well that will work for a hat with cat piss on it. I don't think I would put anything on my head that a cat pissed on, but I'm kinda a germ freak like that.... best of luck....
incorporeal 10-19-2003, 10:45 PM I say dont wash it, just wear it as is, you will attract all kinds of pussay.
FTW
andywrx 10-19-2003, 10:49 PM I've heard of using the 'cap holder', like someone else mentioned.
But if I were you, I'd just wash the back part of it, febreze it and try not
to get the brim real wet. Whenever I've had a hat washed, it
pretty much ruined the hat for me (I like the brim stiff/bent). So
just beware.
MrBlue 10-19-2003, 10:49 PM I'd toss that hat....
but if its that important to you go with the dishwasher method.... dont use too much dishwasher detergent it contains bleach and will fade your hat.
Also dont put liquid dish soap or laundry detergent in the dishwasher either.... I found that lesson out the hard way. I had a kitchen full of bubbles.
Run down to your local pet store and pick up some Nature's Miracle concentrate solution. It's designed specifically for getting out urine smells. Rinse the hat with warm water, pretreat the stains in Nature's Miracle, then let it sit for a while but don't let it dry out.
Fill the kitchen sink with hot water and Oxy Clean and let it soak. Once it's soaked for a while give it a good scrub and then a rinsedown. Repeat as necessary. I've been washing my hats this way for years regardless of whether or not one of my cats has pissed on it (which one of them has).

teaguespeed 10-19-2003, 10:54 PM yeah i might just toss it, but i will see what i can do first.
Dolphin Overton 10-20-2003, 12:36 AM i put it in the sink with laundry detergent and a little bit of rubbing alchohol. just hand wash it. the alchohol works pretty well. just washed one of mine 2 nights ago actually.
RATyson 10-20-2003, 01:39 AM I have washed my cap MANY times in the dishwasher with our normal dishwasher detergent, and it works fine for me. Sometimes there is a little soap residue left.. but the brushes off. I don't have one of those hat doohickeys either... I just put it in the top shelf by itself, and let-er-rip.
the cat... you could light it on fire... just make sure you do that OUTSIDE... you wouldn't want it running around catching the drapes on fire.
BlackBeastie 10-20-2003, 02:33 AM Cap washer thing works great

AC Lerok 10-20-2003, 10:51 AM i put mine in the washer in cold water on delicate with woolite.
washing them is the easy part, you need to be careful how you DRY them. i stuff the body with t-shirts to get it back into shape and then i let it sit for a while. be careful with the brims when they're wet, too. the plastic gets soft and you can snap it if you have a sharp crease or extreme curve to your brim.

I think you can actually buy them that way.. But I bet some sandpaper would do the trick.
But IMO, I think that is the goofiest looking crap... almost as goofy as wearing it sideways. Every time I see someone with their baseball cap on sideways, I just want to slap it off thier head. Should it really bother me that much?? prolly not...
DLC228 10-20-2003, 12:57 PM Yeah, sandpaper might work. Might be better for me to buy one already torn on the brim? That way don't have to risk screwing it up.
It must be fairly cool as I see ALOT of people wearing caps with the frayed brims.
MrBlue 10-20-2003, 01:10 PM my cap brim is frayed.... I've worn it almost everyday for 4 years.
Everyone tells me its time for a new hat but I just cant let go. Its broken in and fits my head perfect. Finding a good hat isn't easy.
wrigh003 10-20-2003, 01:50 PM Just throw it in the washer, just like any other article of clothing (I usually actually wash it -with- clothes). Let it go through the spin cycle to get it mostly dry, then put it on your head right after it comes out, to "remold" to your cranium.
If it dies in the process, it was time for a new one anyway.
Or you could hand wash it in the sink, with all that "gentle cleaning" crap.
It's a baseball cap, for crying out loud.
If the urine stench doesn't come out, see above comments about it being a baseball cap, and getting a new one.
SR20pwrd240 10-20-2003, 02:34 PM If the brim isnt cardboard jst toss it in the washer.

BacDoc 08-29-2005, 02:45 PM What's the hat? Team? Logo? and just put in on the top rack of the dish washer alone w/o dishes and wash on gentle cycle. Then let it air dry. I have a Cowboys hat I washed like that for 15 years!
JimmyXL 08-29-2005, 03:30 PM I know the dishwasher is a good idea but i don't want to do it that way. Can't i just wash it in a bucket with hot water and Soap, and just use hands to clean it? please help me out guys

I'm telling ya the dishwasher is the way to go. And if she doesn't want to do it smack her in the mouth!

I concur.
I just toss mine in w/ a load of laundry. Then take 'em out when it's clean and make sure to straighten the brim and pack a towel in 'em to air dry.
The only hat I ever jacked up was an AlpineStars hat that was a Flex-Fit... I stretched the elastic too much while it was drying and now it don't fit so good. The other 40 hats or so I've washed came out fine.
The key is absolutely making sure the hat's stretched over something so it keeps its shape while drying, or it'll shrink.

JimmyXL 08-29-2005, 04:48 PM I don't have the Cap cage. Is there any other cleaning methods?
Bizmark 08-29-2005, 05:07 PM A sure-fire way to clean that Mo-Fo is, fill the sink with cold water and add
2-3 cap full's of Woolite! let soak for a while then massage with your finger's.
Remove the cap and wash with more cold water. Let the hat dry and you're
good to go :D
I've been doing this for many year's and have not screwed-up a hat yet :disco:
JimmyXL 08-29-2005, 05:53 PM does it matter if i use hot or cold water to wash it with? what about rinse cold or hot?
