It's like the bridge of the Enterprise... they're so if you pump too much mad bass, the unit can explode in your face properly.

vaccum tubes were the old school transistors. they sound more organic, you get a fuller sound from them.

I know what a vacuum tube is, and what it does. I'm just wondering why in this age of solid state technology, would you want to use one. But I guess it's like the vinyl/cd debate eh?

Basically yeah.

Technically, vacuum tubes are truly analoge whereas more up to date technology is digital. Music snobs say they sound better (and they do in my opinion).

vacuum tube amps/pre-amps > all other amps/pre-amps

Here are some FACTS though:

Tube based output devices exhibit even order harmonics, while solid state output devices exhibit odd order, which sound very harsh to the human ear when clipping. Even order harmonics on the other hand are very pleasing to the ear, which give tube based output devices that "warm' quality all solid state device engineers strive for. As for power, a 20 watt tube amp will be comparable to a 150 watt solid state amp due to the extremely low levels of odd order harmonics found in tubes.

Actually vaccum tubes are better for video as well. The only downfall is that if you point them at a bright light source, you will burn an image into the tubes that will ruin the camera. When I went to art school, one of the guys did that. :D

Yeah, I guess it's like the argument with film/digital photography. Although digital photography is getting pretty damn close to reaching the resolution of film.
But I can understand that, I've taken digital circuit analysis before, and even made simple D/A converter, but we never mentioned tubes. I guess since it was a digital class, we stuck to that.

That's too bad because a Tube can have much greater bandwidth than a solid state device.

Right now yeah....but I say give it time, eventually it will. And I'm jsut saying that because that's the usualy order of things, a new technology comes up to replace an older one, but always starts out behind the curve. Eventually it's refined to the point it meets and succeeds the preveious one. But it's still suprising that we've come this far and still haven't surpassed that in tube capacity. One for the ages....

The again. You can run pretty low voltage through a solid state device and get great sound. You've got to run rather high voltage through a tube amp. DWR

This thing sounds baddass! The "depth" of the sound and the amount of effects you can stack up on this bad boy is incredible.
