Hey guys,

When we started the i Club back in May '99, we have never thought about how big we will grow in just a year. Number of members is growing and our website receives more and more hits everyday. That is very good. But, there is always that "but", we cannot keep our website on any regular webhost server due to it's very heavy traffic. On some days we get ~1Gig of data transfered. That is why I have been moving the site from place to place for the past 6 months. Finally, I found our site a good home. Our fellow member and 1/3 of the i Club creators, Nick Catalfamo, aka NickCat, was nice ebough to offer to host the site on his server and T1 connection. That was working out fine until we hit a point break. Nick's server could no longer handle all the traffic and hundereds of simultaneous hits. So, we are trying to buy a server that will provide a nice and comfy home for our website and monstorious message board.

What I am asking from you guys, is if you can, donate some money towards the purchase of the server. We will all benefit from that. With 1500 members, we will be able to come with a good chunk of money that will allow us to buy a good server and maybe some other things needed to run a perfect website.

If you can donate some money, e-mail me at XXX and put DONATIONS in the subject line. I will give you the address to send your donations to. Any amount is welcome.

People who will donate $ to us, will receive a special i Club sticker when they come out.

Thanks a lot,

Alex "Imprezer" Shikh

P.S. You can post here yelling "I am in for $x" or anything like that. <IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif" border=0>

THANKS A LOT, FRIENDS!!!

I'm in for $10. This site has saved me money on mods and helped me make the right ones. Although, if it wasn't for this site I probably never would've bought my RS. I'd still be happily plodding along in a 2.2l Legacy. Damn you Alex, you cost me $22000 and counting http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif.
I think dave might be on to something. Personally I don't want any stickers on my car but maybe I'd put it on the fairing for my Thule rack.

Mr. Imprezident,

I spend $15 on a single movie and popcorn, and usually don't get as much entertainment and education value as I do in my hours (uhh, make that days http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif) of free time on this board. So just let me know where to send the check. I'd love to have an i-Club sticker, too.

Hey Guys/Gals,

I am really pleased to see such a positive response from our request for help.

For those who asked a few technical questions... the operating system that we are going to go with is Linux, it's by far the most stable and reliable of the server OSs. Machine... well that's up to the amount of money we receive. I want to get a beast however. The more money the better the server we get.

Just to give you guys who are familiar with linux an idea of how hard we were getting hit yesterday... the load average was at a sustained 200+ for 2 hours. Until it finally peaked over 300 and the server just couldn't handle it anymore and I had to reboot.

You guys are hammering the site... which is great... and what I am sure Alex, Robert, and myself were hoping to happen one day... but I think we just grew so fast that we weren't expecting such a large machine upgrade so soon.

Please be generous in your donations... I know for how much we all use this site and the valuable information, not to mention the fellow Subaru nut compantionship, a little scraped together cash shouldn't be to hard to come by.

Thanks again... and I will keep you all updated as to what's happening with the server.

Currently today, I am borrowing, from a really good friend, another machine to handle the load until we get our permanent server in place. Which I hope is quickly.

Later

PS For those looking for stickers and t's, I will tell you Alex has no intention of making money off this board. He wants to put ALL the money back into the site and club. So if we get enough, I guarentee you Alex and Robert will more likely get stickers and t's made up. The immediate need is to get a server and a place to put it. I have had many talks with Alex about this, and I he has great ideas for this site. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew that. -j

Server Info Update!

Ok... well as I am sure you all noticed we were down for a little while this morning... we switched over to the temp box (P3 500) (and I STRESS TEMP!!!) this should keep us up and running until we get all the money for the new server together.

Ok... I am narrowing down the box I am looking at... right now it's looking to cost about $4K. The box is from VALinix and is going to be a dual Pentium3 600. It will have enough harddrive space to last us for a while... and it's fully expandable to grow as the club gains more members.

Now simple math tells us we need $4000, and with most people donating about $20, we will need 200 members to hit this mark. Now this doesn't mean this is the machine we have to get... there is much room for improvement like more memory or better processors, so the more money you guys send the better box we will end up with.

Don't want to start a flame or get this thread going in a different direction, but as a web application developer, I have to say something. You said that Linux is the way you want to go, but I'd have to put my vote in for Win2K. I have developed some high-end database-driven web applications that run on machines with dual 500s (or better) running Windows (anywhere from 512MB RAM and up). One of the applications handles several hundred concurrent users all day everyday and we never have any problems. I will admit, if you are on a box close to the minimum requirements for Windows, you will see problems, but as long as you have a sufficient machine, things run great.

Again, hoping this doesn't start a flame or anything; just needed to stick up for Microsoft as they have made my career much more fun.

PS: Worked on UNIX boxes for over 3 years before I ever worked on Windows, so I'm not just saying this because I only know Windows.

Also, my check for the $25 I committed to earlier is in the mail.

People can pay with their VISA card, possibly meaning bigger donations than if using cash (except mine is a debit card), and each time you withdraw money from your account with them, you can get a direct deposit of funds from them into your checking account with a couple of days.

Not to be a "Capitalist Bastard" but . . .

since there are so many people hitting this site . . .the i-club could sell some space on the Home Page to retailers of Subaru Related products or Subaru itself. I understand it's a non-profit organization but the money from advertising could b used to pay for stuff like a Club Server and other supporting net equipment. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple banners if they related to Subaru stuff like upcoming products, sales on aftermarket parts or whatever. Just something to think about.

I am sending the money via paypal now, using Imprezer @ home.com (remove spaces in email to make it work). It will also ask for his last name "Shikhmuradov".

ADDENDUM: As we all send money to paypal, his account balance with them will keep going up and up and up, until he decides to withdraw the funds. He can log on and keep track of the balance like a savings account, and then get the money out by having them send a personal check or direct deposit to his checking account.

You can use my email as the referal person "larryganz @ hotmail.com" and remove the spaces to make it work.

jhuang76 - thanks for using me as the referal, when I donated the $20 to Imprezer they only charged my credit card $15!

Instructions to others: It is simpler than this sounds. I use it for eBay, as well as using iEscrow.com if I am selling a valuable item (with bidpay.com you can send a western union money order, but it isn't free)

First you visit the paypal.com web site and click on the "signup" link near the top right of the screen. Follow the instructions, and you will soon be ready to send money via your credit card (or you can mail them a check and they will credit your account so you can send money later by withdrawing it from you account).

Once you sign up, they will send you a confirmation email with a link to click onto, that will activate your account. You must do that to verify your email is correct or you cant send or receive money yet. Once your email address is confirmed you will be able to send up to $500, and withdraw funds up to $500.

They will also snail mail you a confirmation code that will prove your street address is also correct. When the letter arrives in the mailbox in about 2 weeks, you will "log on" to your account and go to "My Account" and the "overview" submenu, then click on confirm street address, and enter the code and click on "okay/submit" button. Once that is done, you can withdraw ALL the funds people send you when you account balance is over $500. Obviously, they don't want to mail large checks without confirming the mailing address.

Then, when you want to send money to someone, go to paypal.com and login, by clicking the "login" button on the top right of the screen. Your ID is your email address, and your password is one you chose when you signed up.

The click on the Tab/link to send money. The next screen will ask for the email address of whomever you are sending to (they don't have to be a member, but will need to sign up to withdraw the funds).

It will also want the dollar amount in "dollars.cents" (i.e. 20.00) without dollar sign, then the recipient's last name, and any message you want to send to the recipient.

When you click send, it will first try to use any money left in your paypal account from money people have sent you previousl (or from checks you deposited with them), and then they will charge the credit card for the remainder of the balance of what you sent.

Obviously you want a very secure password, and they do use secure servers. If people can figure out your password, they then have access to your credit card! This company seems to be very reliable, and makes their money by holding other peoples money in what is essentially a "non-interest bearing debit card account".

Occasionally they slow down like tonight. Everyone is at home buying stuff on eBay...

I just really wanted to thank everyone who has donated money so far... I am really not surprised, but more shocked at the outpouring of support here... makes me pretty happy and definitly justifies all the sleepless nights, not to mention rude awakenings in the middle of the night, to make sure the server was ok and the board wasn't down.

Funny part is... whenver there was a hiccup in the board alex would usually send me an ICQ... and about 95% of the time I was already on it! Just hope nobody else ever noticed! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

But please folks... don't stop... we are still well shy of our goal... we need at least 200 members total to donate about $20 a piece to hit our mark for the $4000 server. Please be as generous as you can and I know I speak for Alex, Robert and myself when I say... THANK YOU!!!

If you get $5 when some one refers you, then if person A sends $5 and refers person B, person B can send $5 and refer person C. Person C can send $5 and refer person D and person D can send $5 and refer person A. Hence, $0 is spent, but $20 is given total.

What do you guys think? Does that work out?

I also have noticed that not may other businesses are posting to this message. If you are a business that post things for sale on this message board it is only right to support it when it needs it the most. So I challenge any business that post on this site to match or beat my donation.

Not sure what the total is yet... haven't had a chance to count... (or talked with alex in a day or so) not to be a Pessimist, but I am pretty sure we are not at our goal yet.

The only thing I was a tad dissapointed to see was that Dale's challenge wasn't picked up by any of the companies here. It's a little disheartening to see the companies that make there money from us not willing to turn around and help pay the 'bills' for all the free advertising they get here. Oh well... maybe this guilt trip will work!

Later,
Nick

P.S. Depending on what the final $$$ count is, I might be getting in contact with a few people who were offering a sales outlet for the equipment.

I know this was already addressed, but you guys can make a $10 donation that costs nothing and only needs about 10 minutes of your time.

Through paypal you can give $10 for free. If you sign up for paypal and use alex's e-mail (imprezer@home.com) as a referral he will get $5. The other $5 is a bonus you get from signing up with paypal and is yours to spend anyway you want. (but we would hope you send it to alex) I did it this morning and took about 7 minutes from start to finish. BTW... to send the $5 to alex... use the same e-mail address as above and his last name is Shikhmuradov.

The only thing paypal needs is a credit card for authorization of the account. Course IMHO paypal seems like a pretty cool way to send money regardless... I know it means if I need to send alex any money for parts I don't need to get anymore money orders or worry about it taking to long in the mail.

So please, if you can't give any money (or already sent a check and can spare some time to do this) please sign on to https://secure.paypal.com/refer/pal=imprezer%40home.com and sign up today... it's free!

-Nick

This sucks...paypal is only available to US residents...sorry Alex, but this means that I'm going to have to mail you a money order for those $20US that I promised you...I'll try to get it tomorrow but you might have to wait a little...but don't worry I will send it to you http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

On another note...

http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/frown.gif I'm disapointed as well that no other vendors have stepped up to meet Dale's challenge, I think that was a very honourable thing for him to do, not necessarily to issue the challenge but to realize the impact that this board has had on his business and to help support it...I think that maybe the club might have to revise it's policy about the advertisement that takes place in here... but that's just my oppinion.

Cheers everyone!!!

Mr. Imprezident, http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif will you be putting up a list of the checks and paypal payments you have received so far?

Yeah how's it going so far?

Been away for a couple of weeks http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif and lost touch

Glad to see that you got my cheque.

Hey maybe we should have a new member category of Subie Subscriber for those that donate.

Ok guys... reviving this thread cause we need a little more money. Right now we have a grand total of $2141 USD. However the server we are looking at is about $2500. I know we have had a bunch of new members log on since this post was first made and was wondering if we can catch up with a few of the people who couldn't donate at the time as well as new people who never seen this thread.

Again the easiest thing to do is to sign up with PayPay.com, refer Imprezer, and send the free $5 you get for signing on to him, as well as any other money you might be able to spare. That way even if you can't donate any money you have contributed $10 dollars for just a little bit of your time.

Please do this... we are in the home stretch for the server... and I want to get this all taken care of as soon as possible.

Thanks again to all of you who have helped out so far, we really really really do appreciate the help and the great response... I know it gives myself (and I am sure Imprezer and Robert) that warm fuzzy feeling know that all the time and effort we have put into this website hasn't gone unappreciated.

Regarding the paypal instrucations refer to the post earlier in this thread.

Sincerely
-Nick Catalfamo

Whatever happened to that guy offering to host the i-club on his company's server? Now that was a deal I can't imagine ANYONE passing up. Don't tell me we did... did we?

Nick
06-11-2000, 02:59 PM
Overtime... to answer your question we did. At this stage of the i-Club development having our own server is still the better option. We have already made up our minds in this matter. We have decided to get a server and we're sticking to our guns.

However, if we get soo damn big that we need that kind of setup then I will gladdly, and happily, take up the offer, as long as it's still open. But for now, we are going with our own server. Not to be rude, but please don't argue this point, it's not up for debate.

Have some faith in Alex, Robert, and myself, we haven't steered you guys wrong yet. have we?

I have to agree with Nick and Alex, What happends to the club if somebody something happends to the company that hosts the website. Then we can lose the page and they might take the proprietary rights to the page since it is on there server. Then we are left out cold. I'd hate to see that happend. What would I do at work all day? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif Anyways, Nick and Alex, I'll send in some more money.

I read back through this post to find important paypal.com info that Larry Ganz so thoughtfully provided. To make your donation go further (paypal gives a $5 referral fee to Imprezer), in the "Person who referred you" field, enter:

Imprezer @ home.com (remove spaces in email to make it work). When prompted, enter Alex's last name, "Shikhmuradov" (remove the quotes). More detail is on page 3 of this thread; use your browser's Find to search for "larryganz".

Here's another way to look at making a donation of, say, $20. A 1-year subscription to Sport Compact Car is $20, right? Do you get $20 of value from SCC? Probably, even though not every issue is about the beloved RS. Do you get $20 of value from this board? After you answer that, click here (https://secure.paypal.com/refer/pal=Imprezer%40home.com).

Oh, and my $20 + $5 referral is en route.

miksmi,

Thanks for clarifying the way to donate. I cannot edit my old message from "larryganz" on page 3, since I never got a new password when I changed my email address. So I just took a new ID insead.

At this point, any referal money I have gotten has now been turned over to Imprezer. But, we should use him as the referal source as you stated, not using me as the referal as in my old message.

Hmm... this had already come and gone before my time, but since I'm sitting here browsing the i-Club sipping my 2nd pint of Guinness and feeling somewhat warm and fuzzy, I think I'll do two or three things.

1. Post to this thread so that it pops back to the top.

2. Send a donation to help out the club.

3. Request an update on the new server (as well as the new site) from the Imprezadents.

So, how's it going?

Just an idea for Imprezident,Why dont you charge a membership fee and set a fee for vendors to make revenues? This would make you a profit org. but would take care of expenses to operate your website.

I Second JC's Idea.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to register vendors and give them a special designation (instead of scooby newbie or scooby specialist). They could also have a brief listing (contact info, short company description, and web link) in the Aftermarket section. I know this is more work for you, but I think it'd pay off in the long run.

RE: The for-profit/non-profit designation. You could list recommended donations rather then charge fees. If anybody cheaped out on you, we could guilt them to death on the board. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

Just my $0.02,
