I'm looking at possibly importing a used OBS/STi converion from the US, but Canada customs asks for the origin of manufacture for the car.

Was a 1998 OBS built in the US (is there a US plant?) or in Japan?

All Imprezas are built in Gunma, Japan.

Is that true on the 6.1%? I know new cars get that when coming from Japan, but it was already imported to the US. We are supposed to have free trade with the US, so something already there should not get dinged again. It already paid duty to the US.
You want to double check that.

it says we get free trade on cars MANUFACTURED in the US/CAN/MEXICO, but if the Impreza was manufactured in Japan, we dont get the free trade (this is what I gathered from the Canada customs website...I may have misunderstood).

So regardless if you buy it from the US, if it wasnt made there, you're screwed :(

Goosie,

Are you talking about Trents car? If so the chasis was made in Japan,as was the motor. But it was assembled by LaChute in Canada. Perhaps its a loophole for you.

can't you just tell them that you are buying a body and the engine seperately and then assemblying the two parts on your own. so it would technically be assembled in Canada.

i know back in the day the japanese pickups would ship to the us with everything but the bed and they would just assemble the bed on US soil so there was no foreign car commission to pay.
