View Full Version : How are power antennas extended/retracted?

I'll need to use one or two junkyard power antennas for a random project (basically using them as actuators, nothing to do with radio) and I need to know how they work.

Do they extend to and stay at full height whenever there is 12v supplied and retract when 12v is removed (would require a 12v signal and a 12v power lead) or do you apply +12v to extent it, cut voltage when extended then supply -12v to retract it?

Either way wouldn't be a problem for me but I'd like to know before I start this little project.

Nevermind, 5 minutes with Google confirms it's the three wire configuration with a signal, pos. and neg. wires. I guess I should've realized that from installing an aftermarket radio years back... :o

Surprised how expensive they are too. Hope the U-Pick-It yard isn't picked clean.
