I'm currently looking for a boost gauge and have come to wonder, why isn't there some all-inclusive digital meter readout device that controls all of our gauge-reading needs? Isn't there something out there that would allow me to selectively switch or at once see my boost, EGT, air/fuel, oil information. I'm wanting to keep my interior as clean as possible. With all of the technology available, you'd think there'd be a company that sold something similar to what I'm talking about. Anyone else dream up this device?

the psi-3 gauge is pretty comprehensive... a bit spendy, though.

I have thought about that issue quite a bit. An “ Info Center” with total information. Some high end luxury cars come close. I guess part of the answer is in drivability. It may be better to have a few key gauges that are used constantly than a lot of information which is only used occasionally. Pilots are generally overwhelmed with information.
I use a red digital gauge which gives me speed and tach reading without looking down. Digital, because it easier to process then analog, and in my line of sight so my eyes do not need to refocus. Boost, oil pressure etc are of secondary importance to my style of driving. But each of us has their own priority.

I actually am a pilot in the Air Force and I definitely know what it means to be overwhelmed with gauges. Boost, Speed, and Tach are of my primary concern when driving with a secondary glance at oil, air/fuel, egt every once in a while. Thus, if there were a way to stick the secondary three into one gauge or digital readout, that would be best for me. I'm looking to get a column-mounted boost gauge. What is the device that gives you a digital view of speed/tach?

Here is what I did to get more of an HUD sort of thing.

BTW in the old days I loaded nukes onto to those aircraft.
But those where still tri-planes. lol

I saw a display once on a LCD monitor that had all that information, I think there is a software program that works with an in dash computer to display whatever you want. The one I saw was displaying someone's personal skin with analog needles for boost, a/f, temp, amps, rpm's, alot of stuff, anyone else see this?

So what options do you have to just have a laptop up to your OBDII port under the steering wheel? Can you derive any data from that?

It is indeed awesome but i would have a question about how usable it is. It seems that in that position it would be diffcult to see when driving. The ambient lighting in the subaru in that area during the day even makes a clock hard to see. It is pretty cool though.

doesn't the Defi-link system have a small digital display type thing?

Yeah, this (http://www.defi-shop.com/product/dl/dp/dp_top.htm) is the defi-link display thingey
http://www.defi-shop.com/product/dl/dp/images/top_display.jpg

pretty cool. I also hate tons of gauges, so I've got a HUD boost guage (defi) for the only thing I want to be able to moniter while driving hard, and for the rest either going to go with the defi link, or the S.E.C.S. (http://www.defi-shop.com/product/dl/dp/images/top_display.jpg) unit.

'spensive, though!

yeah I'm sure you can put the screen anywhere you want, like a sun visor, maybe even transfer through a projector onto the windshield!!

Yes those look nice and would seem to be useful. However i posted a pic somewhere on here with the it installed. It has a green backlight that looks weak to me, and again, I think it would be impossible to see in a din pocket.

Well, here's something else to keep in mind: http://www.cobbtuning.com/images/aport1s.jpg
(note: prototype image, final results may differ)
It's the Cobb Tuning Accessport, due to be released in Feb. It's primary function is to allow map switching and ECU flashing by the user with no need to pull out your ECU and mail it to Utah, but it will also function as your basic OBD-II reader.
info here (http://www.wrxforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000017)

It can pull and clear CEL's as well, and it looks as though there will be datalogging capabilites as well:

"Datalogging software is in testing. It may or may not be ready by the time the AccessPORT is released but it will follow shortly after." (trey cobb)

Pretty much anything the ECU has to say can theoretically be displayed on the Aport, like boost, speed, rpm, O2 readings, EGT value, etc.. it remains to be seen what it actually ends up being capable of.

All I can say is, "WOW." I'm really glad I started this forum before I went out buying a ton of gauges.

that laptop thing is very easy to make

i was talking to my dads programmer/machine code guy and he said that all those gauges are are active-x images that can be modified by a converter that accepts analog signals, so you just put senders on everything, write the code, and hook it all up

he told me if i supplied the hardware, around 400 bucks, hed write the code, but then that way i could have the gauges look ANY way i wanted, and they could like beep or show up if one went into a dangerous amount of pressure etc

kinda a cool thing to think about

I know Omori makes a Boost/EGT gauge in one package. Anyone know where to get one cheap?
