View Full Version : WRX turbo upgrade:What guages are needed?

I don't want to spend a fortune on guages (I already am on the turbo upgrade!!), I just want the guages that are really necessary to ensure safety of a modded car. I already have a boost guage. I have been told I really should have EGT and Fuel pressure guages, but depending on who I talk to the list seems to go on and on. Some opinions from experience would really be welcome. Thanks a lot!

Boost, which you have already. EGT is pretty much a must. If you wanted a third I would go with oil pressure. This thread will open up a flood of opinions and replys. Buy good, reliable gauges and you won't go wrong. Good Luck. John

Thanks John:) . It seems pretty clear I will have to get an EGT guage and probe. As far as wanting a third, like I said, I only want what is necessary. I really appreciate and value your opinion, and I'm not against spending money on what is required. If having an oil pressure guage is generally viewed as necessary to ensure the safety of my engine then I'm all for it.
My boost guage is an Auto Meter Phantom series, so I will probably stick with those. Thanks again...

If, in the unfortunate event of a massive drop in oil pressure, you would like to wait until it reaches the perilously low level of 2 or 3 psi to be notified by the idiot light on the cluster, skip the oil pressure gauge.

On the other hand, if you would like to be tipped off well in advance so you have time to shut the car off before potentially inflicting catastrophic damage to the engine, get the gauge. :)

(my stance on this is somewhat obvious  )

Another vote for boost, EGT, and then oil.

OK, thanks guys.
Joel - I like the logic:cool:

If I need to use a wideband O2 sensor to properly tune the engine, why is it still important to have an EGT guage?
and
Wouldn't it be important to have a fuel pressure guage, seeing as if anything happened to the fuel delivery, like the fuel pump dying, the engine could potentially blow up?

Any thoughts?

Kinda redundant though.
You should be monitoring your oil levels anyway. Yes I know the level isnt what the gauge watches. But here is the thing. If you have your oil topped off, (which it would be if you are checking it regularly) and you get a massive pressure drop, the damage is done. Gauge or no gauge, only a few things are going to cause a oil pressure drop and they pretty much all mean its shortblock time.
Besides EVERY engine failure in a WRX that I have seen/heard about has been from blown cylinders from det/heat (from lean conditions) none have been from oil, pressure drop .
That said, get an oil pressure gauge anyway. Its good to be monitoring thse things. I dont have one yet for the above reasons, but I will soon enough :)

basically what I am saying is you wont have a big pressure drop without damage to begin with.

I have Omori gauges installed in my wrx. They are sweet, and they look stock. Much like the Greddy gauges, but wayyyyy cheaper. Havent had a problem at all..I have had em on the car for a good 3-4 months now...maybe longer  ...i have oil press. and egt....my boost gauge is in my digital sbc-id :disco:

Oil pressure gauge or oil temp? Which one?

I figure, the idiot light does the job for pressure (okay, maybe a bad job), but oil temp would help if pressure got low, too, and warn about other conditions. No?

Cheers,

Boost, EGT, and a clock if anyone makes one that'll fit the pod! Can't stand not knowing what time it is! The GReddy gauges with the warning light are good for EGT and boost.. you'll know when you're overboosting (up hills and stuff) and you'll know when you're exhaust is getting too hot (up hills and stuff, too).

Unless the oil pressure gauge has a warning light or buzzer, you probably won't notice it.

Like most of us, the only time we check our gauges is when we're beating on the car.. when we go WOT and wanna watch that needle registering gobs of axle twisting boost.

The factory idiot light only goes on when oil pressure is almost 0?
