Reason Im asking about age is that Im 18. I just started college and as of now I drive a 94 Civic (automatic :furious: ), but I REALLY want a WRX. Everyone is telling me to wait until I graduate since it seems as if Im gonna have to pay for it myself. And after reading the forums, I see some people saying they're "in their 30s", and they "have families of their own".

Ive been studying/researching the WRX for months now, lurking on these forums learning all I can before I actually buy one. (Ive even picked out all my mods already  ).

I keep getting the feeling that by the time I buy one, the WRX wont be a big deal and almost everyone will have one. (I live south of Atlanta, GA and Ive seen about 7 in the last 7 months in this area, and have never rode in one or test drove one [cant drive stick yet :( ]) Im hoping that ALL you people cant be around my age and it will make me feel a lot better if I see that most the people here are at least my age and waaay older :p

How old are YOU?

I'm 22 (got my WRX when I was 21). Until you start making a bit more money though, I would wait too. Trust me, man, get a cool used car (like a 240sx or Integra or just keep your Civic). You'll love having a cool car, but regret it when you're working all the time instead of partying with your college friends. Think about how much alcohol a $400/mo payment will buy you if you're not tied to a car loan!

Plus, if you're living on campus your car is exposed to a lot of elements (drunk college kids, rain, ice, etc). I'd let my Civic sit out there and get to beat to piss by everything and hook up my nice ride when I get out of school. Besides, your priorities may have changed by then, and you'll be glad you weren't held down by a car loan.

im 20, soon to be 21... possibly buying an STi in the spring...

it really doesnt matter how old you are, its more about how much money you make/have/ are willing to spend on monthly payments... I bought my RS when I was 19, should have bought the WRX then but i decided the RS was a better deal. I saved about 200$ a month with my decision to buy the RS over the rex.

Wait till your out of school.........

Im 24, got a good job out of school, bought an STI instead of the WRX I wanted 2 years ago while still in school.
I drove a 2.5rs automatic for 3 years (of the 4 years at college in Upstate NY). My Bronco blew the hell up after freshman year.

You could still use some driving experience at that age in a car a little less potent than a rex.

Mod your civic a little or get a used/cheap RS, just to keep you happy till you graduate. then the fun begins......you won't even blink and college will be over. Take my word for it. I had the same dilemma. Save yo dough! You will thank me in 4 years.

Have some freakin fun at school, don't worry about working and car payments, you have the rest of your life for that (god knows I'm in the beginning of this part of my life now)......I know what the "getting a new car" urge feels like, you gotta be tough.

23 when I got it - waited a year after college, had to move out and get settled first, and then saved up a downpayment and waited for the STi to be released. Just turned 24 last month.

i'm 24 and agree with everyone else. college isn't the time to worry about your car ($$, mods, parking, repairing, etc) I had a 95 integra for those four years and left it at home. drove it in the summers and the past year i was working then i got a wrx. if it was anything other than a honda i would have avoided the depreciation hit and sold it

12-02-2003, 02:22 PM
Input from someone waaaaay older, I would first buy another mid 90's Civic with a five speed. Learn how to drive a straight shift for a year or so (rip up the clutch on it) and then sell it. Then get your WRX. You may even have enough change to buy a STI.

I just turned 21 and I bought a 2000 RS a couple months ago and couldn't be happier. The payments aren't nearly as much as a new WRX plus I think it looks better too. I think alamike has some good advice, but I also think an older RS might be right up your alley. It's plenty fast and you can still save up for a WRX later. ;)

Try this to see if you can manage the "payments + college" lifestyle:

Instead of running out and buying the car, figure out what you would be making in payments if you were to buy a wrx today.

If you can comfortably save this amount every month for at least 6 months, you are probably stable enough to handle car payments in college.

I'm 25, almost 26 and I bought mine last fall when I was 24 and had been working full time in my field for a year and a half.

I'm glad I waited until after school. I didn't have to worry about car payments as an undergrad, and I was able to put a nice downpayment on my WRX and after only a year I'm already halfway to paying it off. Having a wife with a similar income helps, but we are also paying way too much on the car she just 'had to have' when she was in college.

27 with a wife who makes almost as much as I do. I am very thankful that I didn't have to make car payments in college because I wouldn't be able to afford a house now. Trust me on this one--go cheap in college. College fun can often be directly proportional to the amount of money you have available. Several hundred extra a month toward a car means you have several hundred less a month towards trips, activities, stuff, and savings.

20, I bought my RS this summer but I have been saving for about 4 years and paid cash for it, I would not take a loan out since I didnt want to be in debt which is why I got an RS as opposed to a WRX.

29 bought my WRX in Sept, previously I spent 5 years in the military and ran up some debt  so I spent some time getting that under control before finally buying my ride, although I did buy my old L wagon in March of last year.

Save your money and have some fun but try and stay out of debt aka don't use them credit cards to much. If I hadn't done that I might've gotten an STI instead but I'm more then happy with the WRX. I'll get an STI in several years after I buy a house or something.

19, got my rs for my graduation when i was 18, i had to pay tax right off and have to pay another 2g's after that, but it seems worth it

i would wait if i were u, i have to drop like 10g's in a year on my car and its starting to get stressful w/ all my other bills, <cell phone, activities, snowboarding> you catch my drift

i know you want it bad, but get an rs, ull figure out more about scoobs and wanna get it even more, once you realize theyre spendy :)

27, got my car with my first job out of school. I worked in college, too, but that went to support the cycling habit. wait. By the time you're out, there'll be a car you want that you can afford.

Edit: If you must, find a used old skool RS with a stick and learn on it. You can mod it a bit if you want as you go, and you won't be out much. Best of all worlds!

31....

I waited 2 years before I finally got my rex and I love her. I bought her used and learned to drive stick with her too.

I would wait a bit more if I were you...trust me, I know it sucks. I was on the waiting list for an STi but pulled out a month before mine showed up. I just could'nt fathom paying over $600/month for a car.

So, I'm waiting until used STi's start appearing in the next 2 years. By that time there will be tons of mods available, both power and appearance-wise. Getting to 450 hp should be no sweat.

So wait a bit and then buy used. Get a nice '03 (bugeyes only!!) w/low miles for around 16-18 grand, do about 3-4 grand in mods and you'll have one bad-ass machine.

was 19 when I bought my first car: A 91 Subaru Legacy Turbo. Crashed it 10 months later:( Saved up for 2 years, bought a 2002 RS, $8,000 ca$h down. I know owe $6,000 more with a 5.3% interest and $260 a month payment. I think I got an awesome deal. Just wished I got a WRX, but didn't have enough money at the time. I'm 22 now. Work full time for Quiksilver. In school full time, no girlfriend (yes a money saver) and still live with my parents (saves a TON of money) I pay for school, insurance, gas, mods, you name it. It all depends on what you're willing to sacrifice. I still have money left over for fun. Think about it.

Or, you could be SMART and skip the alcohol and put the money away so that by graduation you could pay about 1/2 down on the car of your choice and never be upside down and not worry about big payments.

The advice to get something else and learn stick shift driving is excellent advice. A WRX is not the best car to learn on.

Enjoy college but study and graduate with honors. The several hundred thousand dollars (or more) you'll earn in your lifetime will make it worth passing up $400/mo worth of alcohol during college.

I'm 20...with a monthly payment of $195 a month on my 2004 WRX...i scrimped and saved up $20,000 put 15,000 down on the car and used the rest for insurance and now all i do is play with the rest of the money modding. But wish i got an STi...oh well they were only special order at the time and i really needed a car.

Turned 25 in September, got my 02 WRX in march. Got a good intership in college that $$$$ good. Taxes suck, down payment sucks, no money left for mods till next summer. Couldn't pass up the deal. Got one used, to much $$$ for new. Made out in the deal. Got the car with 17's with Kuhmos, koni adjustables, stock wheels, mrt front swaybar, and a straight pipe exaust. Be careful when you shop for a WRX. I found 2 and one had so much crap done to it with mods I didn't want. Ask the owner how many times they threw the CEL. Love my WRX!!

Good Luck,
Justin

PS - I've got a buddy in the same situation, save up till college is over.

Your sarcasm detectors must be a bit rusty with your old age. I was being sarcastic about buying that much alcohol. I was using that to illustrate the point that he can have more fun without a $400 car payment than with.

I'm 19, got my WRX six months ago, used, for $18K.

My parents are both big shots in the financial world in Taipei, but because of their frugal lifestyle, they WALK to work from our apartment, whereas their co-workers drive Porsches.

My WRX is the only car in the family. The crash test ratings by the IIHS helped sway my parents decision into helping me get a WRX (they boosted me by 10K, yay!), and my summer house mates who were also really good buddies of mine in high school promised to teach me how to operate the manual tranny.

Overall... i guess as a spoiled responsible kid, the WRX is a wonderful car, and i'm afraid i may have spoiled myself. I was OBSESSED with the wrx before i got it, and spent months on these forums, reading and researching...

To get such a wonderful car at such an early age is something of double edged sword, for if you start with such a nice car, where will you go? And having a nice car doesn't really do much for you in college.... except maybe haters will spit on it and throw beer cans at it when you are drunk.

Overall, i'd say stick with the civic, and wait till after college to get a car. A WRX is a huge distraction, and can be disastrous to a college career. I'd know.

:)

I'm 20. I got a 2002 Celica when I was 18. I was considering a WRX but it was just too much at the time, but now I was able to get a real good deal on the trade in of my Celica and a low interest rate so the WRX isn't much more at all since my credit improved a great deal just for having the Celica for a year.

20- just bought an 04 RS. I could have gotten a WRX, but after looking into insurance it just wasn't really the right time. I work full time for a pharmaceutical company and goto school fulltime at night. I pay for everthing on my own. If you have a job then go for it. It will feel so much better working for it than having someone hand it down to you =) :disco:

I put 5,000 down (including trade in) and my payents are $285 a month.

good luck!

18. One of my friends drove a GSR and he would take turns hard and i loved it. I decided i had to get a nice car and not drive my dads ford explorer for rest of my life. So i literally worked about a year, closer to 9-10 months and saved up 7,000. I didnt want a civic or integra like everyone else. I wanted a 2.5RS during the whole year i worked, becuase it was different and no one else had it. Hence my SN on here haha. I did tons of research on here while i was waiting to get my RS. I decided to goto a local subaru dealership since its 5 minutes away, and i test drive a 03 black wrx. I ended up buying it that day !:p . I put 5 of my 7,000 down and i later got the car refinanced with a better bank instead of through subaru. I only pay 320 a month for payments and 50 for insurance(dad helps me out), and i make double that a month. Im at a community college full time right now also. Trust me 18-21 year olds, you can make it work !!!

31 married, one kid, another one in the oven.

Got my 03 WRX after purposely killing my indestructible 92 Sentra, so my wife would let my buy a new car.

Then, I only had a budget of about $300/m, so I had lease it for four years. At the end of the lease I still have to buy it, because nobody is taking my baby away from me.

I know it is going to end up costing me much more in the long run, but I would have signed anything to get in that car and will never regret it.
“Live for the moment.” Someone said.

When sonicsuby said that you should save your money for doing some drinking and having fun in college he was right IMHO.

College is the time to develop your alcohol tolerance not your taste for fine wine.

Just turned 22 in October, and ordered a white '04 Rex about 3 weeks ago (delivery sometime in Jan). I didn't drive at school, and I never really missed it, as there was no parking and everything was in walking distance anyway. Keep the Civic, do a couple of fun mods to it, and get the 'rex when you graduate and get a good job. I could have saved for like another 6 months and gotten an STi, but I needed a car, and a tuned normal WRX is plenty fast enough for touge.

i dirve an 04 WRX Sedan.

yall are gonna hate me, im 17, 18 in just 15 more days---im a responsivle driver when it comes to regular traffic driving, i dont drive too much like my age, when i do go fast its in a "controlled"" environment and i know the consequences. i look at other drivers my age and see how stupid they drive so at least i know i drive better than them....i love my car and i respect it enough to not wanna kill it. But i know i havnt driven long enough to have the experiance others have, but hey ill get there some day, i used to drive a beater 90 accord until it died, i feel safer in this, it has ABS brakes that work and power when i need it.

edit:
i was amazed that i met a man, one of my dad's friends, who had a wrx, a man that old in a wrx was quite odd to me at first, then i thought, nah, the car is fun for all ages. ;)

23 Just got the WRX about a month and a half ago. I would wait on spending 25g's for a car. Unless you can manage having a job making enough for the car payment and still be able to get good grades. It will be a struggle unless you have a big down payment. You can always do what I did and buy a used turbo car to learn on. Turbo cars can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing. Another big factor is think about your car insurance, thats the BIG killer for me right now since I live in dumb ass NJ. Lets just say my Insurance is more a month then my car payment.

Good luck with your decision!

I think the whole insurance thing is relative to where you live (I live in St. Louis). I just bought my WRX a month ago after my Plymouth Peon got smashed. My insurance only went up about $10 per six months. I've got a wagon, so that may help, but when brother bought his sedan (he lives in Chicago) it only went up about $20 per six months, and he also used to drive a Peon.

As for buying a WRX now, I would say that really depends. If you don't like to party, and plan on working quite a few hours along with going to school, you may be OK. If you are like me when I was in college, you'll probably want to save the money for having fun. I believe that you only go to college once, so live it up while you can. Save the fun car for when you don't have a fun party to go to every night.

going to school and working sucks. luckily i dont have to pay too much for school. i pay about $290 payment and about $260 a month for insurance. for now i still live at home but hopefully will be miving out sometime next year after i get promoted.

its tough but i think it will be worth it.

17 getting my WRX in next month. was suppose to have it last year but parents are dumb and tried to come home and suprise me with a crappy 95 bmw 318 and I said no because I would regret not having the WRX when it is within my reach. So all in all parents were suppose to pay for it but they messed up and my mom took the bmw and no I'm trading her old car in next month for a down and then going to do payments. To me its worth it, yeah I'm a senior in HS but I'm all subie, gettin my 03 WRC impreza decal kit for Christmas about 650 from GB, and then 02 wr blue wrx in january. werd.

That post reminds me of this chick in hs whose daddy had lots of $$ and bought her a brand new (at the time, which was I think 95 actually) BMW 318i and she bitched because he got her the four door when she really wanted the two door.

Life is really rough for some people, huh?

i'm 29.

got the car when i was 28. first new car purchase of my life.

i put down 10k dollars. that helps a LOT with payments. 48 months @ $270 isn't bad at all.

when you're older, insurance isn't so heinous either. my wife and i insure three cars (89 mazda mpv, 99 saab 9-3, 03 wrx wagon) for 2 grand a year. of course, we both have perfect driving records too.

I'm 20

Recently purchased my WRX... my advice is wait until you're adjusted in college. There's a lot of things going on and you don't want all your attention to be directed at a car.

But learning how to drive stick is very important! Get use to pedal control and understand how the manual tranny works. Don't learn on a WRX. In my opinion, I think the WRX is for seasoned stick drivers.

I'm still in school right now... but the WRX sits in my garage most of the time. I drive my 92 Civic SI to school. I'm scared to park in the school parking lot :p

I will be 20 in two weeks, I purchased the car two months after i turned 18. I am attending college, and have no problem paying for the car, insurance, parking, etc myself, and I only work during the summer.
If your civic works fine, i might wait a couple more years, my 90 ranger was not really fit for the long ass drive to school, so I purchased something else, but if you really want the car, then go for it.

unless you've got a spare 20-30k laying around, sell the civic, get a second hand stick, and learn to *really* drive it over the next few years. get the sti when you graduate and not only will you have a brand new car to finish school with, but it will be a new model and probably better than a current '04. if you get one now, it'll be poked by the time you graduate and then you'll need a new one anyway. plus, it's no shame to own an older car at college. it's almost expected. 35.

I'm 22 now, my dad bought me a '94 Toyota MR2 when I was 18 as a graduation present. It was my first manuel and it took some getting used to because my dad taught me on steep hills. It was only 120 HP but it was small and fun to drive. I remember I first started getting interested in Subaru when I watched a rally race on TV (I don't get into any sports other than motorsports) and I thought what a fun job those guys have! I worked full time making $8 an hour so I thought I could afford to buy my own car. So I looked around for used Subaru's for a decent price, I saw the 2.5RS for the first time online at a place in Tucker which is about 1 hour away and he wanted $9,000 and it had 70k miles on it so I thought that sounded fair. Since then (after having a perfect driving record for 2 years) I've had 3 speeding tickets, 1 major collision that was my fault, been hit 3 seperate times, 1 DUI, bent the front axle offroading, cracked the exhaust pipe, and my block has cracks in it. Aside from all of that I love drving the car but maybe I shouldn't be so irrisponsible about driving. I pay $214 a month for the loan and $114 for crappy insurance. I wish I had more money for mods and stuff but I am starting school in January and hopefully they can find me a good paying job so I can get the EJ20T engine in my car!

almost 30.

Cant believe it is their first manual for someone who is 30:eek:

WRX is fine to learn to drive a manual, easy to drive. But I consider it a bit dangerous with the amount of power with the crappy tires subaru puts on them. RS might be a better choice for someone younger. Lift-off throttle oversteer is very easy with the stock setup. Younger people with little driving experience should be required to take a advanced driving school before buying a wrx:disco:

Overall, i'd say stick with the civic, and wait till after college to get a car. A WRX is a huge distraction, and can be disastrous to a college career. I'd know.

:)

Hmm I totally agree. It could be a big distraction for some. However, I rarely drive my car up here in college. Only on weekends do I drive it sometimes. Its a pain in the ass to always think about your car and worry about what some haters might do to it. So like Roy said, anyone about our age or younger should get a civic or something like that. This way you can drive it wherever, park wherever, and not worry about it so much.

Yeah, I know what you guys are saying, but if I took that car then there would be no chance for a WRX. Plus they had the money for a WRX and they knew i wanted it and i kept asknig when they are giong to buy me a car, and so they went and took it upon themselves and bought the bmw, the thing is they could have just asked, there was no reason they didnt get me the WRX. . . none. . . not the speed or anything. . .they just neglect to take interest in my hobbies. All i do is cars and they dont respect that. My brother is really into like soccer and stuff and they are all for that and they support him and go to this games and stuff but they dont even listen to what I'm into. All i do is sit for hours on the net researching wrx's and cars. I know i am spoiled. . . not denying it, but the fact is they didnt even ask me what i wanted . . . i have to tell them all the time and they just dont listen. this has been giong on for liek 2 years, and finally i think i have gotten through.

You're right. They're horrible parents.

Not only did they buy you an expensive car (which teaches you no value of hard work or money), but when you were ungrateful and complained about the car they bought you, they turned around and bought you the one you wanted.

The lesson here: When you're given something you didn't want, it's ok to chastise the person who gave it to you and make them take back their gift and give you what you do want.

And don't bother working for it or thanking them for the initial thought, make sure you talk about how if they had just listened in the first place they would have given you the right gift

Sorry to be such a hater, but you're REALLY ungrateful and IMO, very undeserving of such a fine gift as a BMW or WRX. With your attitude, you really don't deserve to have anything given to you.

It seems like a lot of kids get WRX's for their 16th birthday. I can never understand the parents who just go and drop 20 some thousand on a 16 year old kid. When I was 17 and got my first car, I thought I was lucky that my parents paid the insurance on the $2000 beater I worked all summer for.

Meanwhile, one of my best friends got a 2001 S4 for his 16th, and since he got this car his dad has financed a further $12,000 of mods. Another guy who went to my high school got a silver WRX for his 16th. He's modded the crap out of it and now his dad's buying him an STI for graduation.

No you don't, dude. Having to work for your items makes you appreciate them way more than having them given to you. Instant gratification is nice, but every morning when I start up my WRX I know all the hard work I've put in over the past few years to get to where I could afford it.

Additionally, working for something teaches you to value both what you have earned and also the work you do to earn what you have. That's something it will take a long time for these spoiled kids to learn, and if the mommy and daddy gravy train one day stops service, they're going to be in for a hard lesson.

Do any kids pay for their own cars anymore? I'm glad that my parents helped me out with about $2000 down payment on my first car. I still paid for my payments, insurance, and gas while in school though. Automobile enthusiast or not, it's sad that someone scoffs at a free BMW.

hmm...Believe it or not, Ive read EVERY single post. Thanks for the advice...it looks as if the wisest thing to do is just wait. It just sucks that I dont know anyone with a manual thats willing to let me learn how to drive it. I might just have to learn on the WRX :(

My situation currently is that Im a freshman (1st semester currently), I live with my mom, I dont drink, rarely party, and I have a part time job now. My mom pays my insurance ("liability only" with this 94 civic only worth about $3k), but I pay for ALL my other expenses. I have a $8/hr part-time job right now, and hopefully over the summer I can work full-time.

4+ years is a looooong time to wait, but like some people have said, its a possibility that I might decide on something else (but as of now, Im a die-hard scuby fan :D ).

Hey, if you have some extra money lying around, why don't you find a really cheap manual cars... like a toyota tercel or something.

if you look hard enough you can find anything... like this car here! (http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=140718103&dealer_id=46296064&car_year=1986&make=TOYOTA&distance=100&max_price=&model=COROL&end_year=1986&advcd_on=n&min_price=&address=14623&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1985&color=&cardist=200)

I KNOW this ad wasn't for a manual... just showing an example of cheap cars. I learned manual on my dad's old beater. I'm sure if you really wanted to, you'll find someway to learn stick.

Hopefully before you get your WRX. :p

I am 22 and just got a 2001 RS Coupe a few weeks ago. I wanted one for quite a while but I knew I would get into too much debt if I bought it when I was younger 18. I also go to school full time, so I had to make sure I wouldn't end up in financial trouble with my car.

I am still in school but now I have more income to help whatever circumstances might pop up. I am also considered a high risk driver like many of you here. Not beacause og my driving history but just because of my age. The RS was cheaper to insure and the monthly payments were easy to handle.

I just waited and worked hard for the next 4 years and just saved up a lot of money. Then I was financially ready to buy the car I wanted. Bottom line: Don't sabotage your future for a car.

The biggest thing is making sure you can afford the car. Sit down for a day and work through all your finances. Make sure you won't be missing payments or sacrificing too much to make them.

Other than that the only advice I can give is that you might want to learn to drive stick on something else, then get the Rex. I never thought the Rex was tough to drive transmission wise, but then I already knew how, and had learned on a DSM with a bunch of mods. That was rough. ;)

One option for you if you don't want to stick with the old Honda you have now and want something cheaper than the Rex to learn stick on is a used DSM. You can get one fairly equivilant to a Rex for about 3k. Of course it'll have 100k miles on it and those will likely be hard miles. And learning stick on one isn't the easiest thing in the world, but better to trash the tranny in one of those than in your brand new 25k WRX.

 My age... you don't want t know! BUT, at your age consider this, You'll probably have to finance the car which means you have to carry full collision and comprehensive insurance!! Depending on what state you live in this could amount to several thousand dollars per year!! Don't forget to factor this into your budgeting.

Down with spoiled punks and rich parents. its cool that you all enjoy the car but if YOU cant pay for it dont get it. you dont learn or earn anything by turning your nose up at gifts especially ones you dont deserve in the first place. I am almost 23 and just bought a STI with my money, as somebody said earlier "i have pride". I would clean crappers at a chili factory before I ever asked anybody to make a payment for me. It sounds like the car is funded by the bank of Mom and Dad and he cuts them $20/week for gas and insurance - so $80 a month for an STi.

I work at a dealership nearby. My dad is in the car business. Connections are always nice. We got a great price on an STi, so we didn't pass it up. And whoever posted after STi Boy...Does it bother you enough to hassle me about it? I am lucky, and it's not like I don't work for it, in terms of a 16 year old. Look dude I dont know you so I aint gonna talk s**t, but I am going to say calm down and stop trying to justify being spoiled. Hey good for you, you were born with a silver spoon up your ass, I however was not. And you will never ever ever be able to make me belive that you can appreciate the way that I can being the sole buyer and owner of a STI. So my advice to you is never again talk about being ungrateful because you dont know what it means to actually be grateful for somthing because you have never and will never know what it is like to move out at 16 have 2 jobs and go to school and support yourself. Now just so you know I ain't hatin' I am just calling it how I see it, you may be a great guy but dont think that saying that you are going to start paying for insurance will give you any idea of what some of us had to go through to get some of the cars we drive.

Let the spoiled kids make their mistakes, they would either learn or die from it. Who cares really, other than the ones who are jealous they had to work their arses off to even obtain a beater. When the bad kids are "gone", nothing to worry about.

Really, I don't see a point hassling teens in this specific thread. Simply the thread was intended for a broad view of how much drivers in a particular age group drove WRX's or RS's. So create a thread in OT specifically talking about how stupid it is for 16 year old to drive WRX'es, as it's been discussed to death many times, or don't say anything.

Simpy because we have all been there and done that and know first hand how young people drive (and now we get to compare it to how people drive as they mature). I had only a small handful of friends that drove consistant and sane (and they were the friends with cars not worth trying to drive fast).

Listen, some kids in their teens are lucky enough to get nice cars. Some aren't. As long as you are a responsible driver I really don't see what is so wrong. I'm sure all the people flaming on the spoiled kids would take the cars in a heartbeat if put in their situations. So less hating, more posting age/cars. :)

I'm 17 (18 in 3 months) and I got my 02 WRX used for $15k less than a month ago. My grandmother loaned me the money, I'm paying her back $40 a week plus I pay gas. I got good grades and got A+ certified and my grams let me get it. She's paying insurance because it's really cheap (the cars on her name). I still drive my 97 OBS with 150k miles more often though... I would die if anything happened to the WRX. I've been dreaming about having a WRX ever since 2001... I would go down to the dealership and look at the WRX's they had there at least once a week.
Oh, and it's my first manual too.

It's not 100% about maturity. It's also about driving experience. A 16 year old just doesn't have the experience that an older driver (even someone who is 20) does. I've been driving only 6 years, but I average 17,000 or more miles per year (in fact, my WRX, which I purchased in February is rapidly approaching the 15k mile mark as we speak).

When you put someone with little to no driving experience behind the wheel of a car with a lot of power, the ability to get in trouble is all too present.

That's what most of us worry about for you young guys. And I would have loved to have a car like the WRX when I was that age, but the fact is that it would have been a dangerous situation.

That's all.

I just turned 30.

Depending on where you live and if you don't need a car - don't waste your money on one. Don't get me wrong - I am a car fanatic, I love them, all of them. Been living cars since I was 10. I have owned eveything from a Tercel Wagon (including the bank machine built into the trunk) a string of Civics, Wagon and hatchbacks, Si and DX, a mazda MX3 V6, and my OBS. Until I bought my OBS I was carless for about 2 years.

But I also managed to completely pay off my OBS in 2 months (couldn't wait to save the full amount had to move), and have been able to make very large downpayments first on a loft in downtown Toronto and then sold that a bought a house in downtown Toronto. I have now sold that and have a large savings for when I move back to the city and intend to buy another house.

Don't waste your money on a good car when you're young. Get settled, or travel, use your money to live. Then waste your money when you get older and have extra to burn.

im 17, about to start college next year, and if my payment wasnt almost up i would be screwed. I took over payments from my older brother who screwed himself because he bought the car while he was in high school, and was in debt basically for the next two years. Unless your parents pay for a car that costs more then $10,000, dont try and float it by your self.. too much stress, and plus, you are going to want to mod it and **** when you realyl have more important things to do with your money now

I am 19 myself and I do have to say that driving is a true mixture of maturity as well as experience. My first car was a 1992 240SX coupe which I considered very nice for a first car, although I really wanted a MR2. I paid it off and unfortunally I got rear ended by a drunk woman driving a 2001 Maxima. Long story short I finally got my 1991 MR2 Turbo which was my baby. After spending countless thousands of dollars on repairs as well as a deer running out in front of me as well as hitting black ice and sliding into the side of a bridge (damn snap oversteer) I can say in confidence that you really do need to save your money when you are young because things happen that you simply do not expect to ever happen (like a branch smashing my car in a windstorm). If you have the means to obtain a new wrx or sti, then by all means get it because I would, just be responsible. In any case, I'm currently driving a 1994 Sentra because I was working at a car dealership at the time the storm happened and it was cheap. I dream about owning a sti eventhough I would be more than happy with a WRX and I know that I will own one one day but I try not to be anxious although that is hard sometimes (The beauty of all wheel drive has me) :). I feel that respecting what you own and the power that you have in your hands on the road is one of the biggest assets you can have, but hey thats just my $.02.

Sincerely,

cwiceman

Why do insurance companies charge more for younger drivers. They're not dope, look at the statistics. I was a stupid kid, with the occasional street race. STUPID!!! I'm glad I made it out of my teenage years alive. And I was one of those spoiled kids that got a car to drive (not own tho) when I turned 16. I also paid the insurance (even after it got more expensive because of my stupid driving) and paid half the payments on the car. It made me appreciate it, but not nearly as much as buying my own car duing college and having to pay for that. I thought I appreciated it back then, but today I know that I didn't. I've grown up today and the only thing I learned as a kid was fast driving skills...not the right way to do it.

I'm thankful today for what I have and work hard for every penny. Give the kid 10 years (if he makes it that far) and see if he still thinks he wasn't spoiled...

Not bloody likely. Then again, some people never grow up...

19, Freshmen in College. In high school I worked the first three years and was able to buy a '99 Nissan Altima. It was a good little car, got me to school, work and up to the pass for snowboarding. My senior year I got a job at a local Subaru dealership. I worked full time and still kept my grades up. I was able to pay off my Altima in a year and save enough money to pay payments on a new car and then some. So over Thanksgiving break, I went to my Subie dealer and bought an 04' WRX wagon. My insurance isn't bad at all (good record) and with my trade as a down payment, my monthly payments are only $230. The downside of all this is everytime someone new sees me with my car they think I am just another spoiled rich kid. I worked my *** off for the car and now I am the happiest person I know.

My advice to you is make sure you have enough money in the bank to pay your payments so you don't have to worry about working during the school year. I am glad that I have mine now, and when it is payed off after I graduate, I will have a good trade in so I can get my STI!

I had a hot sport bike when I was 19 and I am happy to say I totalled it at a fairly low speed and then bought older GTI VW.. you think that you are different then the rest and you can handle it.. the reality is .. if it will go fast then you will use it.. and no, at 16 you are not really ready for 250hp.. sorry.. but again, I'm old and way out of touch.. college car - 1980 Toyota Celica (m/t)
my advice is to wait - the celica was a beater and it was for the best - that car took a lot of abuse, but it was 13 years old by the time i graduated and got rid of it. buy a car you can have fun with and not worry about every scratch and dent first - also one with m/t, so you're comfortable with driving one before you buy the wrx

i know it's tough, we drooled over the wrx for almost 4 years before finally trading in our '95 2.2L OB in to buy it - it was worth it. and hey, if you land a good job - you may be able to afford the STi ;)

I am 18, just bought my new '04 WRX 2 weeks ago, payed for the WHOLE thing out of my pocket. I am a freshmen in college.

How could i afford 20k+ out of my pocket? I worked since the day i was 16 at every where from staples at target to a suby and ford delearship. And for my senior year in high school i got a nice paying job $$ working in the IT department of the local school system. My dad and I have also been putting money into a mutual fund ever since i was like 8. Every birthday check i got half of it went in there, so i would be able to use it for a car and apartment when i get out of college. I have to pay the difference in insurance between what my parents payed on the 1998 civic they so gratefully:rolleyes: let me drive and let me trade in. I was nervous as hell worrying about having to finance it, but this way is a whole lot better and I am so grateful i don't have to worry about being in debt and I can focus on my school work.

Just turned 27, bought my 04 WRX 3 months ago. I agree with a bunch of people in here that a WRX should not be your first car and from experience I'd say especially if your under 21 or so. Don't get me wrong I wish I had this car when I was 18, but I probably would have killed it or myself doing some stupid teenager 'look at me' thing. It's better to gain experience as a driver and as a person before getting in to a car that warrants respect. Just MHO

IF you get a REX not only are you stupid but so are your parents.

When I was a kid my dream car was a dino ferrari. A few years later it was a porche sc carrera. Now its a lamborgini gallardo, a car I will never be able to afford(The old lady dissagrees bless her heart).

But I love my little rex..

When you are old enough to afford it, and mature enough to handle it (I barely am at 41), there will be some other little beast thats kickin ass out there you will want. Why not the ford RS200(0-100 in 5 seconds)?

Go buy yourself some little sled you can pound the sand out of . Me and my best friend use to run up and down trabuco/holy jim canyon in a ford cortina. We ruined that car three times over but we can drive the hell outta anything-

I'm 26, very happily married and a home owner with a little baby on the way.

I purchased and '02 WRX which was modded over time(stage2) and sold after about two years. I recently purchased an '04 STi. We also traded in my wifes RSX for a '04 Forester about an month ago. We've owned five brand new cars in the past four years. I drove an '92 Isuzu pickup truck which I was perfectly happy with until I caught the bug. ;)

I know i am spoiled. . . not denying it, but the fact is they didnt even ask me what i wanted . . . i have to tell them all the time and they just dont listen. this has been giong on for liek 2 years, and finally i think i have gotten through.

I am 55 and this made me laughi was amazed that i met a man, one of my dad's friends, who had a wrx, a man that old in a wrx was quite odd to me at first, then i thought, nah, the car is fun for all ages
It took me nine brutal years to finish my degrees but it was all worth it. Save your money, finish college and reward yourself at the first opportunity.

Interesting but not surpising to see the demographics of Impreza, specifically WRX owners. Seems that the average age of WRX owners are 20-25.

I am 34 and recently... well in two weeks (waiting for delivery) leased a 2004 WRX wagon. Initially I was going to lease an Infiniti FX35 (I currently have a 2000 Saab 9-3 Turbo Convertible). But over New Year's day, I got engaged and therefore my financial situation drastically changed. Anyway, I hung-out at the Infiniti forums and they specifically for the FX's... and they seemd to be on average 30-40 years old.

Wow... I feel ol... nah, age is a state of mind. ;)

Anyway to the original poster... you will have more opportunities in the future to enjoy the WRX. But if you can afford the payments, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't get this vehicle. However, if the payment is a hardship... keep the Civic. You have way too many more important things (e.g.education) to focus you attention.

very long story but Ill give you cliff notes on it.

I went to take the car into the dealer because the suspension was making clicking noises and they checked it over and said that I needed some parts replacing. I asked if it was okay to drive or not and they said it was.

Well about 2 days later (the dealer was waiting for parts to arive) I was on my way to work and the front right wheel came loose well the suspension diconected in some way and the car slid (the road was wet because it had just finsihed raining) and as I tried to correct (hard to steer with one wheel working) I slid straight into a kerb hitting my back rigth wheel into the kerb median. Shook me up but I was alright.

Well the cop came and he asked if I could get the car out of the stree. I looked at him   and he understood then he used his car and pushed mine to the side.

We still have the car as my dad was th eone who bought it for me and he now uses it as his daily driver and the only reason he's not getting rid of it is because it's worth much.

26. This is my first car (that's all mine). I bought it in September. I had started looking at WRXs when they first came out about 3 years ago, and now I have an STi. I love my car and glad I waited. I didn't go to college, but I did wait until my finances were better.
The best advice I've seen is to put how much you think payments would be into savings for six months. That will tell if you have the dedication. Then you also have a decent down payment that will lower your payments a bit.
Of course, I waited almost three years before getting mine. I love her. She is the most beautiful car on the road to me, and I have not regrets about getting her. Remember, you can always buy something later, but you may not be able to get rid of it if you buy it too soon. Don' t regret buying the car that you've been dreaming of.

I was lucky enough to get a job at an ecommerce company as a web designer and media developer. I go to school from 8am to 3pm, then to work from 3:30pm - 9pm. Then back home to make my dinner and do homework until 12pm-1am. Then all over again the next day. Was it worth all this trouble to buy the car, make insurance payments, and pay for other additional costs just to have a turbo-charged, AWD vehicle to auto-x and track day with? Sure.

I think my parents bought me an air freshner a while back; I'd take the BMW.

Reading some of these posts could make a guy feel old. I'm thirty, but still think like a young man. Have always loved sports cars and always will. The guys I work with all talk junk about how I'm too old to drive a car like that and too young to be in a mid-life crisis. Comments about the fast and furious are thrown about. My dad's comments when he saw it for the first time were that it didn't look like a married man's car and that he thought the hood scoop was hideous. I have a wife and three kids. And yes, we can all fit in my car, but usually take the wife's car which is a toyo minivan. I traded a 90 Legacy L (two wheel drive) on the STi. Biggest difference between the old days and now: I used to always prefer to take the family in my wife's car when we went somewhere (pathfinder at the time, and only had two children then). Now, whenever we go somewhere in the van, I wish that we were all crammed in the subaru.

Dosent matter about your age.
Driving skills and money DO.
Dont even think of getting a WRX as a car to learn to drive stick in unless 20 grand is chump change for ya. Subaru dosent make trannys like the 5 speed Honda (love my poor Accord - being parted out currently).

Wouldnt be to hard to make your Civic fast and crazy. Spend 3 grand and do an H22A swap (if some reason you cant find em PM me) or TC,SC or a bottle or even a combo. Learn on that. Once you do that, specially with some boost. You should be good to go.

As for your actuall question.
33 in June, '00 RS ( hate 4 doors) Nothing compares to driving a scooby.

Overall my situation kinda sucks becasue i had to drop out of highschool becasue i could not afford to go and eat at the same time i would much rather eat and live now and be able to get that ****en peice of paper later. You gotta have that paper becasue no one belives that you have an iq of 150 they want to see a peice of paper. So i get ****ed becasue i am poor. Im 20 and thought about buying a WRX, but the cost of ownership is just too much. Insurance is about 100 a month, plus i would have to have taken a loan, so theres another 160 a month, plus the 91+ octane which is rediculose now like $2. So I think I'm going to save 5 grand and buy a 2002 2.5 RS. my advice to you is to think long and hard about it, weigh all the options. Its a lot of money to make a descision and then regret it. Good luck man.

29, with a mortgage, lots of toys, and a career in software development...

Awaiting '05 STI, putting down 15 large.

Plenty of drinking money left over, lol.

When I was younger I had an Integra GSR and did no mods to it. I then upgraded to a '97 Type-R. I think that was fine for being so young, girls didn't know it wasn't that fast (GSR), had a nice VTEC sound lol.

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing :p, except for all the money I wasted trying to make my front wheel drive R go faster.... pfff....

I'm 27 I love my WRX...i advice u not to practice on this car if u don't know how to drive manual. Ask somebody to give u a ride...buckle ur safety belt and hold on tight and when u see someone w/ a different WrX, play innocent again...that's how u get boosted!

J/k...finish college and get a stable job untill ur financially able. I'm sure all of us here worked hard to have this car.

I'm 26. I started out with a 98 integra then a 2002 RSX (even president of the SoCal RSX Club. I'm also known as RSX*GRL) and then I realized I wasn't a Honda girl anymore. I love my WRX!!! Driving in the dirt is the best! :D

19, I was saving for a $20k car and just driving my parents cars for the time being. Got to $15k, said screw it and was planning on getting a bike. Parents wouldn't let it fly so they gave me a car to trade in as a downpayment.

19, Just finished Junior year university (pre-med), YAY! I saved up about 10k and bought a wrecked 04 WRX. I had awesome credit (700+) so I was able to get 0% loan for 1 year to finish paying for the repairs. Should be finished in 2 weeks. DAMN I CANNOT WAIT! Not worried about insurance since its going to be under my dad's name and registered in the 2nd safest city in the state.

I'm 20- I had a Jeep I traded in- got $10,000 for the trade in- $0 cash down- 0% financing. I decided why waste the "best" years of my life driving a car I hate when I could easily drive a car I love. I say if you can really afford it w/o sacrificing your life, buy it. I would wait until you learn to drive manual before you buy.
