I have had a sulfer smell coming from my exhaust reccently. I was told here it may be a bad cat, but my CEL light has not come on. I called the dealer and he said the CEL would in fact come on if it was the cat. He thought it may be some bad gas that had been run through the car. I have tried different gas stations since but the smell is still there. Oh, and by the way, my gas mileage has been REALLY bad. I am lucky to get 300-310 miles pert tank. Most of my driving is in the city.
During the summer i got about 280-300 miles per tank, then when it cooled down i got about 320. Now, while it is still cool, my gas mileage has gone back down.
So since there is no CEL light can i DEFINITELY exclude the cat from causing the sulfer smell andthe low mileage?

You should use the MPG number instead of the miles per tank. I think it is more accurate...
300-310 miles "per tank" sounds about right (if you drive in the city)

Bad Smell might be bad cat
then wouldn't the CEL light come on?
Maybe the cat. converter got really fouled with sulfur species after a tank of bad gas, and it's just taking a while to burn off? (generally, a sulfur smell is due to an elevated sulfur content in the gas...)
what's so bad about 300 miles to a tank for city driving? A 3% to 6% drop in fuel economy could be a number of things (assuming we are talking a drop from 320 to 310 or 300) - tires, plugs, etc.

Check light dosent always go on when something is wrong...the smell is a sign of the cat going or being bad. it still might flow but poorly

I had my tailgate bungee'd open to carry some big stufff home from the local Builer's Square. The exaust from this car REEKS, it's the worst I have ever smelled, my only "complaint" about this great car. Mileage 24-29 MPG, Fill your tank, reset odometer, next time you need gas, fill 'er up again, & check the mileage. That's the only accurate way to do it.

I'm getting about 320 a tank, but I know I drive pretty hard sometimes and have no complaints about the mileage. I do change gas station often thouh because I trust no one in my area.
