Anybody know where I can find any information? I've got a turbo from, I was told, a 1982 Subaru GL. What I really want is some cutaway diagrams of this actual turbo, but I know I'll never find that. But things like what kind of boost this can make, and what the wastegate spring will open at, stuff like that.
I'm going to be making a turbine jet engine out of it, and would like to get as much info on it as I can.
Also, I wanted to take it all apart to get it nice and cleaned up, but the most I was able to do, was take the compressor housing off, and the compressor itself off. There are 4 bolts holding some brackets that bolt the turbine housing and the center bit together, I managed to get the 4 bolts out, and the brackets off, but couldn't get the turbine housing off. Also, I haven't been able to loosen the turbine itself, is there a trick to this?
On the compressor, it was threaded opposite from normal, i.e. I had to turn the nut clockwise to loosen it. I had to hold the turbine in place with a socket wrench over it, but no matter what I try, I can't get the turbine to loosen (I'm assuming its also threaded backwards).
I sure have gotten the turbo lookin pretty though! When I bought it, the entire thing was brownish-black, I couldn't even tell which end was the turbine, and which was the compressor! It was GROSS! Got it nice and cleaned up, the compressor side is nice and shiny, and I repainted the turbine housing/middle section with some black wrinkle paint. Had to soak the compressor in alcohol for a few days to get all the gunk off of it, looks brand new now!
Also, the center section (don't know what to call it, thats how empty of turbo knowledge I am! :lol: ) looks full of gunk. I'd really like to get all that apart so it can be thoroughly cleaned, but don't know how to get it all apart. But even if I can't get it apart, what should I use to clean it? Carbouretor cleaner? I'm sure it'll take something beefy, but I don't want to ruin anything. I'm sure it doesn't help, that when I first started playin with it, I was running it with my shop vac jammed in the turbine end, and spraying a ton of WD-40, and dripping a ton of household oil (like for sewing machines) in it to help lubricate. That all probably congealed inside there, haha.
So anyways, who really knows their subaru turbos?! :D
