View Full Version : Turbo for a 2.2L???
xtorted-legacy 12-14-2003, 03:18 AM Alright, i have a question. I have a turbo in my room as i speak. It is a garret t03/t04E hybrid. it has a .48 a/r hot side and a .60 a/r cold side. it is the 57 trim level. it is a nonball bearing, oil cooled only turbo. I picked it up for cheap and its brand new. My question is, is this an option for the 2.2L. I originally bought this turbo for my current car(2nd gen ford probe gt, 2.5L v6), but am selling it for an impreza(an older L which i can modify). SHould i sell this turbo and get something else, or can i use this, combined with an external wastegate(it has no internal wastegate), and make some good power? anyone who knows, could you e-mail me @ jays_hobbyshop@yahoo.com
Warp3 12-14-2003, 01:00 PM It would work but you would have to get a lot of parts fabricated (most notably the up and down pipes). You might be better off with either a pre-made kit or using a TD04 from a WRX (which you can buy up/downpipes for from http://www.uniquemotorsports.com).
...and, BTW, this post belongs in Aftermarket Forced Induction, not Other Factory Turbo. (This forum is for Subarus that come from the factory with a turbo that are NOT 2.0L (WRX) or 2.5L (STi). Aftermarket Forced Induction is for turboing/supercharging a previously naturally-aspirated car.) So try posting there and you'll probably get a lot more help. :)

xtorted-legacy 12-14-2003, 03:24 PM i thought it was more appropriate here, since the 2.2LT bloack out of the legacy is what i would like to use. And it would be more like a turbo "upgrade" then an aftermarket turbo kit on a n/a engine. LOL. Thanks for the info. And if one of the mods could move this to the aftermarket f.i. section, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you. :-)
Warp3 12-14-2003, 09:17 PM Well that's a tricky one...
Swapping the Legacy Turbo's EJ22 into the Impreza is for the "Conversions" forum and the T3/T04 upgrade for the EJ22 is really more for "Other Factory Turbo" (ie. this forum).
I thought you were talking about turboing the N/A EJ22 that came in the aforementioned Impreza, thus my suggestion. Now that I know what you are talking about, I'd say this forum is quite appropriate for the question.

xtorted-legacy 12-15-2003, 01:10 AM All i am asking is will this turbo over sized or under sized for higher boost(14psi-20) on the 2.2L turbo motor. if it can go higher, let me know. if it will run outta gas at 12psi, let me know. Am i looking at a lag monster, or a wanna be super charger? I just dont really wanna spend more money and go through the hassel of selling the one i have. Its a beast of a turbo from my understanding(is suppose to support about 400hp at the crank on a 2.5L engine...probbaly a bit less. heard this from other various online people on other boards). i plan on running low comp (either 8.5:1, the highest i am gonna go, or lower. probably end up around 8:1, maybe lower if my turbo can support higher psi's). i want to run sohc phase 2 heads from a EJ25, unless the coolant passages wont line up. From what i've read through various forums, the crank on the EJ22T is forged. Is this true? I also would like to have various head work done, beefed up springs, retainers, new valves, 2-5 angel valve job, etc. this isnt a short term project, but i am trying to prepare myself(as in, knowing what i want, where i can get it, compatibility, etc. Once i know what i want and what will work, i'll just have to work and save. I really like the ej22T alot, from what i have read. Its the middle of the road between the 2.0 and the 2.5. Not as torquey as the 2.5, but not as gutless before turbo as the 2.0. So any info will be appreicated. I do know a reasonable amount about the workings of these cars. The specifics is where i am lacking. Thanks. :-)
Matt Monson 12-18-2003, 09:50 PM http://not2fast.wryday.com/turbo/maps/all.html#mitsu
here...find your map and run the numbers for your engine and desired boost...Let me know if you need the formulas to do the math and I'll dig them up...
xtorted-legacy 12-19-2003, 12:29 AM i might need the formulas...lol.
xtorted-legacy 01-12-2004, 05:20 PM bump, anyone else have any input?
Matt Monson 01-13-2004, 10:22 PM See what happens when I go on vaction and do't read old threads:rolleyes:
They fall off the page and you never get your answer. Let me look them up and post them for you. They are in an old oissue of SCC...
legacy92ej22t 01-14-2004, 10:16 AM Most who know would tell you the EJ22T is the best motor Subaru has ever built. It's closed deck, has oil squirters, IIRC the crank is forged and the rest is high pressure cast (one step below forged). So stock, the EJ22T internals are good for about 350 chp. So you can really crank it up with a little work.
If you are going to do phase II heads, head work, get stand alone engine management, larger injectors, fuel pump and a large FMIC then your t3/t4 will probably work out pretty good for you (although it may be a little laggy). As long as you go into this knowing you will need to custom fabricate most of your intake plumbing and exhaust. Or if you may want to try and resell your Garrett and look into a nice slightly used IHI turbo. Then you could use some of the extra money you'd save on an up-pipe and down-pipe towards the swap, head work ect.. but you probably won't be looking at as high of numbers with the IHI turbos.
What are you're goals with this build? What kind of numbers are you looking to get?
xtorted-legacy 01-17-2004, 02:18 AM I don't have any specific horsepower rating/torque numbers. All i know is that i have this turbo staring at me, and i dont mind having up/down pipes fabricated. hell, even intercooler pipe isnt that big of a deal. I dont feel like taking a hit on the turbo and buying a used one. I think to myself sometimes i really want something extremely quick without a huge topend. other times, i think i would like to have the huge top end. So i dont really know. I'd settle for somewhere in between. But i do know that i am going to do this the right way, even if it takes me a while. Basically, my goals are turbo dependent. I was just looking for a general idea of how this turbo would perform on the ej22t. And i have read quite a lot and am set on using this block. Mated to an MRT full dog box, i am confident i can get an L impreza moving...:-) Btw, still looking for an L.;-) so anyone in tricounty area let me know. But yeah, I'd like to be able to keep up with my brothers 92' supercharged gt mustang with a dss motor and lentec(sp?) tranny. It would be nice to sound like a v8 and run better than a v8 with only 2.2L of 4 cyclinder power.
xtorted-legacy 02-15-2004, 03:52 PM I've been searching around, and from my understanding, the turbo i have can flow somewhere between 550cfm-700cfm. the turbocharger.com website has my specific turbo rated at 700cfm and 500hp. i dunno how accurate they are. could someone explain/breakdown a flow map for me. I cant make heads or tails out of it.
