View Full Version : convince me... 240SX or 2.5RS?
Xzinum 12-22-2003, 03:42 AM Hey guys, i'm currently brainstorming for a project car. I'm leaning towards a S14 240SX with an SR20 swap pumping about 400whp. But recently, since we got 3 feet of snow, i'm looking at a 2.5RS (the one before the WRX) and i'm wondering if you can help me do my homework. I'm curious about what i can do with a 2.5RS so that it becomes an STi hunter. I'm talking about 25k$ for the whole project including the car. I would like to know if an 2.5 can reliably pump 400hp without major drivetrain mods. Perhaps a EJ20 Swap...i don't know...
help me out here...
thanks
Why start with an RS? An older L will be fine. EJ20 swap plus some mods and a nice suspension and you will have a nice car.

Xzinum 12-22-2003, 03:48 AM I personally love the RS...it's my fav scooby....before the STi came out of course :p
Extraze 12-22-2003, 07:08 AM 2.5RS ... no doubt...
AWD will own that 240SX 6months per year (Guarantied)
:D
cjbruce 12-22-2003, 12:18 PM Is this going to be your daily driver, or a track car only?
Since I went from a 95 240sx to a 99 2.5RS, first of all the insurance is cheaper on the RS by $400 a year. Second the car handles so much better in the rain. Third, I find it more comfortable than the 240sx in both day-to-day driving and long trips...(drove them both down from NC).
EJ22T 12-22-2003, 09:28 PM how about an RS with an STi version I-VII engine and drive train swap into it. Would be one hellofa ride. STi's have been around since 1989, well 1994 for the impreza, you could get a motor from an older STi for a fairly reasonable price.
Mark,
Xzinum 12-23-2003, 12:31 AM This would be both daily driver and the occasional track day.
Traction is a very good point tho.
I must admit that i don't know much about mechanics....but very interested in learning. So I will probly do the swap myself...and maybe a couple of friends. And i must say that drifting is a taste i'm developing so that's why i'm into the 240. Rather buy a pair of tires each month (because of drifting of course ;) ) than a set a 4.
I'm worried about the diffs, wether or not they can tolerate 400whp. Wondering also what would need to be custom (ie. Intake and/or Exhaust manifold) if i do either a EJ20 or an STi engine swap. Is there any posts of ppl documenting on their own swaps?
And perhaps you guys would have a couple of web sites where i can browse through STi Engines and get an idea on how much such a swap would cost me.
Thanks
static_rst 12-23-2003, 01:04 AM a month ago i was seriously considering buying a 240sx, or the rs. the reason why i wanted the 240sx was the fact that it has mad turbo potential, and rwd. the reason why i wanted the rs was because of awd, and styling. i wanted both rwd and awd, hehe. Subaru and nissan are both awsome manufacturers. I imagine, unless you go with an impreza L, that you could get more done with your money with a 240sx, just because you can normally pick them up for cheaper, depending on your location. *rs's seem to be cheaper on the east coast vs. west coast. I am on the west coast :(. The impreza with an sti swap of some sort and awd would be a lot more fun, imho. BTW, i got the rs. Love it, and woudln't trade it for the world, unless someone would trade me for a skyline r34.
imprezaboi 12-23-2003, 08:31 AM I can help with this problem of choice (sorta) I have a GC impreza going to power it up like crazy sometime in the near future. My brother owns a 240 s14, his swap shouldn't be too far from mine. His car sucks in the rain and cannot even think about snow. I can out corner his butt anyday of the week, but he does have more torque and it does feel nice to have good power after 65mph. If you want fun as in sliding around corners (controlled of coarse) then the 240 is your best bet. If you want to dive into a nice parking lot with snow and go into a 90 degree corner at like 35-40mph without the tail fishing out, then your choice would be the GC.
Both great cars love them both, should i take the slammed 240 or my bliang'd out GC??? (tease!):P
:D
rigpin 12-23-2003, 11:33 PM My experiance is that the 240 is easier to work on than the subaru, its also lighter and it feels alittle bit stiffer than the older rs. But im not bad talking the suby since I love my wrx:D They are both great cars either choice would be wise and make an awsome car :disco:
Kostamojen 12-24-2003, 01:47 AM My cousin had a 240. Then it hit a wall in the rain. Just kinda started to spin when he hit a puddle... So, he got an RS after that. Got tired of rain + RWD death.

That's what i like about the 240, i have all my parts picked out. And SCC is doing Project Silvia (although it's an S13  ) but the two engines and body a very similar. And it seems as if the parts are cheaper too.
I checked the curb weights of both the RS and the 240, they hover around 2800lbs.
The weather here is not very favorable for the 240, i must admit....but they are rare here (mild to highly modified).
That's the another reason why I got rid of the 240... it was becoming a belly-button... everybody has one! It all comes down to personal choice... parts wise, each mod for either of the cars are about the same price, trust me, I've sourced them all out.
i have doen the impreza .. next i want to do a 240 w/ an rb25det...
both are going to be fun
