So my battery has apparently decided to die with the cold spat we've received recently. The Subaru dealership wants $140 to replace it! I figured it would be easy to stroll into Sears and have the guy at the counter sell me a new one, but he said they don't carry any for a 2001 RS.

So where should I look? I really don't feel like paying $140 for some stinking OEM battery.

any other auto parts store should be able to get you one. IIRC its a group 35 battery.

a short jumper if the terminals are positioned awkwardly....

Yeah, don't tell'em what its going in, just tell the size you want and pick the one in that size range that fits your requirements.

Just a brief follow-up. I went to a local shop that carried Interstate batteries (also an optima dealer). They wanted $140 for the optima, so I decided to just get a regular Interstate battery. Apparently the size and type is common enough that they had it on hand. $70 later I had a new battery. It's worked just fine for the last few weeks of sub-freezing temperatures.

Unless you have a car like mine that sits in the garage during
the wintertime prone to deepcycling, any decent battery
should work out just fine.

On my daily driver, i would just get some cheepo Sears battery.
hehehe.

btw, for people like me that garages their cars in the wintertime,
I would recommend getting a 12v meter. I use one by Autometer
and was only like $35. :)

I'd get a 'trickle' or 'float' charger and stop worrying about the battery discharging.
This is the best way to store ANY battery, connected to a car or not.

Dropped in the Odyssey pc925 in last night. Awesome. Weighs 25lbs and saves 20lbs off stock. Did I say awesome? hehehehehe......Sorry. More weight off the nose off car = much better handling.

It sits nice and snug in its own specially fitted mount made by Jegs co. and looks pretty good too. Ive decided to postpone mounting the battery in the rear untill I finish most of my weight saving mods so that I can have a better idea where to put it later. And will also get to do more research on the matter too. Yes, the shop had to drill a couple holes in the wheel well area to get it to sit tight, but they did a very clean and surgical job....."Just right" would describe it.

Oh yes, and it runs just fine in the New York cold, cranking the STi motor with ease. FYI I dont have a stereo, and took out AC long ago....and that said, it runs great.

Thanks for the help along the way Uncle Scotty. I dont know if you remember, but we discussed this whole battery relocation thing in a different thread a few months back (wire guages, CCA's, "odyssey," and other Newbie stuff like that)......Maybe Ill get a pc680 come summer.......

My PC680 has done just fine here in Florida....the coldest it has been is ~36-37°F here, but no problems....and with all the stuff I've taken off the front end, the car really does handle amazingly better...I'm almost done with my planned mods and I'm real happy with the results...:)

Can you trickle charge an OPTIMA? Solar card charger?
Yes, you can use any charger on an OPTIMA as long as the voltage is regulated properly. If your charger will remain on indefinitely the voltage should be at 13.8 volts maximum with a one amp maximum current.
