View Full Version : STi wieght loss plan
scarywoody 02-01-2004, 04:56 PM I am currently debating buying an STi. The only thing I'm not happy with is the weight of the car. 3200+ dry. I'm not sure how much gas weighs but with me and gas I'm sure we'll be tipping the scales at 3600-3700lbs. I'm coming from a 1990 Golf w/a 1.8t swap. I've always been into light fast cars, so without sacraficing things like rear seats what can be done?
pics of the current car:

lil WRXer 760 02-01-2004, 06:10 PM Just keep the Golf too! That thing is awesome.
HondaH8er 02-01-2004, 07:24 PM I work with him, and trust me, that Golf is fast. Of course, he should have still gotten a 2-door instead of the 4-door, but either way, my RS has nothing on it (until I go turbo:devil: ). Anyways, let's see, aluminum/CF trunk, no wing, take out the jack and the spare and anything else in the trunk, lose the airbags, and I'm sure there's some other little things I don't know about. My car has a weight in the glovebox door, don't know if the current models do too, or not.
mmmprza 02-01-2004, 07:34 PM love the golf... i'll take that off your hands so you can pick up the STi
Edit: didn't look at that build up page. That thing is pimp juice.
i need a project!!
Dammmmnnitttt
:furious:
lil WRXer 760 02-01-2004, 07:38 PM How much are you selling this thing for?
scarywoody 02-01-2004, 09:05 PM I'm not planning on buying the STi until I hit 25(insurance drop) in November if I can hold out that long. Since I have 10 months I haven't really been actively trying to sell the golf. I put up a post on vwvortex and have seen some interest. I'm looking to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $14K, which is a lot to ask for a Golf, but with $23-25K invested over the last 2 years I think its reasonable. It's a fun car, but the STi is just nuts.
Stepped out of an sti last week. For something that heavy it blew my mind. It accelerated like an F18. It actually stretches the skin on your face if you push it to redline................All I can reccomend is to take out the seats, spare, trunk lining, passenger seat (where does the chick sit?) Other than that your stuck with a tank that flies like a miata............................
2.5rsCoupe@dfw 02-08-2004, 12:21 PM There is quite a few things you can do. ie.. Lightened Rims that should knock off about 50 lbs, Maybe some Lightweight Sparco Seats, you can also look at a smaller gas tank. like some other people said the steering wheel , oh and some nice aftermarket exhaust that is straighter then the stock one will save you weight and should add a nice humm to an sti. A CF Hood and trunk ive also seen some kits to take out those heavy accomidations like power windows and such.
White out 02-09-2004, 01:14 AM Weight for free:
Spare tire
Jack
Trunk carpet
Intake silencer
Passenger air bag
Gut cats, remove heat shields on exhaust
Visors
For cash:
Headers
Down Pipe
Cat back
Lightweight Flywheel
Lightweight Pullys
C/F TRUNK, hood to match
FMIC - some are lighter than the stock top mount
Harnesses - take out stock belts, save 50lbs
Seats - w/o airbags
Steering wheel - w/o airbag
Lightweight lug nuts
Two pice rotors
JDM front bumper
Hardest way:
You loose some weight:banana:
Nick
You expect you + fuel to weigh 400-500 lbs?
Either you're a very big boy, or you need to re-read the fuel tank size.
Fuel weighs between 6-7lbs/gallon, and using 7 to be conservative, filling the 16.9 gallon tank would be no more than 118.3lbs.
White out 02-09-2004, 12:02 PM It is a 15.9 gallon tank.
Nick
scarywoody 02-09-2004, 01:51 PM eh maybe i overguestimated...I weigh about 210. I figured gas weighed more for some reason. thanks for the responses...looks like imagestation doesn't like to host pics anymore:rolleyes:
BOFslime 02-10-2004, 12:47 PM US car's are weighed with a full tank.
Car and driver weighed the sti and the evo, with a full tank, both at exactly 3260.
That car could be lighter, but you would have to sacrifice. I think it did okay on weight considering what's all there.
trail*of*dead 02-19-2004, 06:28 AM I went from a modded VR6 Getta to an STi, bought it without even test driving it, and i regret nothing, i still got a Vw project car going, but the STi is unlike anything i have ever driven before. It does not feel like a heavy car when you are driving it. I dunno though, that golf is like said above "pimp juice", and i am sure that it has gobbs of power from the mod list i saw. find some dude in your area with a broken in Sti and have him take you for a ride and see if it is really something that you want to go into debt for.
