ok here I am again already asking for everyone's help. I have a 97 impreza outback sport with an EJ22 and I'm replacing the engine on it, I found a 96 EJ22 and I'm wondering if it will fit as far as wiring and things like that are concerned

yes and no.... everything will work no problem but 96 is obdI 97 is obdII about how. and about being legal you can only put engines newier than your car not older. some people don't care about taht and will do it anyways. if you want it to be a simple swap it wont be you'll have to convert that motor to obdII or convert your car to OBDI

also I'm sure the 97's had a single port exhaust wile the 96's had a duel port exhaust

just wondering if the same advice would work the same for my 97 outback wagon as with the impreza? its pretty large under there and it does have the hoodscoop so uprgrading it should be a cinch but im just checking out my options before i trade the old blue monster in. it only has 40K on it so far. a pretty hard 40K but you wouldnt know unless you look at the underbody. but still if i can just throw a newer engine and get a similar result as a new one with ugrades i may as well just turn it into the millenium falcon...'dont look like much, but shes got it where it counts' ya know... any input?

My 96 L 2.2 is OBD II?

I think 95 was the last year for OBDI

Unless you are getting a 2.2 for CHEAP...get a 2.5 engine. Not much more trouble...but lil more fun. Or at least a 99 or newer 2.2 which has a lil higher ouput than pre99.

same applys and I agree that a 2.5 isn't that much more troble and won't cost that much to do.

really? is it the semi obdII system I've heard that the 96 isn't fully obdII it uses some OBD II stuff but doesn't have everything

righton, ill keep that 2.5 in mind. cuz what i got in there now just aint cutting it. if i could only blow the motor sooner. maybe ill just skip the oil changes from now on.

ok I found a 98 EJ22 that'll fit. besides it has less miles on it and is in better shape. I'm throwing it in on saturday and hope that everything goes as planned (not that it ever happens that way as most of you know)

Good Luck. Make sure you change the rear main seal and use some RTV on the baffle plate...otherwise you'll be pulling her back out before long...Subarus love to bleed from there. The seal is less than $12.00 from the dealer.

what mods are involved in putting an EJ25 in? I did put a 98 EJ22 in yesterday but I'm having some problems with it. I'd really like to throw in a bigger engine but had a hard time finding one.

if you want to do that, and like to do tedius work, i need my K member removed so i can fill the bushings with rubber. wanna by my monkey?

u are nuts. having problems with EJ22? why?

theres a post on how to do EJ25 conversion on your car. on a 97, its purely bolt oin and plug in EJ25 ecu. thats it man.

ok here's the low down on the hoe down. the engine i put in has no compression on cylinders 1 2 and 4. the engine had been sitting for a couple years or so since last ran. $650 well spent lemme tell ya. I am gonna take the engine back but don't wanna take it out til I find a transplant for it. I've spent more time workin on the damn car than driving it. thank god for warranties or I'd be even more pissed. do they sell TNT for cars? if so hook me up

ok here it is, I finally got my car running, kinda half assed it but it works. I bought a used EJ22 from a 98 impreza and the valves were all messed up so I just used the shortblock with my original heads. the original heads have 216k miles but the valves were just about as clean as new so I put them on the the block, they fit great and I'm showing 50-55 PSI oil pressure at 4k RPM at temp. I also noticed a pretty noticable gain in power, probably helps that I'm running 100LL avgas too :D thank you everyone for your help I'm sure I'll need help again in the near future.
