View Full Version : Club member's former cars
IsraelGT 05-16-2000, 01:47 PM It is interesting to see what kind of cars you used to before your Scoobie.
I had :
1. Peugote 205 GTI- fun to drive but fell apart from day one.
2. Mazda MX-3 V-6- Liked it a lot, could use more grunt but otherwise, good looks, good handling and reliable.
3. Subaru Impreza Turbo (GT)- Great Great car, everything I want from a car, reliable, handles like a dream and goes like a rocket (5.5 0-60).
BugBomb 05-16-2000, 01:58 PM 1983 Pontiac Bonneville Station-Wagon, Sunshine Yellow (CHEESE WAGON!). What a hog.
1993 Escort LX: Very nice car. Got me there every time, lasted past 200,000 miles (!!) and still running. Not very fast but a lot of fun to drive before I ever drove my scooby. That just ruined it.
2000 RS blue 4-dr: hehehe
Saw Jai 05-16-2000, 02:03 PM 1986 Honda Civic Hatchback (DX?)
though its a piece of trash...it kicked ass..I could push it and push it and it would never break down...hehe
soon to be (end of the week)
2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/biggrin.gif
Paisan 05-16-2000, 02:05 PM 1974 Olds 98 Regency Hardtop, 455 Rocket, Was reffered to as both an immovable object and an unstoppable force. Could go fast, carry 6 in comfort and 5-6 stiffs in the trunk.
1983 Dodge Ramcharger, 318, RWD. Huge storage, handled decent, loads of power, fell apart due to cheap dodge interior, doors, etc.
198X Lebaron GTS Turbo. Very nice car, leather, 50 series tires, fast as all hell. Bad tranny and brakes constanty went.
1991 Ford Escort. Bad tranny, AAmco messed it up more, and i had it in there every month during the 2 year warranty. Eventually they scratched it up good, and their insurance company bought it from me.
1997 Isuzu Rodeo. Best car I've ever owned. Beat the piss out of it for 3 years, 115K miles, and only did 1 set of tires, 2 sets of brakes, and oil changes. Runs like the day I took it off the lot.
1988 Subaru XT6. Second best car i've owned. Handles like a dream, tons of power, and all the bells and whistles.
Next.... 2000 Subaru Legacy GT Limited, my first stick, we'll see what happens with it. I'm taking a vote, Black or Timberline Green? Cast your vote today!

I'll never sell the MR2 or the Impreza. In my book, they're collectables!

wistful 05-16-2000, 02:32 PM @ the ripe young age of 16-
1) my parents old 1987 Acura Legend.
2) My sis moved, so I got her 1996 Volvo 850. (No Turbo)
3) My job was hella far, so I needed a car w/ better gas mileage - 1999 Civic Dx *auto*... Hey, look guys, I had no choice on this one.
4) Last sunday, I just got a fatty scholarship from my college, so well, my new Baby Blue Ridge Pearl '00 2.5RS coupe, with a virginal 7 miles on it. THis one's a keeper!
AWDriver 05-16-2000, 02:35 PM 1978 VW Panel Van
-aka "The Shaggin Wagon". Bright green paint, black and white checkered linoleum floor, wood panelled interior, fake sheepskin headliner, 68 HP 2.0L flat 4, over 3500 lbs. I learned to drive a stick in this thing, and loved every minute of it!
1969 Ford F250 Camper Special
-paid $250 bucks, sold 3 months later for $200. Averaged 8 mpg with a 360 V8. AM radio only and NO front brakes (they were disconnected). Not fun in the rain.
1980 BMW 320i
-my first little rocket. Felt fast, very low with BBS rims and really wide, bald tires. Very fun in the dry, not fun in the rain (again). 360 spins were laughably easy to achieve.
1971 Datsun 240Z
-a race car for the street. Snarly straight-6 with 7500 rpm redline, supremely balanced handling, debadged and painted bright red, more than a few people asked me if it was a Ferrari http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif I loved that car, but alas my confidence grew too rapdily and I sideswiped a telephone pole. Totaled, no collision insurance http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/frown.gif Rear drums brakes are bad.
1984 VW Rabbit GTI
-peppy and fun, lots of exhaust pops and crackles (woohoo!), the best steering feel I've ever experienced. 2100 lbs, light and nimble. A money pit, though, as older VWs tend to be.
1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged
-why did I sell this?! 1.6L supercharged twin-cam 16 valve 4-cylinder, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, 7500 rpm redline, mid-engined. Didn't quite live up to it's exotic specifications, but FUN FUN FUN!
2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS
-no doubt, the best of the bunch. Feels the most like a big fun toy, able to conquer anything. I've done things in this car that I would never have attempted in anything else. Never ceases to amaze me.

Travis R 05-16-2000, 03:09 PM It seems like this thread came up a long time ago, but oh well, it's still fun.
1st car: '82 Chevy Pickup LWB, it had a straight six in it and sucked gas, but it was cheap, $500 from my grandmother.
2nd car: '65 Mustang, 289 V8, plenty of go, not so good stop (4 wheel drum brakes http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/eek.gif ), I still have it. Anyone wanna buy it? http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/wink.gif Hey Scooby South, don't you love the looks you get in old muscle cars?
3rd car: '78 Corolla SR-5(the SR-% was the "hot rod"), this car was free and I drove it like I stole it everyday. This car refused to die, and it ran better the day I sold it for $750 than when I got it. Hey Boxerman, don't you love the looks you get in clapped out old Jap cars? http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/tongue.gif
4th car: '99 Impreza 2.5 RS, what can I say, it beats the pants off all my previous cars.
5th car: (looking into my crystal ball) '02 Impreza Turbo, what can I say it's going to blow the doors off of all my previous cars (and alot of other peoples cars too). http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif

Black98RS 05-16-2000, 03:15 PM Here we go:
1st: 1988 Ford Escort Pony
2nd: 1988 Toyota Celica ST
3rd: 1993 Ford Probe GT (first car w/165hp!)
4th: 1989 Nissan Pathfinder
5th: 1998 Subaru Impreza RS(2nd car w/165hp)
The RS is most fun car I've ever owned...but the Probe had some 'git up and go too.
Catfish 05-16-2000, 03:27 PM 1971 VW Beetle
My first car, paid $500. Baby Blue w/ stock 1.6L. Had cool Formula Vee 15" rims and a short-throw Hurst shifter with custom steering wheel. Leaked oil like a sieve so I ended up buying the "How to Keep your VW Alive for the Compleat Idiot" book to fix it. Ended up rebuilding the entire engine while I was at it. Great learning experience.
1968 VW Beetle
"Midnight" Blue. Lowered it with "shorty" KYB struts and by adjusting the rear trailing arms. Got a set of wide 15" rims with 205 tires all around. Handled much better and I built the 1.6L to 1776cc with dual carbs and stinger exhaust. It was LOUD, but it was fun.
1954 VW Beetle (YES 1954)
Bought for $500 with no interior, but it had the original steering wheel and the pan and body #'s matched. 2nd year of the "Oval" rear window, last year of American version with semaphore turn signals. Lowered it, installed a custom interior and installed a home-built 2180cc engine. That thing could jump off the ground in 1st gear. What a blast to drive. Sold for $6K and bought the Porsche from a neighbor.
1971 911 Porsche
Pretty tired when I got it, but it ran and was fun to drive. Ended up rebuilding part of the engine, but it needed more work. I was going to school at the time and Porsche parts cost a ton of $$$, so the Porsche wasn't really ideal for me. Grudgingly sold it for $7K and bought the Honda. Promised myself I would own another someday.
1991 Honda Civic DX
Bought it with 30K miles for $5500 and drove it until it had 75K miles. At which time I bought and installed myself a built-up 1.8L Acura Integra NON-Vtec. That thing went from mundane commuter to fun to drive. Crashed it on a Fwy one night, totalling it.
1972 Datsun 240Z (current)
Bought for $1500, currently have $10K invested. Fully adjustable coil-over suspension with polyurethane bushings. Professionally built 3.0L L-6 engine dynoed at 290hp (gross). Best handling car I've ever driven, and is faster than 90% of the cars out there. Quite a blast to drive, especially at Laguna Seca (NASA driving school) This is easily my favorite car ever.
2000 Subaru 2.5RS (current)
Bought for $20K. Easily the most expensive car I've ever owned. Have yet to see how much fun it is, but it certainly beats the Honda for daily driving duties.

samurai 05-16-2000, 03:28 PM First drive?
1-1981 NIssan Maxima Station Wagon. Piece of crap. End of story..
2-1971 240Z. I will keep this until the day I die. I will get it from my dad after he's done with it. Original car bought in '71 with original paint!
3-1985 Honda Prelude. Great car. Has lasted throughout college and was a workhorse for me.
4-2000 Impreza 2.5RS. My new "play toy". I only have 750 miles on it so I'm taking it easly. I feel like a little kid now.. I wanna getta new suspension.. I wanna getta new suspension.. WAAAAHH WAAAAAHHH WAAAAHHH. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/biggrin.gif

Joe Lee 05-16-2000, 03:30 PM 1981 Pontiac T1000 (it was a Chevy Chevette really!) – 4 doors, 4 cylinders, 4 wheels, 5 gears and you could slide it like nobody's business! Learned all about 4-wheel drifts in it, It was great in the snow and a capable off-roader as well.
198? Datsun 310 – Beat to hell and eventually caught fire on the Parkway (It was my sisters and she gave it to me)
1984 Renault Alliance – Absolute, total, utter P.O.S. Automatic to boot. 0-60 somewhere around 15 seconds!
1984 Nissan 300ZX - Not a turbo but at least a stick! My first real car after college and boy did I get a lot of tickets. Fast enough and handled well enough. Dash looked like a fighter plane cockpit – one of the first all-digital cars and also one of the first cars that talked to you – "Lights are on" "Fuel level is low" and such a sexy voice...
1989(?) Suzuki Samurai – Couldn't kill it and it was nice having a little convertible at the beach.
1987 Dodge Colt – Surprisingly quick and agile and absolutely reliable. Go figure. Body rusted all to hell but it started every time.
1994 Honda Civic DX – Yes, I KNOW Honduhs are evil, but they are also reliable, get good gas mileage, are reasonably priced and perform well for the money!
1995 Toyota 4-Runner V6 – Needed it to tow a pop-up camper, haul 4 mountain bikes and 2 dogs and generally beat up on. Still have it!
2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS Coupe – Absolutely a blast (like you needed me to tell you that!)
2000-2001 Toyota MR2 (Spyder) or Honda S2000 or BMW Z3 2.8 or Mazda Miata – My wife is dying for a little convertible!
wolve80 05-16-2000, 03:38 PM 1988 Subaru GL Auto. That thing didn't stop running. The tranny gave out, and it wouldn't shift into gear, but the engine never stopped. The tranny got fixed, and it's still on the road in NJ.
1995 Ford Escort Lx Auto. Neat little car, it was fun to tinker with and I added some toys to it, (don't ask why, I like to tinker with my cars) including a body kit, nice stereo, alarm, etc. I was hit by a toyota 4runner which totaled the car.
1994 Ford Escort Lx Stick. My first manual, and it was fun to learn in this car. I toyed with this one too, new suspension, muffler, and some custom paint work. The stereo from the old car was transplanted. I traded this one in for my 2000 RS http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/smile.gif I paid 6,600 for it, got 6,337 on the trade in after a year of ownership. I wasn't complainin.

Tyrmeltr 05-16-2000, 04:40 PM First car - 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. Real dz 302 with dual hollies, 4 wheel discs, 4 speed transmission, 12 bolt posi, LeMans Blue w White rallies, and black and white houndstooth interior. Bought as a fixer upper at an auction. 3 years of auto shop and hard work, and I had the nicest chick magnet in Santa Monica. Was perfect before I was hit by drunk driver and it was totaled. I didn't have full coverage, and the other guy had no insurance.
2nd - 1982 Datsun 280ZX coupe - nothing special
3rd - 1986 Porsche Carrera. Many Ruf parts on this car, breezed the 1/4 in around 13.5 secs. Handled twice as well as it accelerated. Was my father's car, and was give to me as a gift (yes you may hate me now). He got tired of the noise, and bought a Mercedes. I guess he saw how depressed I was losing my Z28 and driving the 280ZX.
One night I'm crossing an intersection with a stale green light. Midway through a P.O.S.
70's Ford pickup full 'o lawnmowers broadsides me at 50+ m.p.h. My beautifull Carrera was destroyed. The guy driving had at least a 12 pack of empty corona bottles in it. I still remember as he stumbled from his truck, ranchero music blasting slurring "?que pasa muchacho wey?" and laughing his ass off.
Sure enough, no I.D., No insurance, etc. This time I had comp/collision/Unisured motorist and was set. I used part of my compensation to put a 50% down payment on my Impreza. The rest is history....Later all

deepbeep 05-16-2000, 05:35 PM In the past I have owned:
1966 Volvo 122S - ran for one week, before blowing the engine. Sold it immediately.
1974 Volvo 164 - POS
1966 VW Bug - I still own this, it's sitting in my garage, on jackstands, with a half-completed suspension/brake job. Because of some injuries I'm not able to wrench on it anymore.
1975 BMW 2002 - Still own this as well, same story as with the Bug... It's been sitting in my driveway for a year because I haven't been able to drive it. My shoulders just won't deal with non-powersteering cars anymore.
2000 RS Coupe, new last saturday.
Also owned a 1963 Lambretta TV175 Ser. III (sold to a friend) and a 1970 Vespa Rally 180 (stolen).

84 Ford E150 van, 302 V8, short wheel base, 5 capt's chairs. The styling band hauling mobile, went to many gigs, hauled much equipment, took out a brick wall with just a couple dents, drove it to a rusty exhaustion. Cheapest and easiest to work on. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/cool.gif
89 Pontiac LeMans - Only redeeming quality was that its first and only owner was a dealer's elderly father (really), so it was in great shape at 84K miles. At 140K, it ain't looking too good inside, but it still runs. http://208.9.184.67/NonCGI/redface.gif

A nice shiny black Silvia-nice car, looks good, has the HP to back up the looks and it handles well for a RWD. I got a great chance to flog the crap out of it this afternoon and I must say it is a fun car! Think they will notice if I return it with bald rear tires? This is one car you won't be seeing in the US either. Put it in the list with the GTR and the WRX. Well gotta go for a drive.....

SecretAgentMan 05-17-2000, 05:06 AM -76 Dodge Aspen SE 318
(slightly modded - cams/carb), Sold it recently...loved it...fast in a straight line...but unbelievably scary in the corners. And it caused reaction...since most of my friends had Volvo's...(I'm from Sweden) or small GTI's. Opened a couple of cans of whoopa$$ with it.
-76 Opel Ascona B 1.8 S
A very fun car, bought it cheap as a winter alternative to the Dodge. Put a Weber 36/36 on it, and got a limited slip diff for it, and went slideways, great fun, and unbelievably shortly geared, 3500 rpm at 60 mph, made it quick, but topspeed was around 100 mph....and the mpg...man...I was lucky to get above 15...
-91 Opel Kadett Caravan 1.6 S ("estate")
My worst purchase ever...bought it in almost mint condition, got it cheap...2 yrs later it fell apart from rust...underpowered cheap-o wagon, great mileage and good economy. But o-so boring. I was lucky to get it sold...
-96 Volvo 960 2.5 E
An impulse purchase...got it from a colleague who had ordered a new S80...fairly cheap...car had a lot of mileage on it, but was in great condition.
Lot's of grunt from the smooth inline six. And it was quite fast and nimble for it's size...and RWD...lot's of fun in the winter.
Sold it recently...for my..
MY00 Subaru Impreza GT (turbo) sedan, silver.
I love this car, will never sell it. It's perfect in almost every way...I'll change the wheels (OZ Superleggera 17":s), maybe get some Eibach's...and the exhaust.
...the it'll be perfect.
So far I've done about 1200 miles in it...and it's brutal already, even though using only about 4k rpm...with some peaks going a tad higher...
I'll probably get another car for those shopping rounds later on...but this is a "keeper".

Had a Ford V8 in it - That car was FAST.
'68 Renault 10
Turned on a dime.
'76 Honda Civic
Another quick car. It had an amazing 2-speed manual "Hondamatic" – no clutch.
'75 Toyota Corolla
Paid $50 – the best investment in a car I'd ever made.
'83 Toyota Corolla SR5 Hatch
My first 'practical' car. What was I thinking?
'79 Mercury Cougar
A boat of a car. It was 18 feet long, but looked cool – low slung and wide. If it'd only had the 350 Cleveland (had the Windsor instead). It was my first automatic.
'90 Hyundai Excel CXL 4-door hatch
My first new car. Totaled it in '94.
'83 Toyota Camry
I bought with 300,000km on it. It still gave me 80,000 more.

Warp3 05-17-2000, 10:28 AM 1) 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7
(400cu (6.6L) V8 automatic RWD)
It sucked severely and weighed TONS but I wanted a car and was in a hurry to buy (stupid!). Power windows and seats but they didn't work (except the passenger window). It was missing on one cylinder (a burnt valve I think). Later hauled off by those "free removal" people when it no longer would run.
2) 1991 Plymouth Laser RS
(2.0L DOHC I-4 5-speed FWD)
LOTS of fun, quite nimble, overall a great little car. A few minor problems. Currently sitting in my yard with transmission problems (synchros).

jaybird 05-17-2000, 11:37 AM This is fun!!! Here we go 1st to latest since 15, now I'm 27. people have cool rides so far. Nice VWs Catfish!
71 VW Superbeetle, 1941cc, hot cam, 45 heads, dual Dells, stinger exhaust, hurst shifter, lowered 1", Bus transaxle, Empi 15" rims, 205 60 Comp TAs, dechromed, no bumbers or goofy signals, one piece side windows, pop out side rears, fog lights in front vent, "custom" interior and stereo, striped silver front to midnight blue rear, oh and kewl "OAKLEY Thermoneuclear Protection" sticker. Would take just about anything off the line.
72 Chevy Monte Carlo SS454 (beater). Paid $1800 for while doing up the beetle. Rear ended by drunk body shop owner, very litle damage but he repainted, restitched and cleaned it up for me not to call the cops. Sold it for $3600 Could have kicked myself. Was worth about $10,000 during muscle car craze of 92.
89 Honda 750 VFR Intercepter, Vance&Hines Pipe. Had for Spring and summer of senior year in high school. Sold due to fear after a friends really bad crash.
78 Chevy Monte Carlo. Beater 2nd car to beetle.
83 Subaru GL Hatchback. Bulletproof except to rust. Next beater 2nd to beetle
83 Toyota Tercel 4wd wagon. Originally purchased as next beater, but ended up becoming only vehicle when I blew the motor in the beetle and parted it out. Went to college and needed the $$$$ Had the Tercel through most of school and put 60,000 miles on it in 3 1/2 years. Again a victim of rust.
84 VW GTI. Rearended and totaled after just 4 months.
91 Nissan stripped down 4x4 PU. Seemed good when I got it in 95. Ownly had 45,000 miles.
72 Porche 914. Finally another project!, or so I thought. It needed a lot of work and though mechanically similar to beetle, but parts were like 4 times as expensive. The head gasket in the Nissan blew after just six months causing major engine damage and I got only half what I paid for it after threatening the dealer with a law suit. Got rid of the truck and the Porche to have a nice downpayment for my 1st brand new car.
96 Subaru Impreza Outback 5sp Hunter Green. 15" alloys, Pirelli tires and PIAA fog lights. Loved this car. one of the first in my area to have an Outback or an Impreza. Would still have it but got married and wife refused to learn to drive a stick so,
99 Subaru Outback Sport Auto Arcadia Green. No mods(yet)except a bike rack. Looking to get another car in a couple months. I'm thinking of the Impreza RS, Civic Si, or VW GTI VR6/1.8T.
typos, sorry so long

jedon 05-17-2000, 11:49 AM 1965 Ford Pickup - lots of plate steel, bent a rod, fixed it.
198x Honda Civic - orange with vinal and roof rack, blew the head gasket, replaced engine, warped head, head on into a vw hatcback
197x? Datsun 510 - Rolled it
1969 BMW 2002 - fun fun! t-boned an El Camino but it still ran but eventually died from rust in the gas tank
Yamaha 125 street bike - cheapest thing I could find, then I blew the engine
Suzuki 450 - better than the Yamaha, friend slid it, never the same after that, sold it
1969 BMW 2600 4dr straight 6 - big ol beast, lotsa power, bad electrical, sold to ecology
1988 Honda Hawk NT650 (still have) - light and fun
1993 RX-7 TwinTurbo Brilliant Black R1. - *cry* totally sweet and fast, handled like it was on rails except in the rain where I rolled it.
Now debating what to get next, another RX-7, a turbo RS, a M3, a Z3, a 911? Hmmm choices.

Sammy 05-17-2000, 01:45 PM 1982 AMC SX4 (my first 4wd coupe!! too bad it was built by AMC.. lossa problems.. huge tires though!)
1985 Buick Regal LTD (inherited from my grandpa, comfy, good for making out.. again none to reliable.. maybe if I changed the oil on occasion?)
1986 Jetta GL (5-speed, bought in 1991 for $4000 -- lotsa fun, manual sunroof, installed cool JVC stereo which had a face that tilted down so that you could insert the casette -- moved to Hawaii so had to sell it after only 6 mos -- sold it for $4500)
1987 Toyota Tercel (bought in Hawaii from an old chinese guy who was going to trade it @ the same dealership that I was checking out cars at -- we snuck out drove out of the parking lot with one of the salesman yelling @ us saying that what we were doing was "illegal" -- adequate transportation -- bought it for $2500, sold it one year later for $3500)
1978 International Scout II (Mom's old car, REALLY BIG TIRES -- had a 30lb chain that I used to drag people out of the snow in the Phila blizzard of '93, my second stick)
1984 Subaru GL 2Dr hatchback (My first subie! Literally bought it from a LOL with only 40k on it in 1994 for $800 -- threw a $1000 clutch in it and it drove great until the engine seized a year later on I84 in CT - doh!)
1996 Dodge Neon Highline Sedan 5-spd (bought brand new from a slimy dealership in Danbury, CT -- saw an add in the paper listing it for $9800 NEW -- went there and was told it was sold, BUT they had another one that was only $13,000 -- while I was leaving they suddenly found out that it WASN'T sold! Gee, imagine that.. drove it, liked it, agreed to buy it, told that I didn't qualify for the $400 recent grad discount that had been factored into the price (not listed in the ad, of course) -- but @ $10200 it was still $3300 under MSRP -- financed it, brought it home, found out that they had added $3000 to the price while reviewing the paperwork -- brought it back, had several discussions with several people, threatend to sue, call BBB, etc -- original negotiated price restored -- enjoyed until sold 2 weeks ago with 80,000 miles for $4000
1999 Impreza 2.5RS Black, 5-spd (needed 4wd for move to Buffalo, it was this or an Audi A4 2.8 quattro -- price was deciding factor -- nonetheless SWEEET!!)
