View Full Version : ran out of gas
Gansan 02-22-2004, 10:12 PM I was on my way to the gas station earlier today since I was running extremely low and ended up bogging on a steep incline. Check egnine light came on and threw Code P02320, Fuel Pump Primary Circuit malfuntion. Made it to the gas station and fueled up.
Did it throw a CEL because I ran out of gas momentarily or should I check the fuel pump? I've driven the car with that little amount of gas before but never on a grade so steep. Also could i have done any damage to the fuel system or injectors? Any insight would be great. TIA:o
I ran out of gas the first week rolling into a gas station put on 2500 miles since no issues...

If your car feels like its running right now, you're probably ok. There's a couple bad things that can happen if you run out of gas though:
1) overheat your fuel pump. If the subies are in-tank which I think they are, you can damage your pump by running chronically low on gas since they use fuel to keep the pump cool.
2) suck up gunk from the tank bottom. Your car isnt old enough to have a bunch of junk in the tank, but even so I'd consider changing my fuel filter early if you've run out of gas or run low on gas more than a few times. if your filter is still good you shouldnt have sucked anything through to the injectors.
particleeffect 02-23-2004, 08:37 AM your engine does not like sucking in air instead of gas when you hit boost. this isn't some old truck, the engine is alot more tuned and needs a steady flow of gas. don't be lazy, just fill up at 1/4 tank always. (that way you don't need to worry so much about the fuel moving out of reach of the fuel pickup)
BAD! but hey it's your cars.
mlambert 02-23-2004, 09:42 AM Since I started driving around 13 years ago, Ive never once ran out of gas in any car/truck/motorcycle/dune buggy/etc while I'm driving. Thats pretty damn careless.
only thing I can think of is riding lawnmowers :)
Thumper23 02-23-2004, 10:30 AM I've never done it personally. Came to within a half a gallon once in my jeep.
Red Rocket 02-23-2004, 12:04 PM There have been a number of reports of people running better 1/4 mile times with a half tank of gas than with an almost empty tank. This is often attributed to the fuel temperature staying cooler. Unused fuel is recirculated back into the tank, so if there is less, it heats up faster. Our cars run so rich because the extra fuel is used as in cylinder cooling.
Also, not having enough feul can lead to momentary starvation, like for a split second, which is also very bad.

Yes and this is what happened, I didnt really run out of gas but did for a split second since i was on a hill. What do you mean by "very bad"?
Should i be concerned about the CEL or is the "normal" for the circumstances?

engine goes really lean in a split second = detonation. very bad, very very bad if you are boosting.

Wow chill out, first off i have never run outta gas ever....secondly i didnt completely run out of gas just for a split second since there was very little fuel in the tank, when this happened i was within 50ft of the gas station.
My question here is not am I a dip **** for running out of gas? it is how bad could this have been? All you flamers need to get over yourselves and instead of preaching try to help out.
mlambert 02-24-2004, 10:54 AM Help out with what? Pitching in to buy you a midget who can follow you around all the time reminding you to do various things that youre forgetting?
