View Full Version : Um, you know, so..., {cackle}

OK, lots of people do this but there's one person that works near me that does it simply as her way of communication. First, let me say that she is probably one of the "nicest" people there is: a Christian woman, totally unselfish, pleasant, I mean generally a good person.

HOWEVER..........................

When she speaks, she hits all of the annoying habits list. First, she says "um" but, not only that, she actually enunciates them very clearly AND drags them out ("UMmmmmmm"). Second, she laughs after she says things that aren't funny. I mean, they're not even intended to be funny. Just simple things - I heard her talking to someone about her recent perm (deserves its own thread). Someone said it look curlier today (hoooo boy) and she said she used her hot rollers this morning --- and then laughed! Um, did I miss teh f00n4y?!?! Third, there are intermittent "you know"'s thrown everywhere throughout her sentences. And then, the kicker of all kickers, virtually every sentence ends with a trailing "so, ....."

Two other things: she's also pretty heavy and I think is kinda insecure and comes off as nervous a lot. I think those two things contribute to her seeming like she's short of breath all the time. So, most of the time she's talking, you get the feeling she's short of breath and wish she'd stop to catch it.

Thankfully, I don't talk directly with her often but she's nearby so I can hear whenever she talks to anybody and her cackle is ear-splitting. Hmmmmmm, me thinks I have to figure out how to capture sound clips at work.............

I knew this woman who repeatedly would precede every sentence with "needless to say . . . " I so hated that. You know, then don't ****ing say it!

This is also why she "Ummmmmmms" and giggles after everything she says. Poor thing, be sweet to her, she's sweet to you.

Ummmmmm... what I would do is hide in a corner away from these freaks. :)

It's called a "verbal crutch" and as Candy said, it tends to manifest itself when people are nervous. The only thing for it is to build their confidence, but that's not something you can do on your coffee break really.

I've got a friend who says "whatever" constantly throughout his sentences. He's a great guy, athletic, smart, awesome job, so there's really no reason for HIM to be nervous.

We just constantly point it out. We had a buzzer at one point, and buzzed him whenever he said it. He's getting better now :)

Oh, trust me, I don't put up any adverse vibes when talking to her. I agree, if anything, I try to just act very comfortable around her but she's in her early 40s, so I think its quite ingrained by now.

A lady who works for me says "okay" at least 50 times per day. Every time she sits down at her desk, every time she finishes a phone call or conversation and basically every time that she starts a new thought. I don't think that she is wired right...
