i now officially hate trying to work with car dealers..

i took the sheet they gave me to the credit union..

4 yrs- $575.00 a month
5 yrs- $478.00 a month

i make a little over 500 every 2 weeks, and i cant spend EVERY penny on the car, plus insurance is about $600 every 3 months on it..

i bitched with the dealer for about 20 minutes he said..there is NO WAY that dealers are selling them for invoice (not off the lot anyway) only on pre-orders

he said the MOST he could do was take off a couple hundred bucks just to show that he's trying.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif
nd that wouldnt make but a couple dollars difference in a monthly payment so its useless..

i could afford it if i could keep my same monthly payment of $393 a month but that was a no go. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif

the only blue WRX in the area, and they have to be bastards over $2,000 dollars..http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gifhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif

i finally just walked out..

his loss..

That was the best thing you could have done!, If you are willing to make the trip come down to Tampa and talk to Pete Mastro, or go to North Carolina and talk to Jerry (Deadbolt). Both are well respected dealers and carry a great reputation.

Check our dealer's web site:
www.vanbortelsubaru.com (http://www.vanbortelsubaru.com)

The price they list on the page is the price you pay. Show THAT to your dealer.

Man that sucks!!! My friend was going to get a WRX but he had no money at all and went to inquire about it anyway. He was able to talk to the owner of the dealer and talk him down to a certain number with:

spoiler
sub/amp
upgraded speakers
CF dash stuff

For, yes LOOK AT IT!!!

$ 23,350
yes just$ 23,350

Before taxes and fees and all that other crap.

So that juat goes to show you that if you find the right dealer they will work for you especially if you own a suby in the first place.

Just though I would let all of you out there know that.

The dealer I went through took off Shipping...and I didn't even ask for that...

but I did go to 2 different dealers and that one was about 800 - 1000 bucks less. Total walk out the door was about 25.5k

I'm with JGard on this one.

There's NO way you should be spending half your income on a car.

Hey John,
I was in the same boat although I picked up a Forester. I had to purchase (had to?) http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif a car since mine was totaled by someone back in December. Anyway, if purchased outright it would have cost me about 25G. plus tax and license and with that would come payments at about 450.00..I make more than that every two weeks (bit more) but, was not willing to tie up all that cash each month so I decided to lease the car then buy it with money saved up on the side just incase I needed it in the meantime. I now have payments of 299/mo. and I put about 1-200. away each month and when the lease is up in 4 years, I'll have about 8,000 plus any tax returns and bonuses from work to pay off the residual. I know that in the end I pay more, but it allowed me to have the car I wanted. Just a thought.

Dude, you're bringing in about $12k a year and you own an RS? You should probably count your blessings as they are and stop longing for something better.

If you can't afford it, you can't afford it. Period.

Hi everyone, haven't really been around for a while.

Kudos on the site though! It looks great.

Anyways, totally, if you're pulling in 12k a year, the WRX is outta your league (sorry).
And why would a dealer want to sell this car at invoice when 1, there isn't that many, and 2, the demand is great and there are lots of people that will buy at sticker or a couple of bills under. You lower the price on something when you can't sell it. Save your money (I don't know how you get by on 12k nowadays)

seriously...at my last job, I was at 28K, and had a very tough time paying for the RS. Well, I could pay for the RS fine, just nothing else. Don't bite off more than you can chew.

I got my 5 speed red wagon for $23K with alarm upgrade. That was the total price not incl. tax, doc fees, etc.I told them what I thought the car was really worth and made the offer of 23, which they took. Thank God. Seriously though, so far it's a great car, but where does Subaru get off charging approx. $5k more (in comparison to the TS wagon)for essentially the same car except the rex has a turbo and fancy suspension and slightly better interior? I suppose we're paying for the fact that it's a world rally car? Anyways, I had a nice saleswoman and they didn't jerk me around a whole lot. I made three trips to that dealer before I signed on the line.Good luck. BTW, you've got to do better on insurance. 1800/year??? Kinda high. How's your record? I managed to get mine for ~840/yr.

Luckily, mid-Michigan is NOT the subaru capital of the world. I bought my new wagon (ordered it) for $500 under invoice. If you can get to the area, go to Williams Autoworld of Lansing. Ask for Dan Barstow. He's a good guy- even if he does like VW's better. However, I can't see blaming the dealer because you can't afford the car.

Even if you think you can spend half your income, $2,000 dollars is only gonna get you about $40 a month off the payment. You'll still be way out of your range. You're wasting your time and giving yourself un-needed heartache. Sorry John.

Yikes!?! Half your income??!!?? That's a bit steep! Yeah dude, I'm gonna hafta go with the consenus on this one man, looks like you're gonna hafta wait. Hey not lecturing you or anything, it's up to you dude, but in my situation, I had to wait a long time-3 years- before I could afford mine. Like Jgard, I could have barely afforded it when I was making 28K a year, now I'm grossing $40K, and I'm at a good comfort level. I don't have much money for mods because I have to pay for my flight training. But still dude, if it's something you want real bad, sometimes you gotta wait for it, like I did. Anyway, good luck man!
Gotta fly!

I have to agree with the majority here. No need to get yourself into debt to get the WRX. You have a nice car. Be happy with it. All it takes is one missed payment and your credit history goes out the window.

I'm struggling with the idea of getting the car myself. I can afford it but I also have a mortgage payment and planning to start a family soon. Needless to say, I will eventually get one. Just have to talk my wifey into ithttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Best of luck to you.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that the actual price is not what you spend. The total cost of ownership is much higher, you will spend more money than your RS in payments, gas (you have to use 92 now and gas is going up, way up), insurance, you want to gun the car all the time (more gas). Wait a year or two, WRX is here to stay.

If you're running that tight on funds, but you really want a WRX, save your money for now - keep your RS and pay it off, and save your money - if you're dedicated enough, maybe you can afford the STI when it comes out.

But you shouldn't be spending this much on a car - something that inherently loses value over time. In my case, my payments are close to 10% of my net income - well within what I can afford.

I don't even spend half my income on my HOUSE ... you need to loosen up and enjoy what you've got. As the group has said at 12k per year you should be lucky to have the RS. I just added together both my cars plus insurance on both and I still haven't broken 10%...

didn't your parents ever teach you the value of saving your money ???

I agree with just paying on your RS and saving what you can toward a down payment on your next car. And I think you'll find even saving that will be difficult which should tell you not to go any higher on car payments to begin with! Yikes!! And premium gas??? Double Yikes!!!

Patience, grasshopper, patience.....

I was going through the same thing... I though I had to have a WRX.. and I still want one. However, my wife was driving an 11 year old Honda, while it's was a fine car, it was getting to the point where it was gonna start needing some serious maintenance. It was time for a new machine. Right on cue the WRX was announced. I went nuts, we had to have one. I told her that she could pick out the next car... as long as it was awd. Whe didn't have any problems with that since I had bought a new Impreza in 98, and she liked that car. I could have persuaded her that we were getting the WRX, however being the gentle man that I am (patting myself on the back, he he he), I kept my word and let her choose.

After some financial figuring, we decided that we could not afford the WRX. My Impreza is only 2/3 paid for, and we just could not afford to pay the little bit extra. So we got a dark blue Legacy for 20 grand instead. She liked that car better anyways. Now maybe in a couple of years when my Impreza is paid for, if I get a raise or two between now and then, I can get the STI, or the WRX. Or fix up my 98.

To tell the truth, after driving a couple of WRXs, I have just as much fun in my Impreza as I would in the Rex. My 98 with agxs, stiffer sway bars, and .75 negative camber on the front handles better than the stock Rex anyways. Sure I don't have the juice, but hey, the juice aint everything.

OK now wait a minute. Let's look at the numbers a little closer.

They're offering $15,383 for your trade.
How much do you owe on it?
Take that and subtract it from the 15383.
Now take the remainder and subtract it from the price of the WRX. No matter what you do, you're going to spend 23-25 rock bottom on a WRX off the lot. (Unless the dealer can't move one for some reason.) So if you have a couple of thousand in equity in your RS, let's say you've got 4k, then the total loan amount is going to be about $20,000.
At 0% interest your monthly payments will be
60mo=333.33
48mo=416.67
72mo=277.78
But that's no interest.
At 7%
60=396.02
48=478.92
72=340.98
But that's 7%. How's your credit? If you can't get a great rate it changes things drastically.
At 13%
60=455.06
48=536.55
72=401.48
At 19.99%
60=529.77
48=608.50
72=478.94

I don't need to tell you that 72 months at 19.99% would total $35,000. Plus the 4k in equity for your down payment. Dang. I don't know if any WRX is worth $40k.

I'd stick with the RS for a while longer.

Some info about my car:

After taxes my Scoob was $22,150.
Down payment of $8000.
Monthly payments are $591.22
Financed @ 3.9% for 2 years.
Total finance charge is $683.

If you have gold credit (like me) Subaru will give you really low finance rates. The bigger the down payment and the less time you finance your car for, the less money you will spend overall. However, some people can't afford a $600/month payment. I was thinking of 4 year financing, however, I would have paid over $2200 in finance charges!
