View Full Version : Is Nitrous Safe?
Spoolin16PSI 03-09-2004, 11:23 AM Ok, I have done the searches and now i need some real feedback. I have been contemplating running a 50 Shot of nitrous to MY03 WRX. Of course this would be wet shot, and no more than a 50 shot at any time. I am already running a C02 shot to the intercooler. Will the engine hold the N02? For how long?
1DOWNCLOWN 03-09-2004, 11:32 AM its bad...... if you use it in small amounts every once in awhile you might be ok... but i wouldnt take the chance

wickedwrx 03-09-2004, 12:34 PM if done right nitrous is perfectly safe. It is just the people the go strapping nitrous on their car with out proper supporting mods and who don't know how to use it are the ones that blow them up all the time.
redhat778 03-09-2004, 01:52 PM Nitrous is a lot like a chick w/ an STD, you want to hit it real bad, but you are affraid of the consequences
racinready300ex 03-09-2004, 01:54 PM I would say a 50 shot is no less harmfull than getting 50 more hp from a more boost. It's the same amount of stress, in theory. But if not done correctly you could have problems.
For example: is our rev-limiter a fuel or ign. cut? If it's a fuel cut and you hit that while on the bottle I could for see some problems. The same would go for the boost cut, I know that's a fuel cut.
I'd invest in gauges 1st. at leats get a egt.,and air/ fuel. You don't want to go to lean that's for sure. And do lots of research b4 you do it. Make sure you know what your doing. You'll be ok, but mistakes on spray can be costly.
StillBoostin 03-09-2004, 01:54 PM Only run a 50 shot. Don't become a nitrous junky and up the jets. I toasted my motor with a 75 shot. Burned up #4 intake valves and cracked the ring land (sp) as well. If you want to play you gotta pay. How big is your wallet. You will need valves, pistons, and rods just to start on a poor man's budget. Don't get me wroung it is a lot of fun. I did 12.255 sec at 114.67mph 75shot with bottle pressure at 600psi. Unofficially 119mph on the street. Stock motor, trans, intercooler, ecu. So it is very possible to be fast, but only for a month or two. Don't do it unless you are ready to have a lot off down time.
Good Luck,
James

Rickyh 03-09-2004, 06:45 PM gotta hit it
tolnep 03-09-2004, 07:35 PM Just a guess.. Anecdotal evidence leads me to believe that NOS is the top rated mod based cause of engine damage.
Almost any fool can buy it and try to install it. Very easy to do 'too much of a good thing'. Too easy to get instant lean conditions. Instant torque breaks trans too.
That said, the right installation by someone that has experience and is conservative gives instant gratification.
Then there is the story (used to be a picture of this on the web) of the guy who had a bottle warmer left on and the emergency pressure release valve failed while the car was parked in the garage and the resulting damage would have made osama proud. Blew out the back of the car (NOS in trunk) and the totaly blew out the back of the guys garage. Car had that characteristic peeled back metal look of an Israeli bus after a suicide bomber.
mexicanpizza 03-09-2004, 08:03 PM You mean....this car:

ryuwrx 03-10-2004, 01:35 AM mmmmmmmmmm, toasty:p
V REX 03-10-2004, 01:50 AM It only happened because the fool left the bottle warmer on. If you don't think you will remember to turn off the warmer, don't get one.
Seriously though, N20 is just like adding boost if done right. You have to make sure the car is tuned for it and you will be ok... a egt and wideband would be ideal to keep an eye on things. Of course any power adder will make your car weaker in the long run.
If you do decide to run it, get tuned for it and make sure you use C16 or at least some type of race gas. Search for AZScoobie's post's on the subject, he has posted a lot of very useful info.
bosaleh 03-10-2004, 03:26 AM 50 Shot its safe but your boost should be 15 or 16 psi not more;)
Spoolin16PSI 03-10-2004, 03:46 PM thanks for the info guys, I think i have decided to run a 30 shot in addition to the c02 intercooler shot. I figured with the 30 shot, i would play it safe and can tune it up if i really wanted to. Hopefully the shop can get me in mid- next week for the install. I will have the dyno numbers and track numbers up after that if all goes well.
