View Full Version : Problem with dealership

This happened at Subaru of Jacksonville. Bought my certified pre-owned STi from them on 1-22-04. When I was looking at the car I noticed the tires were VERY bald! The salesman assured me that if they were low enough they would have to be replaced. So I thought everything was great, wouldnt have any problems. (I've head alot of good things about this dealership). So 2 months go by and last weekend I go to change the oil. With the car in the air I notice how bad the tires are. The front left tire almost has no tread left and in fact the steel is showing...the tire is completly unsafe to drive on....so I have to have it replaced.

Also, when I got the car, didn't notice till I got home, but it had no spare tire, no jack, no owners manual, and no spare key. I was fine with this...as I knew who the previous owner was and obtained these items from them.

So I go into the dealership today to ask about this. Was very polite and spoke to my salesperson, Teddy, and his manager, Eddie. First Teddy comes out saying that the tires aren't covered, they were perfectly fine when they inspected it and they have no idea how the car was driven (I baby this car!). So then my parents, who always seem to try and get involved in stuff for me...get's on the phone with Eddie and asks him. He basically tells her the same thing they told me. She then mentions that I also had no spare or jack so if I would have had a blow out in the middle of no where I would have been stuck. The manager then tells her that she's lying, they acquired the missing parts for me and gave them to me. She told him otherwise and he hung up with her.
Now my questions is...is this normal practice for Subaru dealerships?? I'd hope not...since this bad experience has had me second guess my new Subaru purchase. The way we were treated by employee's of Subaru isn't reflecting very highly upon the company. I pretty much got the attitude of "tough luck".
What to do??

unfortuantely if you didn't get it in writing the salesman can promise anything they want...and you are outta luck. sorry...

dealers seem to be getting worse all the time.

That sucks. Sounds like you bought a used car from the used car department in a Subaru dealership? I've never heard of SOA having a 'certified pre-owned' program, so I guess it is the stealership's own program? I believe Subaru dealerships are 'independantly owned and operated', so I guess the best you can do is call SOA or the BBB and file a complaint.

Chalk it up as a learning experience. :(

Sounds pretty typical for a used-car dealer (of whatever brand).
Good lesson, though, on why things need to be in writing, and why it's the buyer's responsibility to thoroughly check out the purchase before bringing it home.

^^ sounds like a good possibility. OTOH, how many miles were on the car?

Look at it this way: if they had put new tires on it they probably would have bought cheap ones and bumped up the price. This way you can put exactly what tires you want on the car. You need to replace all 4 tires at once btw, not just the worst one.

They definitely screwed you but at least you got the jack etc so it could have been worse. Write a complaint letter to SOA and post this in the dealership review forum too (if you haven't already)
