i know about basic things to look for while shopping for a used car. my question is, are there any impreza specific problems aside from the wheel bearings?

Sometimes, the rear differential itself. But that's pretty rare. I've only ever heard of 4 going.

There was a MAF recall done on the MY99. Not sure if it applies to any of the other years.

Didn't the 98's have headgasket problems? That's what I seem to keep reading in the NA forum(none recently but none the less)..

Yes, a few of the 2.5 models had this problem. The 2.2 motors were fine and probably the best motor built by Subaru. :)
