I found a 2000 RS for sale for $16,900, which seems a little too good to be true. I am going to check it out later this week and was wondering what I should look for (tires, belts, areas prone to wear, etc). The car only has 5,000 miles on it, and I don't know if that is worth the $2,000 I would save on a new RS.

Thanks

I would think it is but be sure to spend the $$$ to have it professionally checked out. And the carfax reports are a good idea. www.carfax.com (http://www.carfax.com)

I dunno, there is always something nice about being the first owner of a new car.

Damn. That's cheap for a 2000 model. Better being a mechanic with you, that's my advice. Unless the guy is in the military and is about to ship out and needs to sell it fast, I'm VERY surprised at the price and mileage - both being considerably low.

It doesn't matter if anything is wrong with it .It will still be under warranty 3yr.or 36000 miles. So your covered.

If it's been wrecked and not repaired very well, you could see numerous problems pop up when it gets out of warranty, though. Suspension damage may cause wear on parts that might not be apparent for years, but still much sooner than they would wear out otherwise.

If you have a knowledgeable mechanic check it out, be sure they look for crash damage, and you should be ok.

There are mechanics who will either go with you or let you bring your car in for a 150 point checkup and give you a checklist at the end of the checkup. I believe it costs around $150 or so for the checkup. I once bought for my girlfriend [she paid] at the time a used car that was the current model year, and the dealer actually offered to pay for the checkup. I thought it was a hoax and the dealer would force us to go to one of their off-site mechanics, but they said go to any mechanic within 25 miles and they'd cover it. My ex ended up buying the car and the dealer did good on reimbursing us for the cost of discovery. Nothing was wrong, ended up truly being some military man who had to shovel off...

private seller or dealer? For that price with that mileage, pretty good indication that its been wrecked and repaired, bring a good mechanic with you or bring it to a subie dealer let them check it out, they may charge you but it might be worth it. also check out www.carfax.com (http://www.carfax.com) or www.edmunds.com (http://www.edmunds.com)

they can get you the history of almost anycar.
