View Full Version : Play in front HUBS: How much play is normal?

My car had not felt right for the past 2-3 days, so I decided to check my CV joints. When I did so, I noticed that the disc had a NOTICABLE amount of play in it. This held true for both fronts, and neither rears.

Is there an acceptable amount of play allowed in the front disc? I am thinking no, but I just want to ensure that I am not wasting anyone's time at the dealership by bringing this up.

Thanks in advance!

I'm a little confused, do you mean your hubs have play or your brake discs?

How did you check for play in the brake discs? Did you take the wheels off? I don't think Subarus have set screws for the rotors so there would be no tension on the rotor with the wheels off and it'll be free to move around. The rear probably felt tight because you had the parking brake on.

There should be zero play in your hubs, that you can feel anyway.

If you remove the front caliper, the front disc will usually slide right off the hub.
Put a couple lug nuts on the studs all the way down(assuming your lugs will touch the rotor hat) and see how much 'play' there is in the discs....there should be none.
If there is, you may have a bad bearing.

I appreciate the quick reply.

So, basically, I was freaking out for nothing.

Yes, I had removed the wheel, and upon doing that, I noticed that the brake DISC was floating.

Thank you for all your replies, and I am sure that the service manager at my Subaru dealership will thank you more. With the wheels on (and in the air), there was NO movement in the wheel. Everything then was good.

Thanks for your time and wisdom, gentlement.
