View Full Version : 93-01 Impreza GC8 STi Version 6 bumper & front end swap FAQ
supermoose 03-31-2004, 07:05 PM okay, so you have a 93-01 impreza. you want to look cool, so you want to have the look of the 1999-2001 2.5RS, or STi version 6 impreza.
first of all
1999 usdm 2.5RS = JDM sti version 5 (no little holes for lip spoiler-iirc but same look as V6)
2000-2001 = JDM sti version 6. has little square holes to mount OEM JDM lip spoiler with
okay. so lets start with the bumper first of all:
any GC8 (1993-2001) bumper is interchangabble with any other GC8 bumper. that is fact, if you ask why, i will not respond.
i own a 1993 impreza L, i have sti v6 complete front end on my own car. so yes. i have done this before.
you will need for converison from 1993->2001 2.5 RS bumper
Parts:
1 bumper skin from 2000-2001 2.5 RS (sedan = coupe) ~$220 @ your local parts counter
1 set of bumper turn signal lights with harness ~$35 for set of clear ones at autodynamic.com
1 set of ugly orange vent thingys (if you wish- i dont have any bc they dont do jack)
1 bumper beam; 3 options. Sti lightweight bumper beam $58 @subaruparts.com, OEM 2001 RS beam ~$110 @ parts counter and 25 lbs heavier, stock L bumper beam + grinder and saw = $0. stock L beam in unmodified form will NOT fit. sorry. foam thing will be thrown away as well, dont ask me what it is, you'll see it when you take bumper off
this having been said, all that is required is to remove the bumper beam - 4 17mm bolts, remove the random small 10mm bolts that hold the bumper skin in place, and the fixament thingys that hold the ends of the skin in place by the wheel wells. i dont remembber how it is in place OEM, i have a special way i do it myself.
reuse the metal top arch piece that sandwiches the bumper skin, and re-install the new parts jsut like you took apart the old parts. hoooray. you look cool now. the turn signals will plug right in, exact same harness ends, jsut differnt bulbb setups.
hood/ lights / grille conversion:
97-01 hood and lights and grill are all the same shape.
differances in lights:
93-96 is fuzzy lense and rounded
97/98 is fuzzy angular
99-01 is clear angular. these are hott and hard to find. i dont have any for sale.
grills:
93-96; rounded and fits the lights
97/98: angular, i believe its = STi v4 iirc
99-01; usdm market is same as 97/98 iirc
hoods.
93-96: usdm rounded steel sans hood scoop or vents
93-96: JDM STi version 1-3 one is aluminum, has thin scoop and floppy vents. $$$$ to find one. weight is about the same as STi version 4-6. (i have both- NOT for sale)
97-98: usdm steel, angular front, no scoop heavy
98-01: usdm 2.5 RS / obs steel. looks cool and has proper vents to fit STI aluminum hood, just heavy
JDM STI v4-6: aluminum lightweight hood, vents and scoop compatible with all usdm OBS/RS parts.
sti v1-3 had all rounded hood and bumper, sti v4 had angular hood and rounded bumper, sti v5-6 had angular hood and angular bumper. i thinks.
fenders: all fenders are the same. jdm had no moulding on lots, you can shave the moulding or buy a 98-01 RS fender that has no moulding factory stock.
headlights / grilles / hoods fitament:
angular grille will NOT fit with rounded headlights.
angular headlights WILL fit rounded grille
either hood will fit with either headlights.
to do conversion ala my personal green bus,
sti v6 aluminum hood ($454)
2001 RS headlights $180 (used)
1999 RS grill piece ($35 used)
2000 RS hood scoops adn vent. ($120 used)
2001 RS bumper ($220 new)
clear turn signals ($35 new)
sti bumper beam ($58 new)
$1102. + paint, labbor, whatnot.
scobaru 03-31-2004, 08:46 PM this was like my thread in the faq's but a little more details. missing out on a few things.
all 97+ moldings RS's or L's had no moldings. also 97+ mirrors are different in shape compared to pre 97's. the pre 97's are flat and ugly 97+ is yum. has more shape to it more rounded
Rebellion 04-02-2004, 10:01 PM took me 3 months to notice that my mirrors were different (replaced a door w/ one from a newer car). when painted they're not that noticeably different.
Also.. the 97 OBS hood also has scoops and vent.
scobaru 04-02-2004, 11:23 PM for me they were :p I guess I pay attention to detail tho
only thing that it is missing is part numbers :) good write up

What do you consider moldings? what are these on the side called? I'm pretty sure they are stock too.

munkis 04-03-2004, 09:21 PM omg sticky!:p
scobaru 04-04-2004, 01:56 AM oh damn I didn't finish that sentance lol. I ment to finish it off by saying the 97+'s didn't have moldings on the fender
http://photocabin.com/controller.php?id=723.jpg
my 94 L
supermoose 04-06-2004, 01:41 AM yah, rs's dindt have fender moulding, im guessing 98+ cars or 97+. dunno, sombody check.
JDM didnt have it at all from 93. ugly yucky moulding. u can do the JDM door swap or shave them :P
i hart no moulding. looks a million bux better.
scobaru 04-06-2004, 11:31 AM I'm prob going to up grade to 97+ moldings since I dont like door dings but I do like moldingless
solomrus 04-17-2004, 12:37 PM here is a shot of my v2/3 bumper with the facelift grille/lights/hood.
http://europa.unl.edu/~nsubaru/interactive/albums/album71/RA3.jpg http://europa.unl.edu/~nsubaru/interactive/albums/album71/RA2.jpg
supermoose 04-18-2004, 04:37 AM neat. what beam u use with the old skool v 1-4 bumper skin?
petregeus 04-20-2004, 02:28 PM Now THAT looks nice. The side mirrors are a nice touch too! Did you use the RS beam or the lightweight?
solomrus 04-20-2004, 02:38 PM i won't know until i can find time to pull it apart and re-hang everything.
i didn't build the car. i suspect, from the way the front end pieces are lined up, that it is a hacked stocker.
the grille is painted wrong, a tab or two on the headlights are cracked, and a bunch of other little crap. just time.
i definitely like the look, it was what i wanted to build. rs hood, rs fenders, probably grille too. i wouldn't have chosen those mirrors from a functionality standpoint, as they are basically useless.
but they look great. 8^)

Kyguy 05-02-2004, 09:05 AM I love my bumper, but I wish I had larger foglights :o

Kostamojen 05-07-2004, 07:40 PM How much have people paid to get their hoods painted?
Streetman 05-10-2004, 06:49 AM First, great write up.
However, you refered to the "L" model. DOn't forget about us poor Brighton folks. I assume they're the same bumper beams, eh?
Now, what are you talking about with cutting the stock beam to make it work? Obviously, you didn't do that. Do you know how though? Also, that sounds like trouble. THe beam is there for a reason. Cutting it would weaken it, no? Any idea on the strength of the STi vs stock beam? I'm thinking I'll take the extra 25 pounds, and pay the extra $$, and know in a head on collision, I'm not going to have a car in my lap. You think?
Please comment/speculate/argue.
sideways slut 05-10-2004, 02:03 PM im going to have to say that the front end on your brighton would be stonger then the stock us bumper beam, the lighter bumper beam would be even weaker then the two as they even say that they are for off road use only... my reason behind this is that i live in canada and our ****ty safety regulation caused us not to be able to get the RS with sti front bumper, instead we have the L:rolleyes:
scobaru 05-11-2004, 12:47 AM my car isn't even a L its a base model same bumper tho as the L's and brightons. Sti bumper beams are weaker some aruge on the damage that would be done with an Sti bumper beam and how worth it is to have it
well i figured that i might as well add the part numbers that i have

Siper2 05-20-2004, 01:06 AM Just FYI, if you ask him nicely, North Ursalia at Exeter Subaru in NH can probably fill in those missing part numbers for you. I think he memorizes that stuff. :D

A few of them may be on his personal website, I know he has a lot of part numbers listed:

supermoose 05-25-2004, 02:28 AM blarf. sti bumper beam is off road parts. so if u smash, you probbly = toast. ir have it and dont really care. i liek the lightweightness. ive got bumped at 5mph and it hasnt done any damage (ex to paint on bumper)
if u are paranoid u need to buy USDM 2.5RS 99-01 bumper beam.

IronMonkeyL255 05-30-2004, 02:10 AM Just out of curiosity, how much modification would be required to fit this stuff on a '91-'94 Legacy?
The main part I want is the RS bumper. I sorta like my slanty evil eyes headlights and hood, but that bumper has teh hawtness.
Would it require any sort of modification to the proper beam (donor RS) or to the bumper cover?

Where can I buy a set of those Bumper turn signal ights? Any ideas where to purchase a pair? Hopefully it will fit the C-west front bumper. Any leads are appreciated. Thanks
IronMonkeyL255 06-06-2004, 05:33 PM You mean the little orange vent lights (?)?
You should be able to get them through your dealer.

Will98RS 07-01-2004, 06:14 PM i have a 98rs. if i want the 99+ style bumper do i need to swap bumper beams too?
Will98RS 07-02-2004, 04:36 PM no one will look at me because i am a sticky
scobaru 07-02-2004, 04:41 PM yes u do the bumper beam the 98RS have are the same as 99L's
kingsubi 07-29-2004, 03:38 PM Just installed the version 3 or 4 rounded bumper from having the L bumper.
I could never find this info so I will post it here
Most of the rebar needs to hacked - the bottom portion mainly leaving the bars that attach it to the frame.
Started like this:
http://i14.tinypic.com/2dtzxb7.jpg
http://i7.tinypic.com/2zhmmau.jpg
And was cut to this (note I did this with mainly a hack-saw & be sure to throw some rust-proof paint on there as you have exposed a lot of untreated steel):
http://i11.tinypic.com/40p7jnk.jpg
Thirdly I noticed when I went to put on this bumper that a portion of the bumper needed to be trimmed. I am not sure what it was for but it was in the way of the main portion of the rebar - hard to see in the pic but basically just cut it off. It may have been a bracket for the fogs but I am not sure as I am using Hella fogs. It is the small tab near the bottom of the circle that has a hole in it.
http://i11.tinypic.com/2h4ba4i.jpg
And finally the finished product:

Any questions be sure to ask
SubaruImpreza_power 08-12-2004, 03:40 AM So how much does it cost to have a hood painted..
SubaruImpreza_power 08-12-2004, 04:14 AM How does Subaruparts.com do the listing?
I don't understand..
$137.12 Bumper face-front painted for usage Fits: S+W+2C
$163.07 Bumper face-front painted for usage Fits: S.RS+2C.RS
So which one would I get for my 95 impreza L?
Jaredm83 08-13-2004, 02:02 PM the more expensive one. But for shippiung cost yopu might as well get it from your closest dealer...
SubaruImpreza_power 08-13-2004, 02:06 PM I think it was only like $84 for the next day air so thats not as bad as I thought it was.. but I would check again to make sure I had the right price down heh.
edubaru 09-13-2004, 12:08 AM please if someone could help me
I have this 93 impreza and I had an accidentso I got to replace my headlights I was thinking of changin the original ones for a newer model or those twin beam but I'm not sure if they fit
raydadick 09-13-2004, 10:37 PM well this thread will help greatly since i will be doing the swap from a 98 to a 99 front end soon. prob not but anyone want to buy my 98 front end? all lights, beam and whatnot i dont use?
clyde 10-04-2004, 08:57 PM How does Subaruparts.com do the listing?
I don't understand..
$137.12 Bumper face-front painted for usage Fits: S+W+2C
$163.07 Bumper face-front painted for usage Fits: S.RS+2C.RS
Based on some other things I've looked at there, my interpretation is that "S+W" stands for "sedan and wagon", and that "2C" is for "2-door coupe". That's just a guess, though, and you could probably get a firm answer by phone (877- 473-6200).
oldschool_L 01-03-2005, 02:46 AM Ive got a 93 L and need a new hood, I dont want to dish out for the full swap but I want the 2.5 hood, Ive heard it fits the 93 but doesnt line up right, anyone know how it looks or if it will even fit?
scobaru 01-03-2005, 03:07 AM it fits. there will be some gap though by the headlights were it meets the near the grill. Caddy DAddy's old 2 door red brighton had the RS hood on the older body and headlights if u can find his old car some other people too.
oldschool_L 01-03-2005, 02:32 PM Thanks for the help man, preciate it
boostedimprezagirl 01-05-2005, 02:11 PM Hey....whats up. I own a 97 Subaru Impreza L. I rebuilt the almost the whole car. Re-painted it from the stock green to a pearl blue with metalflake, new interior swap, engine swap from a 1.8 L to a 2.2 Legacy Turbo, OZ Supralegra Rims, 2.5 RS wing and hood, system, underglows, new aspec exhaust, and so much other little odds and ends. And I havethe jdm front bumper for my car and it looks so sweet. Do you think you can email me a picture of your car to see your front end swap? I'd love to see it if you have pictures. Email me at boostedimpreza@yahoo.com. Thanks....Andrea
kingsubi 01-12-2005, 11:32 PM Which bumper do you have??
JDM_Scobaru 02-01-2005, 08:44 PM wow the old school front bumper is only like $140 i thought it would be a lot more.
JDM_Scobaru 02-01-2005, 08:47 PM Ive got a 93 L and need a new hood, I dont want to dish out for the full swap but I want the 2.5 hood, Ive heard it fits the 93 but doesnt line up right, anyone know how it looks or if it will even fit?
version 1-3 hood looks awesome and it fits perfectley. The rs hoods dont line up perfectley, but they look good too. Not to mention the old school hoods are more friendly to the intercooler than the RS hoods
WRXCSTI 03-07-2005, 02:20 PM This is a great thread! I’m also trying to upgrade my ’96 LX to the RS front look. Thanks.
kingsubi 04-06-2005, 02:24 PM Going old school? You need the lights and grill with the hood (if you upgrade to the crystal clear headlights you will need the newer hood & grill)
New old hood ;)
http://www.uoguelph.ca/~kingj/hood4.jpg
aross 04-22-2005, 09:53 PM Noice Hood King James...
geeman 05-15-2005, 02:54 PM looks sweet
SubaruImpreza_power 05-22-2005, 04:10 AM my bumper cracked in a run in with a sign.. So now i'm looking for a bumper face of a 2.5RS I thought I was able to mount the new face by just cutting the bumper beam?
And How much should I be paying from a Dealer for this?
a Version 5 Bumper.
WRXCSTI 06-03-2005, 03:07 PM I bought a set of MY01 RS fog light switch/relay/harness for my conversion since I plan to install the 01 big round fog lights. I have 3 questions:
1. Would MY01 RS fog light switch/relay/harness work or should I order MY96 LX switch/relay/harness?
Edit - just found out the relay is the same for 96/01 so the switch/relay should be ok.
2. Where does the relay go? I think it goes under the dash on the left side but need more details.
3. The MY01 harness (about 3.5 ft) seems short. Am I missing any parts?
Edit - MY01 has pre-wired harness so the distance from the fog lights to the mid point connection is short (3.5 ft). For Impreza w/o pre-wired harness, the MY01 harness is too short.
I'd appreciated if anyone can post some instructions on how to install switch/relay/harness. Thanks.
SubaruImpreza_power 06-03-2005, 04:41 PM Oh Jebus... lol I forgot all about the fog light switch...
let me know if it's a PITA to wire up, really..
As i'm going to be getting the Bumper for my Impreza next week.
nix-hex 06-11-2005, 09:20 PM i didnt feel like reading 3 pages of relplies just to make sure im not repeating any questions asked earlier cus im kinda in a hurry.
my 99 rs is going through the cosmetic stages of version 5 conversion and i found the wing and tailights and badges and what not.
now where can i find a real jdm wing and not some fiberglass knock off replica and also the real jdm rear bumper?
gtx&wrx 06-28-2005, 04:51 PM Hey all, I am looking for some info, I cant seem to find that lightweight bumper beam anywhere on the website, i have bought a version 5 bumper and will need some mods to fit it to my 1994 impreza with a wrx swap.
I will try and include a photo
kingsubi 06-29-2005, 01:29 PM 57760fa400
nix-hex 10-10-2005, 11:45 PM actually, fiberglass wing will be fine. i found that and the rear bumper lip but i dont want the look of the jdm rear bumper on the american bumper. anyone know where i can get a true jdm rear bumper for the 98-01 RS and anyone know why did they make the RS with the jdm front bumper, lip, side skirts, WRX spoiler but not the real jdm rear bumper with lip attached?
quentinberg007 10-11-2005, 12:45 AM actually, fiberglass wing will be fine. i found that and the rear bumper lip but i dont want the look of the jdm rear bumper on the american bumper. anyone know where i can get a true jdm rear bumper for the 98-01 RS and anyone know why did they make the RS with the jdm front bumper, lip, side skirts, WRX spoiler but not the real jdm rear bumper with lip attached?
Try gr8wheels.com possibly? They tend to have a lot of wrecked GC8s come in. I've tried to contact them about a JDM rear bumper in the past but to no avail.

supermoose 10-11-2005, 03:22 AM i have a JDM rear bumper, but its on my car :P
Alamein300Z 10-20-2005, 12:09 AM intresting swap
my3awds 12-20-2005, 03:23 AM I just wanted to add a little bit of my progress on my 93 -> 2001 v6 ej20t. This is just a test fit, so you'll see some gaps.
Man that front bumper guard took a LONG time to cut in half...and I used a sawzall and grinder! Thought I'd add that if you get the V6 bumper and center grill, you cannot use a V3-4 or usdm 93-96 hood, as the end of the hood doesn't close with the thicker center grill. Can't wait to get my fogs and hood in the mail!

swapstar 12-28-2005, 07:49 AM correction- the rounded hood is a JDM version 1-2. version 3/4/5/6 have all the same hood. version 1/2/3/4 have the same bumper.
soo.. a v12 car has round hood round bumper
v34 has angle hood round bumper
v56 has angle hood angle bumper.
scobaru 12-28-2005, 05:50 PM information above is correct. if you want to use JDM rounded bumper cover or the angled one as swapstar calls it and your using the impreza L front bumper beam... you'll need to hack off the bottem part of the bumper bar for eather bumper cover.
nix-hex 01-06-2006, 03:09 AM so besides what quetin said, does anyone else know of the jdm rear bumper? like is that one on get-primitive.com the tru jdm bumper with the one smooth groove and not the usdm one with the two grooves? come on people, its the last piece of the rear end conversion puzzle here!
swapstar 01-06-2006, 07:47 AM what do you mean know of it. i have it on my car.
you have to hack the rear bumper beam as well, or order the sti off road one.
rare and such. id pass on a knock off and get the real thing.
nix-hex 01-06-2006, 09:01 PM hmm all that just for a bumper? you would think it would just bolt right up in the stock mounts, maybe ill pass on that, anyways, its just a boady piece, doesnt add horsepower. just like those kids who love their big fancy drift wings on front wheel drive cars and are covered in stickers.....
swapstar 01-06-2006, 09:48 PM thats what i was guessing, but when i fit it up...... you know the rest of the story....
scobaru 01-07-2006, 03:58 AM theres a write up on bumper beam modifycation for the rear bumper... IIRC it isn't much
wrx_evo_jetta 01-10-2006, 09:46 AM very nice info!! definately subscribing :)
WRXedUSA 01-10-2006, 06:45 PM So, according to the original post, the headlights are interchangable through all years, right? Given you have the correct grille piece.
scobaru 01-10-2006, 07:45 PM only the older body stytle headlights are interchangeable soo 93-01 no bug eyes on older body style with out some serious modifcations....
Subaruski 01-19-2006, 03:11 PM if i am changing over from a 98RS bumper to a 99-01RS bumper will all of the hardwear to bolt it on match up?
impreza97 01-21-2006, 09:34 PM hey i was just wondering where i can get a v6 front bumper skin for 220 bucks?
swapstar 01-21-2006, 09:46 PM do you know how to read? its listed in the original post. finish reading that line
impreza97 01-22-2006, 05:44 PM i dont have a local parts counter around me, so i was wondering if there was any sites online that sell them.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/Subaruski/106467359749_3300_1.jpg
Anyone have pics of what exactly i am going to have to cut off of the bumper beam?
Subaruski 01-28-2006, 05:52 PM can anyone tell me what i need to cut here?
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/Subaruski/106476089733_3300_1.jpg
my3awds 01-29-2006, 12:41 PM http://www.sacramento-dsm.com/cut.jpg
Subaruski 01-29-2006, 02:27 PM thanks i got it last night. took me a couple hours of cutting though. pain in the butt.
Subaruski 02-04-2006, 03:08 PM i dont have all of the parts in front of me but do the bumper turn signals from the 98 wire up to the 99-01s??? Or do i need to modify the harness?
raydadick 02-04-2006, 04:01 PM when i did mine all the bulbs were the same or the plugs were the same.
bl_easy 02-04-2006, 05:10 PM when i did mine all the bulbs were the same or the plugs were the same.
Yea, but you need to have a 99-01RS signal housing, right?
raydadick 02-04-2006, 05:42 PM yes, the lights themselves are different but everything wire wise should be the same
Subaruski 02-04-2006, 07:17 PM so i just got the 99-01 lights in the mail at my parents house. my dad said there are no wires coming out the back. Its stlyed like the corner lights where you have to insert a bulb and twist it into place. Now the 98 signals have a wire coming out the back of them and they plug into a line. I'll try and get pics to explain.
Subaruski 02-05-2006, 03:07 PM info please?
Subaruski 02-07-2006, 07:42 PM So i have the 99-01 housings but what do i do for a the bulbs? If you look at the pictures. I need the whole assembly that connects to the 99-01 housing. I called subaru and they dont sell just the wiring. What to do? Is there some universal thing i should buy?

raydadick 02-07-2006, 08:12 PM mine must have come with the bulbs and connectors cause they just plugged in. they are regular 1156 bulbs and the insert and turn housing.
raydadick 02-07-2006, 08:15 PM im not entirely sure but check your local parts store's help and bulb section. i think th autozone and advance auto have something that will work. i know they have something, dont know if it will work for sure. take the light housing w you and if they are cool they might let you open it to find out
masky43 02-17-2006, 03:24 PM dont think im retarded for asking this but, is there a difference between a 00 RS front bumper and the v5-6 sti front bumper?
Subaruski 02-17-2006, 05:27 PM i think the usdm 1999 ones didnt have the holes in the bottom to mount the sti lip skirt. The 00-01 are exactly the same as STi Ver 6
swapstar 02-18-2006, 02:02 AM drilling holes is your friend :)
i believe that the primary bumper extends lower (black non body color portion)
bl_easy 07-15-2006, 05:45 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/raiku706/Image015-1.jpg
It is very easy, however some clips can be stubborn, and you will break the clips that hold the corners of the bumper to the fender. ;)

alexey2001 08-09-2006, 01:54 AM Does anyone know what to do?
I got an aftermarket bumper for my impreza 93 (good looking one, it looks a lot like RS bumper) but neither stock turn signals nor RS turn signals fit.
does anyone know what will fit? are there more then 2 types of turn signals for impreza 93-01?
Thank you
AaronB 08-09-2006, 12:12 PM I think C-West had a bumper for the GC bodies that had differently sized turn signals, maybe your bumper is like those? Post up a picture and people might be able to help.

alexey2001 08-11-2006, 05:17 PM I was browing the web and I think I found what I need,
this is the Model number for the turn signals that should fit CGC01B-CWL.
the problem is that they cost over $100 - damn it, pricy.

Modifying a L bumper beam to fit on a V4 bumper skin is NOT I repeat NOT an easy task!!!
Unless you have a plasma cutter, or one of those giant power cutting wheels, these bitches are a pain in the ass to modify properly!
Yes, I just spent what, 3 or 4 hours cutting and hammering to get that sucker appart...
OMG I should have bought a JDM bumper beam instead, and so should you if you are planning on doing this.
I should take a photo of my hands too, all chewed up like I was in a fight...
At least everything else on this install is going relativly easy...

I suck at stuff like this and all it took me was a dremel and a sawza and about 2 hours. It does suck because its tedious.
sheepdog 09-17-2006, 03:23 PM My 93-01 conversion went easy as pie. I got the full kit from Primitive racing (www.get-primitive.com), and it came with the jdm bumper beam.
97 Pimpreza 09-20-2006, 11:55 PM Will an 04 sti front bumper fit on my 97 L? i am buying an 04 WRX STI from a junkyard for $700. the rear end is totalled but the interior front end, engine tranny and all thet stuff is fine. which means I will have the bumper beam. considering all this will it be a bolt in affair?
Local_Skater 09-24-2006, 08:12 PM $700?!!!! Are you sure you arn't missing a 0?

ZERO body panels are compatible between an 02+ Impreza and a 93-01 Impreza...
And ya, wtf with the $700 STI!?
97 Pimpreza 09-27-2006, 08:07 PM no......its $700. it got rear ended by a dump truck.
Subaruski 09-27-2006, 09:10 PM no......its $700. it got rear ended by a dump truck.
Damn i wish i could find a deal like that. So are you swaping out the whole drive train or is the rear diff and all that damaged?
97 Pimpreza 09-28-2006, 09:40 PM ummmmm....I don't know i think i might just swap my tranny to a manual (my 97 and the 04 sti are both automatics) Im prolly gonna sell the engine which has only 50k and turbo my 2.2 and do all the normal power building crap.

FYI, any USDM STi 04-07 is a 6-speed manual transmission only...
If it is an automatic it is likey a WRX or RS model rather than STi.
97 Pimpreza 10-02-2006, 11:42 PM well i know its an automatic and i think the tranny i have now is dying. how would it swap over (just the tranny)? would it be easy?
sheepdog 10-03-2006, 03:54 PM if it's an auto its not an STi
97 Pimpreza 10-03-2006, 09:18 PM ok maybe its not an sti. but it is an 04 wrx thats an automatic. would it be hard to put the tranny from it in my 97 impreza L.
Kostamojen 10-03-2006, 11:03 PM Just the tranny?
97 Pimpreza 10-04-2006, 08:44 AM yah. cuz the tranny i have now is about to die. tromping on the gas and going 110 in an automatic with 120,000 miles on it isnt to good on it. the rest of the drivetrain is fine. can i swap over just the tranny or do i have to swap over other stuff too?
atech_rallyrs 11-01-2006, 10:55 AM Back on topic! I just did this swap yesterday. It took 4 hours of dismantling, and went back together with no problems. I do have slightly more gap than I wanted between the headlights and bumper, but otherwise completely perfect fit. This was done on a 97 OBS. Please note that the lightweight JDM beam is NOT SAFE in a collision. That thing is so flimsy and not-durable its scary. Also, the under-guards that protect the engine bay dont fit between the obs and the rs bumper; these had to be ziptied together to prevent them from bouncing around. Also, the lightweight beam lacks the extra holes for pushpins to keep the bottom from moving; you will have to bolt and ziptie it directly to the beam/frame wherever you can on the edges. I did find two spots directly under the bumperbeam that I could bind the bottom to. Also, the single biggest pain in my ass was putting on the foglamps. The foglamps alone took like an hour because of the very small area I had to work with getting the bolts in there to screw down to the plates. Well worth the 450$ we spent on the whole thing, the woman is super happy about her new rs-lookalike obs wagon. :) Next up! rhd conversion and engine drop!

All that and you found the foglamps tp be the difficult part?
I thought that was easy. Hardest part for me was getting the damn bumper off... those scrivets that hold the skin to the fender were not fun.
Why'd you go with the LW beam? I'd go junkyard hunting for a stock RS beam. The cash savings isn't worth the reduction in safety... I had a front end collision and am so glad I didn't get the LW beam.
Mechkiller31st 01-30-2007, 09:56 AM Im going to be doing this conversion in just a few weeks. but I need to buy the front bumper beam. I have a 1998 L and am going with the Version V frontend found on Get-Primitive.com I am wondering do I get the LW Front Bumper Beam for the 93-98 or the LW Front Bumper Beam 99-01? I know that my bumper beam that i have on is too big for the new front bumper. Can anyone quickly answer that for me.
it would be cheeper to buy the factory part they are only ~150 from your dealer and you don't have to pay shipping from oregon
option A get 99-01 beam its heavy
option B get the sawsall out and cut off ~half of you L bumper
option C (bad idea) get lightweight also form local dealer)
option b is my recomendation C provides no support at all
AaronB 01-30-2007, 10:53 AM Another vote for the factory bumper cover, as I can't imagine a fiberglass bumper cover being as durable as stock.

So the version V is only just a 1999 RS's Front Cover? What about eh rear bumper and side skirts?
Also the 99-01 Beam will bolt right on?
GripGC8 01-30-2007, 01:27 PM the version 5/6 front bumper is almost the same as a usdm 99-01 front bumper..you cant use the usdm bumper beam with the jdm v5/6 bumper
side skirts are the same
rear bumper is a little diffrent in japan...the usdm v5/6 rear bumper has a molded in molding around it..the jdm version does not.
if i remember correctley...you need to use the jdm bumper beam for the jdm rear bumper, but can use the jdm bumper beam for either jdm or usdm bumper's.
in my opinion...i would get usdm 99-01 front and rear bumpers(most of the time they come with the bumper beams)..you could either cut off about 50 pounds from the front and rear bumper beams or just mount them as the factory would.
im going with the weight reductuion method and cutting off all the extra weight i can from my bumper beams
Mechkiller31st 01-31-2007, 10:10 AM Ok since I am going to be going from an L front end to a Version V (99-01 2.5RS) Front end. What about the wheel Well Covers. Do those need to be replaced also.

akstud1983 11-09-2007, 06:39 PM I have a 93 Wagon, whats the best way to track down the whole conversion set. i live in alaska so the selection here is limited. thanks guys!
bmxpunk 11-23-2007, 08:34 PM Ok I read the whole thing here and I just got finished with the bumper conversion. I have a brighton and I want to add the 01 RS fog lights. I know there is a harness that you can buy to put fogs in the 95.... is it the same connection as the 00-01 RS foglights? If not how do I go about adding some fogs?
scobaru 11-23-2007, 11:46 PM if u already have fogs then u should be able to use the same connections. if they are different u can swap em
bmxpunk 11-24-2007, 04:05 AM No fog lights currently. I have a 95 brighton. I know subaru has a kit for installing the lights.... but is it the same connector as the Rs FOgs, or am I going to be better off with a Hella Kit from rallylights, com?
hoskos 12-02-2007, 01:30 AM i'm sorry, but does anyone have pictures? i just bought a subaru ver 4 so i'm pretty lost as to what's what.
any help would be appreciated.

For those of you who have the v5 replica conversion from Get-Primitive, how is the fitment? The price is great, but if there is substantial gapping I'd rather pay more for OE parts.

I asked Paul Ecklund from Primitive about this in January. He said the kit he sells in now is an OEM Urethane bumper cover. You will get a killer deal from him if you buy multiple pieces (i.e. bumper cover, light-weight beam, clear corners, fog covers, etc.). He is super cool and very helpful. Just shoot him an email with any questions. Expect a quick response.
Joelo_00 03-21-2008, 01:49 PM OK so you cant use a JDM rear bumper skin with a USDM 00 bumper beam?
kwan_1104 03-21-2008, 02:33 PM you can hack the usdm beam to make it fit.

ScoobKing 08-05-2008, 10:47 AM I am currently trying to figure out where this harness, that connects the fogs together, goes to. Is there another part of it that I have to get? Also, does anyone have the part number for the relay?
btw my car is a 93 Impreza L(wagon if it matters)
scobaru 08-05-2008, 12:54 PM if your car doesn't originally have fog lamps you'll need all the wiring for fog lamps to get them to work.

I bought this kit. the front bumper is not fiberglass. I'm 100% sure it's an oem part. Paul is super cool to deal with. Let him know what you want and he'll hook you up. If you look under vendor reviews Get-primitive has only has positive comments.

I bought the front kit from them with the fog lights.
Paid over $1K with shipping.
The kit was not complete and the bumper cover was received damaged.
The wiring harness was missing connectors to the foglights.
Not quiet plug and play.
Had to have a friend make an aftermarket wiring kit work with it.
Honestly I think sourcing the parts individually from subarugenuineparts.com would be your best bet. Email them and Jamie can help you out. She is awesome.
